While writing a reply to a thread, a thought about addiction crossed my mind. We usually describe addiction as something that ruins a person, whether through gambling or other destructive behaviors. However, I started wondering if it is possible for an addiction to have a positive impact on someone's life. Consider a gambler who is addicted but has mastered the craft so well that their winnings consistently fund their entire lifestyle. Even though they cannot stop gambling, their success supports them financially.
In this scenario, should we still view such a lifestyle as an addiction, or is it something positive? Generally, society imagines an addict as someone whose life has been ruined and who has become a liability to their family and community. But if the compulsion leads to success and stability, what do we call that? Can an addiction truly be considered positive if the outcome is beneficial?

If they are addicted to gambling then they would be betting on games frequently.
If the housedge is considered, the longer we play the more we lose and so addicted gamblers will eventually lose more in the end.
So I don't think there will be any positive effects of addiction towards gambling.
The effects of gambling addiction are completely and only negative. The more you play in the long run, the more these small losses accumulate and turn into big losses. Because the algorithm is built this way, but even though they are there, many people do not understand them, and this is how an addicted gambler usually loses control and tries to cover his losses by playing again and again, but in reality this pushes him into deeper losses. That is why it is okay as entertainment, but if gambling gets out of control, then it is no longer entertainment, but rather becomes a destructive cycle.
you are right mate. Addiction is very dangerous, it can lead you to sell your properties just to gamble and when you lose it you will become desperate to find more money to gamble. gambling always favors the house, you only need luck to win. This addiction starts when you are playing eveytime and the urge for it keeps growing. Then you will start chasing losses without setting limits. When someone doesn't have a limit they lose control which affects their decisions relationships, and even mental health. Some people see gambling as an entertainment in their first try but when they are now using it as a means of survival, that is when the problem starts. It's important to have self control, limits and be disciplined.

But come to think of it, this addiction thing is not nice at all.

I can’t even imagine that a person will reach the point were he will want to sell a property maybe his car just to gamble.  that one has pass normal thinking, I see it as a kind of madness level.

That is why it is good for people to just control gambling from early stage, set limits and know when to stop.  because once it enters that deep level, coming back will not be easy at all.

That part is the loophole that the OP forgot to look at; it's rare to see an addicted gambler who has other things to think about other than how to constantly be gambling, and the more time they are spending, the more the money which got recently won is going back to the industry. Their desire to win is never satisfied, and they always have an uncontrollable urge to keep on gambling till there is nothing left to stake with.

Exactly. Winning release certain dopamine that wants us to keep hitting that dopamine levels again and again.
Hence why it's quite tempting for a gambler to continue gambling even after winning a wholesome amount of money.
The issues arise only when we start losing money and try to chase the losses and then keep losing the money to the casino.

High levels of addiction to gambling have a negative impact on a person's life, not only financially but also mentally, socially and family life. Basically, addiction starts because you lose control, due to which a person becomes emotional and makes decisions without judging his own abilities. The mentality of compensating for losses is basically addiction that breaks a person's limits, and affects financial risks beyond risk capacity. It should not be seen as a source of income because when a person thinks of making a living from gambling, he does not think about losing, but only desires to win. Therefore, self-observation and control are needed to understand reality.

Not just with the losses, even with wins too, that dopamine rush can make us continue chasing those wins, and one thing about wins is that, a gambler never gets satisfied with winning, the more it comes, the more they keep chasing, as they’ll have that feeling that luck is on their side and they’ll most likely wanna do all they can with that moment, some would even wanna seize the opportunity to win back all the money they’ve lost all these while and like we know, this doesn’t always end well.

No addiction has a positive side, reaching a stage where you are addicted to something means that you are already affected negatively by it. A gambler that is addicted doesn't have any benefits of being addicted to Gambling. The outcome of an addiction is always detrimental and has no good outcomes. I have not seen someone that who is a gambling addict enjoying any benefits of gambling addiction. A person only gets addicted to anything because they are not disciplined. Addiction doesn't lead to success or stability

While gambling, a gambler can gamble aggressively by repeatedly losing, while a person can gamble aggressively in the hope of winning more money. This completely depends on the mentality of a gambler. As a gambler loses more and more, his passion or greed increases manifold, while when the gambler can win, he starts betting to win more money, which is absolutely not right. Greed always leads to danger, this is proven time and time again, so we should make the right decision and gamble for entertainment purposes, choosing gambling to earn money is dangerous.

A player can play aggressively or however they want; the trick is that they must know that the money they risk is money that was previously destined to be lost. If they lose it, nothing happens; they had planned for it, because it's an investment in fun. If they spend all the money, they shouldn't put in more, only what they previously planned, and then play in whatever style they want.
