Have you ever wondered why King Solomon asked God for wisdom instead of wealth?

You all need to remember that for about 18 years, Solomon and Hiram's navy brought 666 talents of gold out of Africa each year. This doesn't include the gold that S got from the Queen of Sheba and other places.

My question is, is the 666 number in Revelation referring to holding money and gold as a god?

King Solomon knew that as a king he need to have wisdom to be able to rule well, he knew that his followers will always look up to him concerning matters and issues of the kingdom so he needed to ask God for wisdom to be able to rule his people effectively. When God asked him to ask, he was already a king, and normally kings are not poor. I think he was contented with the wealth he has already, and it wasn't much of a big deal for him to rule as the wealthiest king, but from our own way, in present condition, for someone who is poor or barely surviving, the first wish will be wealth before wisdom.

I don't blame anyone asking for wealth over wisdom, with wisdom we can create wealth but wealth creates wealth too.

Wisdom is profitable in all things. As a leader Solomon needed wisdom to lead his people well, so when he was giving a blank check to ask anything from god. It was the first place where God gave man the will to ask what he wants, and it wast giving to him all he requested as at time he asked for it.

Apart from the wisdom to rule his people we should have known that Solomon have alot of riches at his door step and requesting for what he already has is of no use. From account we all know the house of David Solomon's father have been blessed with riches that can keep them going so what he requested is what i think he doesn't have. Although I will still commend him for his great choice because if it where to be some people,  they would have requested for more riches and even wished to be the richest man on earth, so his decision to ask for wisdom and understanding which he lacks is a very good one at that.

wisdom is profitable as a wise person can apply wisdom in certain scenerio and come out successfully which cannot be said of a person that's knowledgeable only. Also, with adequate knowledge a wise person can achieve all achievements so both are important as they go hand in hand most times but wisdom is more profitable

Wisdom is the application of knowledge, so in having wisdom, also have knowledge because wisdom is the principle thing. King Solomon knew what he was asking from God, he was a King that needed wisdom to pilot the affairs of his people, and we all know that true leadership comes with having the knowledge to do what is seen to be right. There is a simple proverb that says money brings money. But another proverb can be added that wisdom brings wisdom.
If you have enough wisdom, you will later own a lot of money and your power will also come. If you have power, you can control people, in that case you do not need enough knowledge. That is, having wisdom is important, in this case, if you have wisdom, you can control everything in the world.

Why Solomon didn't ask for wealth from God but wisdom instead is because he knew that with wisdom you get wealth. The greatest wealth in the world is wisdom, with wisdom he can rule his kingdom very well as a king and he can make more wealth and utilize it without mismanagement.  just as they said that one with God is majority that's is how Solomon's Wisdom from God made him the most vulnerable king among his kind, a ruler full of wisdom whom no man on earth as of that time never had. I will say wisdom is more profitable than knowledge. To me knowledge is like something you learn from someone either by encounter or by payment, but wisdom does not need you to learn from someone or you don't pay money to get wisdom but it's an inspiration that flows naturally without anyone telling you what to do at any given time. Wisdom is more of a person that gives answers to any questions without a second thought and his suggestion are always positive as if those suggestions where waiting for who will ask before solution is given. Another illustration about wisdom is that it has connection with the spirit of God , because whenever you are asked a question is like you are already connected to the portal of the spirit and in this realm nothing is hidden, all answer are given directly without a second thought since you are already in the realm of answer, that's how I see wisdom, it's an external gift that can not be gotten on earth it's a spiritual gift.

I know wisdom and knowledge are synonymous. You are separating these two words but actually these two express the same meaning. Wisdom is given by God and you cannot earn it with money. Through practice you gain knowledge about a subject which is the result of the correct application of wisdom. Guys take education to gain knowledge if they have talent they can easily become wise because they are talented. If you can apply talent properly then it will be wise.

There is no fixed limit to gaining knowledge from birth to death you can gain knowledge but you can only gain it in very small amount. To be successful you have to gain knowledge and apply that knowledge properly.

Solomon had wealth already, so wealth was not his problem and that moment. He was very young and ruling the people of Israel was no joke.
He asked for what was important to him because he desired to be a good ruler and not just for selfish interests. God granted him the wisdom because he was more interested in using his position to serve the people better and in addition, God added enormous wealth to his gifts.

If he had asked for riches instead, God may have denied him of it citing the selfishness in the request.

Solomon had enough wisdom already, to recognize:
1. His job of running a nation needs more than wealth;
2. Wisdom along with running a nation is part of producing wealth;
3. His nature was such that he recognized that God is made up of wisdom, and he wanted to be more godly... even though he lost it in mid-life, but regained it in old age.

This is the perfect reply I've read so far concerning this thread, imagine he had no wisdom as a king he would've granted the mean lady's wish and split the baby in halves but his wisdom made him to spot the liar and settled the dispute amicably, 1 Kings 3:16-28.  Another bible verse says "Wisdom is profitable to direct" (Ecclesiastes 10:10) Solomon was the king of a great nation back then and at tender age he needed to be wise to the able to lead properly so asking God for more wisdom at that youthful age is the best thing he did as a king, moreover being a king already puts him in a position of being wealthy so the wisdom to be a good leader was more important.

Now talking about which is profitable between wisdom and knowledge,  I think I can boldly say it's wisdom,  because knowledge is something you can acquire through education either formal or informal,  but wisdom can not be thought in any school, it's either you are wise or foolish.  With wisdom you will know that you need to get knowledge and that's why you choose to attend school. What Solomon did by asking God for wisdom when he could have asked for more wealth to his already gotten stockpile of generational wealth, it is what a lot of people today are getting off from by been very greedy to want to get all the wealth in life without aspiring for the wisdom, knowledge and ideas on how to  utilise the resources in their possession for humanity.

If you have wealth you don't need wisdom.
So always go for wisdom.

Well said, wisdom is the principal thing, with wisdom we can generate wealth unlimited, can also give us the mystery on how we could preserve this wealth for a longer period of time, but when we have wealth and lack wisdom, it will be very difficult for us to maintain that wealth and this is why many will eventually go bankrupt despite their wealth accumulated because of the absence of wisdom in all they do.
