Ok, so here it goes.

I'm just wondering how tricky it would be, or whether it might cause any problems, to have reactions on the posts? I really like the idea of being able to express my opinion with a simple emoji, without having to write a new post about it.

I've put an arrow on the right side, suggesting where the emojis could go. Forgive my poor drawing please, but normally it's even worse.

Example:

I liked this post below from LoyceV:

Apparently, I don't think I should merit it, but I find it funny and I'd like to tell my friend Loyce that I laughed reading it.

Some thoughts:

- I don't think my proposal will make the forum into a social network like the others.
- I don't think it will stop spammers from replying just to get paid or to become annoying on purpose.
- I do believe it will be beneficial for some of us who read and want to quickly show our thoughts.

I think, most likely, that my suggestion will be discouraged, so if anything, just let me say: "LoyceV I found your post funny!"

It’s a good idea and feature IMO, but they’re certainly lot of problems with it…like, where will the reaction be displayed? When many people send different reactions to a particular post, wouldn’t that make it look very messy? And lots more of  ‘em. I know you know that..

I think there was some post earlier on about something similar to this even though it is in a different context, the other post involves using merits to express the reactions…I’d link to the post when I find it.

So in conclusion, even though it would be `beneficial’ or important to prevent some sort of unnecessary replies, I don’t see it feasible enough for this forum.

P.S: you can just merit it in that kinda scenario or rather make a reply…that’s what the majority does! I understand you’re trying to be innovative but… Roll Eyes

I have seen other forums trying to add reactions on posts and it never worked good enough.
And just look what happened with youtube, they had to hide dislikes because they didn't want to see people disliking a lot some videos.
I guess we could implement some kind of reactions with third party script or extensions, and I think it would be a waste of time adding this on base forum level.
We kind a give reactions with sending merits currently, and I know this is not always the correct way of liking something.

Yeah it would be interesting to have a feature like that but first let's consider how many features of similar kinds have been suggested that were eventually being added? Literally Theymos ignores most of them and only focuses on security related issues or other technical issues too.

So for now you can just express yourself as a reply or leave some merit replies can take less than a minute to to make depending on how brief you intend to make your gesture.

I understand the convinence behind your idea. Those quick reactions are very useful in social media. Just like you, I prefer using emojis to typing in social media. Such reactions prevent short replies like "lol", "omg" etc. But here in the forum, the merit works, although partially because it is only the merit sources that would have smerits to spend on a post that barely requires a laugh emoji.

But I think the big picture is this, the forum is for discussion, discussion about bitcoin and other new ideas. Having a quick reaction button could just shift the forum culture to engagement metrics like the social media. Who knows, it could affect the merit system. People could tend to be making funny post to rake all the laugh reactions thereby shifting the attention to popularity contest. If LoyceV has more merits, my posts should have more likes lol.

Merit is also like a reaction No? Though I understand it's limited in its application
Especially responding to a post with emojis hitting a reaction would be easier
So how would the users that reacted show up?

Does that mean dislike button could show individual reactions towards certain post (again not flawless)
But an extension would do.

I've seen some forums have reactions on posts, but from what I noticed it's used on quite rare ocassions, something similar like merit here. So, not really sure that's soemthing that we need. I'm not against your proposal, but most likely I wouldn't use it if reactions will be added one day.

Merit is also like a reaction No? Though I understand it's limited in its application
Yes, but as you say, it's very limited thing. Usually merit is rewarded for quality, interesting posts, while reaction would let you to express negative opinion about, laugh or something else.

It's similar to the "like" button that was proposed several times in the past, even before the merit system(1,2). Then we'd have two "reaction" systems running simultaneously.
I think merit points represent all the reactions a user wants to give, with varying intents, and that's great because their spending rights are limited by the merit:smerit ratio.

Indeed.  This would obviously be used to bully people.  I think the forum should focus on ways to add positivity to these boards.  Right now it seems like the default trust network is focused on negatively rating as many people as they can to elevate themselves in the community.  I miss the days when people actually built things or provided services or made innovative products to show their value...  Now it seems instead of looking up to the individuals that provide value to Bitcoin, an atmosphere has been created where people look up to those who tear down everyone else as that is the way to elevate your status in the trust network.  It's actually shameful and a top-down problem that I haven't seen any effort to change.  We should be looking for ways to elevate people in this community, not bully them.  Especially when you look at how far the ideology has fallen from when this site was awesome (almost all Libertarians) to where it is now (DT run by liberals).  Will it ever change, or is this site destined to be nothing but scammers and those in ivory towers patting each other on the back?

I'm 99.9999% certain this will never be a forum feature. However, you could use ShadowPulse? Seems to be more or less what you want: Click +Pulse on any post you like.
I mean, it is no emojis, but it is something?

Just to be clear, this is not an endorsement. Use at your own risk.

I really like the idea of being able to express my opinion with a simple emoji, without having to write a new post about it.
I use (and perceive in other's posts) merit as an emoji.

Apparently, I don't think I should merit it, but I find it funny and I'd like to tell my friend Loyce that I laughed reading it.
Give him a like using the merit.

- I don't think my proposal will make the forum into a social network like the others.
But it will turn into a New Year's tree with a garland of emotions on posts. Smiley

- I don't think it will stop spammers from replying just to get paid or to become annoying on purpose.
But it will attract trolls and others who will click on the emotion icons in posts.

- I do believe it will be beneficial for some of us who read and want to quickly show our thoughts.
But it will be useless (or harmful) for most.

And just look what happened with youtube, they had to hide dislikes because they didn't want to see people disliking a lot some videos.
If you intend to add likes here, you will also have to add dislikes, and this will only create negativity (for example, from the same trolls).

