I have observed the killing of innocent people from December 2022 up to early 2026. The number of bandits has increased tremendously, and this has affected Nigeria badly, especially in places like Maiduguri, Jos, Kwara, and other regions. One begins to wonder how a country with leaders and numerous security agencies is still facing such a serious crisis. Based on my research, I have discovered the following possible reasons behind these killings:
1. Poverty Banditry is partly driven by poverty, especially in Northern Nigeria, where some parents release their male children at an early age to fend for themselves, while keeping the female children at home. This situation increases poverty levels and leaves many young people unemployed. As the economy becomes tougher every day, some youths can be lure to join terrorist or bandit groups as a means of survival and to escape poverty.
2. Money (Ransom) Another major reason is money. Bandits engage in kidnapping and killings to demand ransom. As it is often said, “money is the root of all evil.” Many youths may see banditry as a fast way to make money. In many cases, bandits kidnap large numbers of people; sometimes 70 to 100 victims and also demand huge amounts of money, often hundreds of millions of naira.
3. Land and Mineral Resources Conflicts over land and natural resources can also lead to violence and some lands are more fertile or rich in minerals such as gold, tin, or crude oil than others. This can drive groups to attack communities, displace residents, and take over such areas for their own benefit. Recently, many mineral resources are discovered most of villages or neighbouring town bandits invaded. This can be factor that make people to come together to form terrorist in order drive the owner or take over the land and the resource by force.
4. Revenge Revenge is another factor. When one group attacks and kills members of another group, the victims’ relatives may seek retaliation. This cycle of violence continues and escalates over time. For example, there have been incidents where large numbers of people were killed and properties destroyed without any demand for ransom, suggesting revenge as the motive. Ones will wonder that what is reason behind their killing
5. Weak Security System Nigeria’s security system also appears weak. In a country with strong security, it would be difficult for bandits to operate freely. However, there have been cases where armed groups enter communities, carry out attacks, and even take control of areas for hours and days without being stopped. This raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of the security agencies. Many bandit group are even sending message to the community to be visited and some open up about negotiations if community leaders do not want them to invade their communities.
6. Political Factors This last one baffles me, and I cannot decode why government officers would be involved in sponsoring terrorists or supplying them with weapons. According to research, many groups who were once government honourables may be trying to disrupt the peace of the country in order to use it against them in the next election. This happened during President Jonathan's regime; killings were so extensive that everyone was suggesting that Jonathan should resign from office. Then, when late Buhari came on board as a presidential candidate, he used insecurity as a yardstick for his election campaigns, stating that he was once a military head and if he were given power, he would end insurgency.
Another means reveals that most retired officers who were not taken good care of after their retirement, maybe their gratuity and pension are not well taken care of, may view it to form a terrorist in order to make it another source of income. In Kwara State, to be precise, more than 100 million has been paid to bandits as ransom between 2024 and 2026. Another source also argues that if not with government permission, how could a group of people bring in sophisticated weapons to Nigeria that would be more superb than our military weapons? Ever since, soldiers have been killed in the battle of insurgency. What has the government done for the families of soldiers that were killed in the battle? Because most soldiers that have encountered terrorists are either killed or wounded. Some cannot longer work, walk, hear or see again.
What has the government done for their family? How do they really care about the family? What is their gain of dying for their country? These are reasons that make retired officers form or join bandits bandits.

I agree with most of your point like the poverty, unemployment and the lure of ransom money are big reasons banditry keeps growing because when people have limited options, some gets pulled into it as a way of survival but the weak security is a major concern. When attacks keep happening in places like Jo’s and Maiduguri people starts losing confidence in protection. I also agree that revenge and land/resources conflict also contributes to this because once it’s starts, it becomes very difficult to stop but I think we ought to be careful concluding that its sponsored by the government. How do you know that, what prove of evidence do you have. The matter is a serious claim but for me the main issue is that this things happening is not just one cause but a combination of many things happening behind the scenes and u til we all tackle the root cause together, the problem will keep happening.

How could what you have outlined here be the cause of the rising increase of banditry in Nigeria, I bet to disagree with you on this one because that's not the cause of it, there are top government officials that are sponsoring this group of persons to kill the citizens and get paid, haven't you wonder where and how they are getting ammunitions from?, what kind of jobs do they do that will make them get sophisticated weapons and carry out their attacks if they are not sponsored by a group of people?,. The government won't do anything to the victims of that ugly incident that took place in Jos and the ones that has happened before because they don't care about us and what we go through, how can bandits have a tiktok account and ask people to drop account details for giveaway and the government can't even do anything about it by tracking them, what is the big deal in wiping out this bandits that is terrorizing the citizens?, if the government wasn't part of it they would have done a massive attack on them.

