In light of recent news about California and Brazil law changes that forces Linux and other operating system to add mandatory Age Verification,
I have to ask if this can happen to Bitcointalk forum?

They are masking this as child protection, and we already saw they are doing something similar with Social Media accounts.
EU is also making some changes towards this, and I even saw reports they want to add something similar before accessing internet.

Someone created a github page listing of all Open Source Operating Systems that are implementing and not implementing Age Verification:
https://github.com/BryanLunduke/DoesItAgeVerify

PS
This is generally a question for theymos as admin of bitcointalk forum, but other members can join discussion.

I'm tired boss.

I'm tired of lawmakers and politicians around the world making the internet a cattle-farm.

I'm tired of changes being made to make online privacy moot under the guise of protecting children.

I'm tired of everyone around me being exploited by echo-chamber mechanics to divide the general population.

I'm tired of being told privacy and safety can't exist in the same room.

Operating system level age verification? What's next? You want my left nut?

Too bad. It's mine and so are my bitcoin keys.

I don't think this will ever really happen. Even if governments change the laws, protecting children is the parents' responsibility, not the state's. If an age limit is introduced on social media, children won't stop using those platforms, they'll just continue using them with an adult's identity. Even now many kids are already using social media through their relatives accounts. Even a 10-year-old can pretend to be an adult, after all there's no proper identity verification or facial recognition system in place.

Instead of introducing symbolic laws, if governments truly care about children they should improve the quality of education.
If age restrictions were applied to the entire internet, Bitcointalk would probably be one of the last places to be affected.

Yeah I suppose  real age restrictions could happen to the net.

Hmm I have been on this site since 2012 will be 14 years in August.

If this takes long enough  I would be here long enough.

I can prove the my ebay account is 2003 to 2026 means I am over 23

I wonder if I could do a go fund me to right that having an account on ebay for 23 years is proof of age.

I think I have been on PayPal for 20 plus years  and I am kyc there
I am on ebay and I am kyc there.

Frankly I do not want to do kyc here.

Sorry about my post.

Let Bitcointalk admin to be the one to bring this instead of disturbing the admin. This is totally unnecessary in my opinion.

I am certain that admin are not even thinking of this right now.

It's the whole debate in the internet about the responsibilities of parents, the chances of those "minors" that can still access the internet and other sites, and the policies from policy makers. But the real question, could this affect the forum? I don' think so, The forum ha global users, such policy is only applicable on sites that falls to jurisdictions of EU or area implementing this.

If our opinion matters, Bitcointalk will not have age verification. There is no discussion that is explicit in this forum so I don’t see anything we shall be protecting kids from, teens can be in this forum and will even learn much about life and crypto without having any real life issues so if that’s possible and yet we do not have much or may kids in this forum then Age verification is a total failure or waste of time.

Sure, but just because a forum has global users doesnt mean its untouchable.  If the EU or the US decides this site is a "harmful platform" for minors, they dont need to sue the owner (although they could do that too), they just pressure the hosting providers, and the search engines to blackball the domain.

This forum is not social media
Age verification will mean providing KYC
I don't think anyone will like to do KYC here
We want to remain anonymous, for privacy and security reasons

We don't post pornographic contents here
We don't deal on alcohol, tobacco or any substance that will harm a minor here

So, what will prompt this site to do age verification Huh

Long before the California and Brazilian law changes, the Forum implemented age verification on each user's profile page regardless of OS we're using. I think that's sufficient to comply with this law changes.
BTW, this might be a good idea for an upcoming April Fool's joke, requiring members to verify their age through their posts. We'll just have to wait and see. Wink

The forum already has an optional field where you can indicate your age. Theymos can change it to being mandatory and say he is complying with the law, although I doubt there will be any actual age verification laws which require the forum to do something like this. You can perhaps argue that gambling ads may be harmful to children, but it’s too extreme of a measure to age gate the entire site.

Depending on how strict these kinds of laws are, it can be used as a way to suppress and censor information which governments find objectionable. This would seem to be a violation of free speech rights, at least in the United States, however, making it about child protection makes this harder to challenge and repeal.

If I am getting pop OS's article correct, this age verifications that Linux OS's are supposed to do are as good as porn websites verifications, such verifications are good for nothing and as good as none.

If there is any solace in these two laws, it’s that they don’t have any real restrictions. There is no actual age verification. Whoever installed the operating system or created the account simply says what age they are. They can lie. They will lie. They’re being encouraged to lie for fear of being restricted to a nerfed internet.

BTW, this might be a good idea for an upcoming April Fool's joke, requiring members to verify their age through their posts. We'll just have to wait and see. Wink

If my memory serves me right, there was one kyc related April fools joke.
