Why does losing to a person feel worse than losing to a sportsbook?

I feel more emotional when I’m betting against a person and I lose, compared to losing on a sportsbook. Have you ever felt something like that?

You know, we have friends we gamble with in real life, so sometimes we make bets against each other, just for fun. I’ve also done it online. But I noticed that when I lose in those kinds of bets, I feel it more, like it hits harder. Compared to sportsbook bets where I can just move on right away.

Yeah I can see that, especially if you know the person and really want to beat them bad. I can see how it woudl be more of an emotional engagement as opposed to just going against someone that you don't really know or care for especially. I for one would be much more inclined to truly celebrate a win over my friend or brother as opposed to just winning against a computer or something lie that.

Close proximity to something you fight and list is somehow unbearable and one should not go into such thing,  alot of gamblers who prefer betting against the house do that because of the belief that when they lose or win there is no physical interaction and should be in privacy.

Actually when we play against another person, we unconsciously start comparing ourselves to them who is better, who is smarter. So losing is not only a loss of money, but also a blow to our position but in casinos or sportsbooks, this comparison doesn't exist, so losing doesn't feel so personal, I think if we reduce this habit of comparing ourselves a little and see it as just a game then losing to people can be taken much more easily.

Yeah, with losing to another person there's a pride attached knowing that your knowledge is lesser than the person who beats you, there's an adrenaline that wanted to push and retry to compete back while with bookies though there's a pressure of wanting to recover but that adrenaline is not that much as you understand that it was the house who beats you and who took your money. But similar to what you said as long as you know your grounds and you fully understand the risk it won't affect you whoever took your money.

I concur with what you both said. It is usually worse when one loses to a fellow individual since then it is not about money only but about personal. We tend to compare ourselves- abilities, knowledge, and decision making and when we lose it may seem to be a blow to our ego. It is no longer about the money but the outperforming. Conversely, the loss to a sportsbook is less emotional as it is the house, and not a person, that takes the bet. The individual aspect is lacking. I believe that being conscious and seeing gambling as entertainment will help to cope with such losses in a better and calmer state.

Personally I think losing is losing, it doesn't really matter how you lose or what you lose to when it comes to gambling but it's true that a lot of gamblers feel worse when they lose to a sports book more than when they lose to a person but that's totally okay because perhaps they feel that way from different reasons, some people prefer to stake high when betting on sportsbook and losing hurts them more because they always end up losing more, sports betting seems like a way for some people to make money because they apply strategy and it ends up hurting them when they lose due to their expectations

Yeah, we can say losing is losing because either way, emotions will still show up.  But I feel and will still say it kind of a bit different when another person is involved. The moment it becomes two humans, the emotional intensity just goes up.

There is this natural connection we have as humans.  like our emotions kind of feed off each other. The more people involved, the stronger that feeling becomes. If you have read Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill talked about something similar, like a “receiving and broadcasting station” between minds. That connection can actually amplify how we feel and stir up emotions between two persons.

So losing to a friend or a group of people tend to sting more than losing to a betting platform, because at that point it is not just about the loss.  it is also about that shared emotional space, and that is what make it feel deeper.

Yeah, I felt the same and that's why I stopped betting against my friends or people I know even it's only online. It's like a lose-lose situation to me: if you lose, you feel exactly like you said, but if you win it's not any better either, because your friend that lost to you starts hating you. Although in my opinion when you bet on gambling site, you don't bet against sportsbook, but rather against other bettors, you still don't know them personally, and that's why I prefer to do it this way.

You shouldn't feel bad, mate,  when you win. They can feel bad because they lost. Not necessarily, but I don't want to even try. Too risky, if you ask me.

I don't feel any difference. I've played poker against real people and I've lost money. I've also lost money via betting on various sports betting platforms. The pain of losing money is pretty much the same to me. I've never bet any real money with my friends(not via sports betting platforms) because the only 2 real friends I've ever had are not gambling at all. Maybe you just a more emotional and more extroverted person.
Or maybe you are younger than me. As you are getting old, you will find out that there's no point of feeling frustrated and regretful for losing small amounts of money.

I feel the opposite if you ask me, because when I bet against others such as friends then I'll take the fun as more important thing than the money.
Even if I win it, I wont feel that happy to take my friend's money and usually I will just use the money for something that we can do enjoy together like having some snacks or beers.
If I lose the bet, I wont think about it much as I take it like a having fun with friends.
Not sure for your case, are you betting against others who you are not familiar, that's why you feel it worse?

I do gamble with what I can afford to lose that is why I will not be bothered when I lose to someone else.
Gambling should be about letting go when you lose money to a casino or your fellow gamblers and that should never bring an hatred to anyone.

To be honest with you on this particular discussion, i understand your pains when it comes to lossing to a person than when you lose to a sportsbook, although i don't encourage gambling within my friends any one else due to my best friend is a victim of that, however betting with a person can involve gambling with your assets sometime and once you lose it you will lost a greater asset forever and it can lead to addiction if time is not taking, so that is the only reason when one losses betting with a person and it will be very painful, I'm saying this because i have seen two guys that gamble with the only asset that the father left for them and it happen that one lose the assets through gambling with a person and till now the person life hasn't remained the same, so with that reason i do channel my gambling in sports betting than betting with a person.

I completely agree to that as there's no such thing as guarantee when we talk about gambling, though similar to what you said, when you continue chasing good knolwedge about the game you'll enjoy following those patters that may give you some hint, and then again, it will depend on how the game will end as even how deep your research and how good you follow your known knowledge if luck is not on your side upset will always happen, you need to accept it and move forward.
