Thinking of Solo Mining? A Practical Guide for Beginners (2026 Edition)

With the recent market volatility and the rise of efficient hardware like the Bitaxe or the Lucky Miner LG07, many newcomers are asking: "Is it worth it?".

I’ve put together this brief guide to help you navigate the basics and avoid common mistakes. My goal is to help this community grow stronger and more decentralized.

1. The "Safety First" Rule (Hardware & Electrical)
Mining isn't just about software. Even small 12W units need proper care:
  • Always use high-quality power supplies (PSUs). Cheap clones are a fire hazard.
  • Ensure your space is well-ventilated. Even low heat can degrade components over time.
  • Check your connections regularly. Dust is the silent enemy of hashpower.

2. Managing Expectations: The "Lottery" Reality
Solo mining with MH/s or GH/s gear is a statistical lottery.
  • Don't expect daily payouts. You are mining for the chance to hit a block.
  • Use it as a learning tool first. It’s the best way to understand the Stratum protocol and PoW mechanics.

3. Connection & Efficiency
For home miners, latency matters more than you think. Use a stable connection and a reliable solo pool (like CKPool) to ensure your shares aren't wasted.

Quote
"Helping the network stay decentralized is the best way to protect your own investment."

A Humble Reminder:
I am grateful to God for the opportunity to share this knowledge with you all. We are part of a financial revolution, and staying safe and educated is our best defense.

Do you have questions about your setup? Post your specs below (Power, Hashrate, Temps), and I will try my best to help you optimize it!

I am dedicated to contributing positively to Bitcointalk. If this guide helped you, your feedback  means a lot to me.

Thinking of Solo Mining? A Practical Guide for Beginners (2026 Edition)
With very high total hashrate of Bitcoin network and super high difficulty of Bitcoin blockchain, solo mining has become harder and harder, it's more like trying with a lottery ticket but you can try it if you want.

There are guides for running Bitcoin full node and solo mining, so checking them as I believe they're helpful for you and your guide.
NERDMINER: Bitcoin lottery miners
[GUIDE] The simplest Full Node guide ever.
[Guide] How to run a Bitcoin Core full node for under 50 bucks!

Sometimes solo miners find their lottery blocks so good luck to you or anyone who want to be Bitcoin solo miners as well.

Well, this is some solid and explicit guide. However, I think solo mining of bitcoin can be likened to buying lottery tickets instead of a steady paycheck.

The safety first is spot on, especially with those cheap PSUs with high tendency of electrical fires. Keeping the system cool and with a steady power source/ network connection matters a lot. These add up the cost of running the miner.

In reality, its mostly pure luck especially with the network brutality, but make no mistake real solo wins happen, just like 2 guys who got $200k+ blocks this year already.

Thank you @MusaMohamed and @Goodwater87 for these valuable additions. You've hit the nail on the head regarding the Lottery aspect.

In 2026, solo mining isn't a business plan; it's a statement of support for the network decentralization wrapped in a lottery ticket. As I see it, there is zero mathematical certainty of a block reward given the current difficulty and electricity parity. We are essentially "buying luck" with hashpower.

@Goodwater87, your point about safety is paramount. People often forget that a cheap PSU is a ticking time bomb. High-quality hardware isn't just about efficiency; it's about not burning your house down for a 1-in-a-million chance.

I see solo mining as a digital library of experience you learn the core code, you understand the hardware, and you participate in the consensus. If a block hits, it's a miracle. If not, the knowledge gained is the real steady paycheck.

Is anyone here still running old S19s for lottery purposes, or is everyone moving to small-scale Bitaxe-style setups for the efficiency?

Solo mining is still interesting if you treat it as learning and supporting decentralization rather than pure profit. On new or low-difficulty networks it can actually make sense for a while. Just important to keep expectations realistic and not put too much hashrate into something without checking the code and genesis first.

A solo miner here...

The higher your hashrate the higher your chance of hitting a block, there are many solo mining calculators online, however I advise to only go into this if you have extremely cheap electricity.

For mining, electricity is all that matters, how cheap is your electricity gives you greater advantage, pool mining or solo mining combined.
Also I advice you do this with no expectations of getting anything back unless it's alts that you are solo mining.

You can go on for years without solving any blocks.