Don't you know when government refuse to do the right thing some group come together to form cancus in order to frustrate the government policies and there are informant withing the government and security agencies. If not because informant within the Nigeria soldiers would have end insurgency. Those informants are government personnel. That is where our security problem. A soldier was interviewed in our community he said if they have face bandit one no one or face me and face you, they would have end them all, the problem was they don't know when and where this bandits will strike and sometimes, they plant bomb . You see, the government is directly and indirectly one of the reasons banditry is increasing. Bola Ahmed Tinubu fought for local government autonomy; i.e, he wants local governments to receive their allocations directly. However, many governors have not allowed this to fully work. Tinubu also increased the security votes for every state to help finance the military and other security agencies, but how many governors are actually using these funds effectively? Moreover, some past leaders; who were once governors or senators; are now openly criticizing and condemning the current governors and president over the failure of security. From what they are saying, there appears to be little sincere sympathy or empathy. Instead, the issue is often being used as a political tool for future election campaigns, in order to attract more voters to their parties., someone within the system leaks information to the terrorists about their plans.

I would have agreed unconditionally to all the above stated facts as possible causes of banditory in Nigeria but because of the sentimental or sectional killing, I will say it has gone beyond that. Taking statistics of the death rate and the most affected once on the bandits killing i will say it is more of a quest for power than ransom, religious fight and some hidden agendas that will soon be unveiled at the appointed time because if unemployment where to be the cause they would have requested for change instead of killing innocent people as they are doing.

I get your point and I won’t deny that informants within the system can make things get worse because if truly there are people leaking information, it will definitively weaken the effort of the security agencies but I also feel it’s not just about informants alone, the issue is way bigger than that. The truth is making policy is one thing but proper implementation is another because if those in charge at the state and local level don’t use those opportunities well, the impact won’t be felt. I also agree with you that politics is starting to overshadow real solution, instead of focusing on how to end this insecurity, some leaders are already using it as tool for future election and that is not helping the situation.

Unemployment can also be a major reason why many groups rise against the government. One man shared his experience: he applied to a particular university in Nigeria and was invited for a CBT exam, which he passed. He was later invited for an interview and also succeeded. After that, he was called for credential verification and was confirmed qualified. Despite all this, he was not given the job. He explained that he spent a lot of money traveling from Kwara State to Lagos State with the hope of being employed, but he was eventually not considered. According to him, many people were later recruited into the university; some of whom neither applied nor passed through the required stages. Some even allegedly bought the job slots. Another example occurred in 1999 in Kwara State. When Governor Mohammed Lawal won the election, he dismissed a group of civil servants, claiming they were illegally recruited. Those who were sacked later formed a union against the government. 2003 When Bukola Saraki contested for governor, this group strongly campaigned against the incumbent government until he won the election. After winning, one of his first actions was to reinstate those who had been dismissed and provide them with employment again. Injustice and lack of fairness can cause serious problems in a country. In Nigeria, people tend to tolerate a lot of unfair treatment. In many foreign countries, citizens protest even over a slight increase in the price of basic goods like bread. However, in Nigeria, people often adapt quickly to difficult situations instead of resisting them. But this new generation may not continue to tolerate such conditions.

Other militant groups in Nigeria may specify unemployment as the reasons behind there mischievous behaviour but not that of the bandits, if it where to be it would have been mentioned before now. Before amnesty was given to the nigga delta militants in 4 October 2009, there quest for empowerment and provision of job opportunities was clearly stated as an agenda behind there actions but for the bandits all they are interested in is kidnapping and killing of Christians and few Muslims that refused to abide to there doctrine which indicates it is not a fight for unemployment but a religious battle.

The general people is not getting relief from the bad situation in Nigeria, violence is increasing day by day. With time, unrest is increasing, killings and various heinous acts are increasing, the security of the general people is decreasing day by day. If the Nigeria government wanted to, it could have controlled the bad situation to a great extent, but they are not taking any steps to stop the bad things. The government is not taking any steps to ensure that the general public lives well. In fact, nothing better can be expected from those who are actually looting the country's money in the name of controlling the country. Bad times or conditions are not permanent at all, so I am waiting for good times to come.
