I was looking for an apartment and I called my agent one day and he told me that the owners of the apartment available at that moment do not need a person from my tribe occupying the apartment, they might have had a negative encounter with someone from my place and assumed that since I belong to that tribe, I also behave the same way. That's what prejudice causes. And just like a virus, prejudice can harms its victims, and most times we're unaware that we are infected. Prejudiced can come in different forms, not just only toward those of another nationality, race, tribe, or language but also toward those of a different religion, gender or social class. Most times , we tend to judge people negatively based on their age, education, disabilities, or physical appearance. Yet, we still feel that we're are not prejudiced because it's easier to recognize it in others than in ourselves. The truth is that all of us are prejudiced to some degree.

Get the Facts Prejudice is often based on misinformation. E.g Many people have wrongly conclude that everyone who has a disability is sad or bitter.People who believe such may point to examples or alleged evidence that seems to confirm their bias. And they think that anyone who disagrees with them is ignorant. The truth is, without knowing the facts, we make bad decisions and misjudge people. But if we know the facts about people, we are less likely to believe common but false assumptions about them. And once we learn that we have not been told the truth about a particular group, we may be more likely to question assumptions that we have made about other groups of people. Therefore, remember that sweeping generalizations about groups of people do not apply to all individuals of that group, acknowledge that the information you have about others may be limited and try to get the facts from a reliable source.

Show Empathy When we focus too much on how different others are from us, we tend to conclude that such differences are flaws or defects and we might be regarding as inferior those who are different from us. Once we develop this negative view of others, it becomes difficult to show empathy and lack of empathy is a symptom of prejudice. Empathy is the ability to put oneself in another’s place and feel what they feel. When we empathize with someone, we become aware of just how similar we are to that person. We realize that he or she may feel the way we feel and may react the way we react and it helps us to see that all people, no matter what their background may be, are humans and the more we focus on how similar they are to us, the less likely we will be to judge them negatively. Empathy will also help us to respect others. When we strive to understand another person’s struggles, we are more likely to empathize rather than to criticize. So try to see beyond the differences and find similarities between you and people from a group you may view negatively. For example, imagine yourself in there shoes by asking yourself how you will react if someone made you feel worthless, How would you feel if others judged you before even getting to know you, If you were part of their group, how would you like others to treat you?

If you look around the world, you will find that people have all kinds of opportunities. If you are barred from some specific opportunity, find a different one. Don't take the freedom of others away from them, even if they seem to be acting unjustly. If you do, you are acting just like they are.

Recognize the strength of others Egotism can lead to prejudice. An egotistical person has an inflated opinion of his own worth. He views himself as superior and judges people who are different from him as being inferior. To avoid this kind of thinking, we need to cultivate humility as it allows us to recognize that in some areas of life others are superior. We should try to have a realistic view of ourselves and remain aware of our own failings. Acknowledge that others are strong in areas where you are weak. Do not assume that all people from a particular group have the same flaws, so instead of drawing negative conclusions about a person who is from a particular group of people, ask yourself if the traits you dislike about that person actually bad, or are they just different from yours and what areas is this person more capable than I am?

Expand Your Circle of Friends If we isolate ourselves from people whom we view negatively, we may encouraging our prejudices. And if we limit our friends to people who are like us, we may tend to think that our way is the only acceptable way of thinking, feeling, and acting. To avoid that, we must be willing to befriend those who are different from us because When we get to know others personally, we begin to understand why they do things differently. And as we grow closer to them, we start to see them as part of our own group and we'll come to value them more. So look for opportunities to speak with people who are from a country, ethnicity, or language group different from yours, you can ask them to tell you about themselves, listen to their stories, and find out what is important to them. If you try to understand how their experiences have shaped their personality, you may develop a positive attitude toward people from their group.

Show Love What does it mean? Doing kind things for others brings people together. The more you show your love for others, the less prejudiced you become. The more love you feel, the less room you leave in your heart for hatred or contempt. So, think of specific ways that you can show love for people who are from a group that you may have viewed negatively. These actions do not have to be elaborate eg you can engage in small talks, even if they do not speak your language fluently, be patient when they act in ways you do not understand, be sympathetic if they talk about their problems.