There are userscripts for iconizers and emotion icons but it will be available at standard position, not like your proposal to add a new one besides the Quote button.

Thank you all for the responses.
My idea is aborted, I respect that and I expected that.

I don't give a shit about reactions really, but you can't deny that the merit system is flawed.
Look at the amount of low-quality users who have merits.
I don't need to respond to objects like Satofan44 who apparently deserved a merit from DireWolfM14 for calling me gay (which is fine by the way).

I don't even have the will to keep writting in my own thread...  Tongue

- I don't think my proposal will make the forum into a social network like the others.
~
I think, most likely, that my suggestion will be discouraged, so if anything, just let me say: "LoyceV I found your post funny!"
Allow me to discourage this Tongue It will basically be a "like" emoji, and "likes" are designed to be addictive:
Quote from: AddictionCenter
This is observable in social media usage; when an individual gets a notification, such as a like or mention, the brain receives a rush of dopamine and sends it along reward pathways, causing the individual to feel pleasure. Social media provides an endless amount of immediate rewards in the form of attention from others for relatively minimal effort. The brain rewires itself through this positive reinforcement, making people desire likes, retweets, and emoticon reactions.

Give him a like using the merit.
Even though Merit isn't supposed to be a "Like", I think of it as "this post is worth reading", so I think occasionally Meriting funny posts is okay.

I don't give a shit about reactions really, but you can't deny that the merit system is flawed.
The Merit system worked very well to stop spammers from ranking up countless accounts. This was a real problem long before you joined Bitcointalk. But more recently, I see more and more shitposters that ranked up:
Quote
Look at the amount of low-quality users who have merits.
Many of them come from the same local board. That makes me think there is now too much Merit going around on that local board, and after ranking up they "spill over" to other boards. Just this morning, I left a neutral "Shitposter" tag on this Sr. Member. It's one of many that behave the same way.
I used to barely have anyone who posts in Meta on Ignore, now I often see multiple shitposters in a row. I prefer to bring back the glowing Ignore button!

Quote

This guy is a rare case. He's the only knowledgeable user on my Ignore list because he wasted his talent trolling drama.

Thank you all for the responses.
My idea is aborted, I respect that and I expected that.

I'm sorry if you feel that way.
As far as I can see, you registered on this forum 3 years ago and in a very short time you became a respected member of the forum community, and a member who made a very high-quality contribution to this forum, which was recognized by other members and gave you a lot of merits.
I think it's normal for conflicts to sometimes occur in large online communities like this forum and I would be sorry if you gave up and left this forum because of that.
Your suggestions are good and if there is currently no support for them it doesn't mean that they won't be accepted later or that the admins won't suggest some other improvement to this forum.
This forum is specific because of the possibility of monetizing accounts through signature campaigns and because of that we see more spam and attempts at manipulation, but on the other hand I believe that you also see the positive sides of this forum and that you will stay with us.
Your idea of adding reactions seems interesting to me and I believe that something similar could be implemented in the future on this forum, but of course it depends on the admin's decision.

I respect your desire to make changes you think would be beneficial, and I appreciate your attempt. Not all of our endeavors are successful, and that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

I'd like your post, but unfortunately, that's not possible. Wink

Considering that we are active users of the forum, then, undoubtedly, responsibility for this lies with us (on you too). Smiley

I don't give a shit about reactions really, but you can't deny that the merit system is flawed.
The merit system was created for purposes other than liking. Users simply adapted it to their needs (the analogy with bitcoin comes to mind, created as electronic money but used for speculative trading and investment purposes).

Look at the amount of low-quality users who have merits.
I don't need to respond to objects like Satofan44 who apparently deserved a merit from DireWolfM14 for calling me gay (which is fine by the way).
Is it okay for you to be gay? Smiley I didn't quite understand the essence of what you wrote. Sorry, I couldn't resist asking this off-topic question. Smiley

If you had left a signature, the strength would certainly have been found. Smiley

Yeah it would be interesting to have a feature like that but first let's consider how many features of similar kinds have been suggested that were eventually being added? Literally Theymos ignores most of them and only focuses on security related issues or other technical issues too.

...
Every features suggested is not implemented because if it has to be that way then the forum may end at implementing every single suggested feature just because some persons think it's interesting to use. I think that's why Theymos doesn't give concentration on them as much as he does with technical suggestions because at this time the forum needs technical features that would improve the forum experience than other features suggestions.

I'm very anti reactions, because I hate modern social media and the chasing for validation. However, I will concede that adding reactions would likely reduce the amount of merit being spent in these types of circumstances:
Apparently, I don't think I should merit it, but I find it funny and I'd like to tell my friend Loyce that I laughed reading it.

So, merit kind of being 'misused' or not spent with its original intended purpose i.e to reward users for substantial contributions to the forum.

So, while I will be my ignorant self and say "No way, I hate social media gamification" I will concede it could be beneficial in a roundabout way.

In terms of reactions, maybe there's a way to customize it? If there's the possibility of abuse, then people could somehow customize the way they want to? Have an audit log to see who is actually abusing it if it were to happen.

Maybe a merit-type thing, but can do an everyday refill.(just thinking out loud)

In my personal messages, I tend to use *thumbs up* reactions and not reply to messages. It just indicates that I read it and I acknowledge it. It's something my friends know about me so that it could be similar to this reaction thing.

Things escalated after the last time theymos introduced bunch of new merit sources, and mainly on the local boards, which made them a perfect place for alt account farming. Maybe its time for another readjustment.

Its a pity that feature was removed.
