Bitcoin’s Great Unplug: $1.5 Billion in Hardware Behind the AI Pivot

The hashrate public bitcoin miners shed in the first half of 2026 carries an uncomfortable price tag: roughly $1.5 billion in equivalent hardware investment, even at an assumed acquisition price of just $20 per terahash (TH/s).

A previous Miner Weekly issue estimated that public miners lost 75 EH/s of realized hashrate while their directly reported HPC and AI revenue rose 52% quarter over quarter. Much of that retreat reflected a redirection of power toward AI infrastructure.

The revenue growth showed what operators were gaining. But putting a purchase price on the disappearing hashrate helps illuminate what they had already paid for.

At $20 per TH/s, 75 EH/s corresponds to $1.5 billion of mining machines. That excludes the buildings, electrical equipment, cooling and installation needed to operate them.

That is an often-overlooked cost of the AI transition: investors had already financed the mining capacity being displaced. At some sites, equipment was marked down within months of starting production, raising questions about how much of that investment mining could recover before AI took over.

Yeah years ago when it was  purchased it may have been 1.5 billion.

But if it is all s19 gear current value is closer to 2 dollars a th or 150 million .

And the logistics  are expensive to sell it

Core Sci posted $30M mining vs $77M AI colocation in a single quarter. The numbers already answered this debate — mining doesn't need saving, it needs a realistic exit strategy.

Yeah and without a huge price jump this will plague btc.

To be equal to ai btc price should be 165 to 180k now.

And when the 1/2ing comes price needs to be 250-360k

If those numbers do not happen more power to ai from mining will happen.

The less mining equipment involved, the higher the profit. I believe that a balance between supply and demand will eventually be reached in the mining sector. Right now, many companies are building large data centers using borrowed funds.

In a couple of years, there will be a vast number of such facilities, so profits in this field could well decline.

Bitcoin Miners Face Funding Squeeze as AI Expansion Costs Hit $50 Billion

BlocksBridge said Bitcoin miners' AI infrastructure investment is placing growing pressure on their finances, with upfront investment costs and financing costs identified as the main risks.
VanEck and BlocksBridge said miners' debt has surged, and estimated that about $50 billion in additional funding will be needed to complete planned AI infrastructure projects.
The report said interest rates, potential equity dilution and fundraising capacity at publicly traded Bitcoin miners including IREN will be key factors in determining the success of their shift into AI.

Call me greedy but I would love this to happen, I mean I got to solve a bitcoin block on my own, the chances of it happening is just way too big because of these massive organisations running massive mining farms.

I want them gone if that's the case,  they should go AI center I don't care, Bitcoin mining difficulty is way too gigantic for smaller miners to solve something and it sucks.

I accept that I am late to the game, maybe if I joined very earlier I can have a different result but I will be very happy to see Bitcoin hashrate cut in half due to people exiting to AI.

Bitfarms targets zero bitcoin on the balance sheet as it pivots to AI
The company is actively selling bitcoin and redeploying capital into AI-focused data centers as part of a broader transformation away from mining.
Link

The shift reflects a broader trend across the bitcoin mining sector, where companies are repurposing energy infrastructure for high-performance computing and AI workloads. Bitfarms is advancing a 2.2 gigawatt development pipeline across North America and targeting AI-driven revenue beginning in 2027, according to its 2025 full-year results.

Quality and Certainty of Power Assets
341 MW 2 energized and 430 MW secured in markets where capacity can’t be easily replicated
https://investor.bitfarms.com/static-files/881289f7-012c-4b4a-b462-0d7832de272e
this is great but do we know how profitable is the pivot? I mean how much money is bitfarm making via AI instead of traditional Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency mining?

I’ve looked at their reports and news updates: according to the data, earnings for 2026 will be zero, as construction is underway and the first major data center is not expected to launch until 2027. However, these are only projections, and the timelines could end up being longer.

According to BlocksBridge Consulting’s latest Miner Weekly newsletter, Bitcoin’s seven-day average hashrate has recovered above 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s), equivalent to 1,000 exahashes per second (EH/s), its highest level since March 3.

Hashrate measures the computing power securing the Bitcoin network. The recovery suggests that miners still operating on the network are seeing little relief from competition, despite the industry’s ongoing transition to AI workloads.

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty increased 5.92% on Oct. 16, with BlocksBridge projecting another 5.16% increase at the next adjustment. If the estimate holds, difficulty will have risen roughly 11.4% across two consecutive adjustments.

“That’s hardly the breathing room remaining miners might have expected from the AI migration,” BlocksBridge wrote, referring to the growing competition facing operators that have continued mining Bitcoin.
