You're only partly right. I did create that account in 2016 with yesterday's prank in mind—I'm a long-term thinker. But it's not the only alt account I have.

The way he asked for a loan confirmed it is a scam.
A real borrower would understand how lending board and collateral works, this guy acted like the concept was completely foreign to him.

Depends on what you use to advertise or post here. Could be some website or loans. They might scrape your posting history or go through just before soliciting.

As far as I know, PM-spammers get banned "if enough people report it", so just report it.

I have reported him as well but I suppose just two people is not enough.

What strikes me is why he chose you and me. He probably sent the PM to someone else who doesn't visit the Reputation section and therefore hasn't commented on the thread, but it doesn't seem like he sent the PM to a dozen people or more. In my case, I could think it was because of the username that he thought I’d be willing to lend it to him but since he chose you too, I’m not sure what the criteria were. It was probably pretty random.

I've anonymized the username of the person who sent this to me because, he doesn't break any rules and offers collateral, but a PM like this seems suspicious as fuck.

I don't think he did not break any rule as very possibly it breaks at least one rule.

Going this route (for the interpretation) would mean that many people on the forum would be guilty of the same.

The sender's motive is suspicious, or should I say is mixed in my view. Asking for a collateral doesn't guarantee his innocence, but judging by the OP's experience, I don't think he could go to someone like that if his intentions are bad.

We don't know whether the user's email address has been changed or not.
Note that BPIP doesn't record the email address changes and therefore there's still the possibility that the user has changed the email address.

There was a pretty common trend sometime back especially with accounts that were locked for sharing malicious links in the forum. What happened is that the hacker would silently access the account without changing any log in credentials which could easily alert the owner, and then they would just randomly post the malicious links and then log out.

I am thinking about the same scenario except that this time round, it's not through a post but via PM

I didn't receive any PM like this, but I received something similar in the past.
Generally I am ignoring most messages from unknown newbies, and I would certainly suggest not clicking/opening on any links if they are sending them.
There is also increase of scam with loans, as we can see in Scam Accusation board.

That is a difficult question answer. If it were not a mass spam event where the sender was trying to cast the net as wide as possible in the hope of trying to scam as many people as he could, it would probably relate to how the potential scammer would perceive the specific potential victim.

Are you sure the user is banned? I am asking this because there is no record of the user being banned in the modlog.
Could it be that the user was banned temporarily rather than permanently? That may be why the ban is not reported in the modlog?

Who even lends anyone $14K based on a hello? I would probably steer clear and trust in what your gut is telling you. The entire situation would be a massive red flag to me, especially coming from someone with a senior account from 2016 and last 20 posts coming from 2018. Obviously not someone who spends much time on the forum so that might exlain some lack of etiquette.

Lol, I merited igebotz because as he is staff I took for granted that he knew the user is banned but the link to his profile doesn't show a proof. I don't see anything on this regard on bpip.org either where you sometimes see "autoban user" or stuff like that. Just that he has not been active for the last 3 days.

The signature isn't wiped, so it's only a temporary ban. Those don't show up in modlog, BPIP doesn't know about them.

I came to type this; the user got only temporary ban ( warning) and it's only visible to mods on their profiles.

I didn’t get the message that is being discussed in this thread. I do get them quite frequently though. This is the last one I received. I guess it’s been about a week, showing how often I get such begging messages from users here.
