I saw this news recently but I did not know the reason Oracle is cutting off almost 30% of his workers. I did a little more research to this this particular news and it was what I thought when I read the headline that cutting up to 30000 employees to pay for AI data centres. The works did not receive a noticed before but they were sent an email on the 31st that they are no more employed.

Employees across the US, India, Canada, and Mexico woke up on 31 March to termination emails from “Oracle Leadership” with no prior warning. TD Cowen estimates the cuts will affect 18% of Oracle’s 162,000-person workforce and free up $8-10 billion to fund AI infrastructure. Oracle has not confirmed the total number.

This is just plain stupid. The purpose of a business in the economy is to provide a solution and decrease unemployment rates. Now they are just increasing it by 30% by the hypothetical idea of competing with existing AI tech giants like Amazon and Google. They are stretching themselves too thin with being desperate in joining in the AI Hype Bubble of building Data Centers. I guess they wanted to find a way to please their investors.

So this is to be expected. Of course, corporations and any employers in general will try to reduce costs as much as possible by replacing employees with AI (where possible). But every stick has two ends - layoffs lead to a decrease in the purchasing power of society. By the way, Huang (CEO Nvidia) recently suggested that every employee in a corporation should spend half of his salary on tokens (to generate AI), as this supposedly indicates that he really works at a modern level of training. That is, it's like a hint - who doesn't buy tokens. He will be fired.

This is not the first time. Oracle laid off about 3,000 employees in September 2025, and the number of employees is still more than 100,000. After these reductions, they may be completely replaced by artificial intelligence.

This is just plain stupid. The purpose of a business in the economy is to provide a solution and decrease unemployment rates. Now they are just increasing it by 30% by the hypothetical idea of competing with existing AI tech giants like Amazon and Google. They are stretching themselves too thin with being desperate in joining in the AI Hype Bubble of building Data Centers. I guess they wanted to find a way to please their investors.
This is a sad reality; almost all tech CEOs are now blaming AI for mass job cuts. But these firms' main agenda is not to create jobs but to make profit. They will do everything within their power to cut costs so that they can make more money. The AI industry is the new bride of big companies, and none of them wants to be left behind.

It's the government and the workers' union's responsibility to protect workers. But sadly, the government will do nothing because they have been lobbied by these big companies.

yet if its real. the timing is just unbelievable. they make sure everyone is making fun of each other. 

but then they'd be seriously frowning the next day if its true. AI can really ruin the day you least expect when the HR is funnier than you. big companies been doing mass lay offs though, i think its not surprising for some of the employees especially those who knows their job isn't necessary anymore.

I hope it will be a joke because not that AI directly replaced the workers and the workers are almost 30000. So it would be better if it is just a joke. We are going to soon find out by tomorrow if it is a joke or not a joke. Just like I said, I hope it is a joke. I see no good reason such high number of worker are sacked.
I hope that it's a joke since today is April fools day. But I don't think that a company like Oracle is going to make a joke to their employees with something such as this kind of stunt. It's not a good joke when a lot of mouths are being fed by them through these hard working employees. And if it's not a joke, a lot of tech companies have already laid off their employees not just 5% to 10% but furthermore because they have adopted AI. It's also a way to cut expenses and for them, it's more productive to have that kind of transition from human labor to AI productivity.

There are lots of tech companies going through these huge waves of redundancies and it is a difficult situation. On the one hand every business needs to stay efficient, sometimes they get bloated as they expand and then need to trim back in areas that at unprofitable. On the other hand a lot of roles are having AI hammered in as a replacement, which it can do to a certain degree but it is definitely bad for IT employees who are being cast aside and the quality of output can drop in many cases. The timing is rather suspicious though, as they are using all the controversy around the Iran war and Trumps never ending rambling on the subject to hide this piece of news - but they are certainly not the first big company to do this lately.

Although we expect things like this, it’s still sad to see it happen. This is the reality, whether we like it or not. I think other industries and companies will follow because of AI. We will feel its impact even more over time, and competition in the tech industry will only get tougher. But we can’t really blame those companies. If we were in their position, we’d probably do the same, cut costs, save more, and try not to hurt the business, or even make it better.

I feel this companies are being greedy, just like you've said, their main agenda is not to create jobs but to make profit, but I feel, in making profit, this companies can still use AI in expanding their product base and increasing profit, I mean the AI can help with whatever they have on ground to expand, but yet they choose to minimize job creation while maximizing profit with reduction of staff's.

IMO the next year is going to be a bloodbath in AI.

Too much spent, for not enough results.
Not saying AI is not useful, just that spending $10 to sell a product for $5 is not sustainable. You can *hope* that sooner or later your costs are going to drop to $6 and you can sell it for $12.
But, hope is a lousy plan.

It's going to be the .com implosion all over again.

First they asked the workers to help them build the technology, and now it's up and running. They are cutting down who made it happen, pretty much expected and there is no point in blaming them because the evolution of AI is going to cost lot of jobs and more to come in the upcoming years.

Upskill isn't enough for a regular midlevel employee so they better focus on their plan B now itself so they don't have to lose their mind when the time comes.

If an organization impacts the lives of 30,000 people at once then communication and ethical responsibility become very important. If there is no advance notice and severance support and career transition help then it can be seen not only as a business decision but also as a leadership failure. The standards of large companies should be better.
There's no short notice on this lay off and that's making these employees lives into shame and I agree, the leadership has failed there.

I can understand the reason on this cut off but they have to give at least this prior notice to the employees or team leaders.

Receiving that 6am in the morning had terribly made these people's daily routine in a heart break. This made me remember about that company during the height of pandemic that during a zoom call, he has also fired all participants at that time.
