Both things, but I don't know what others will think, my impression is that in the last years the focus has shifted from the more philosophical point of view of the first years, and even from the technological, and the new adopters don't care so much about other aspects that don't have to do with pure speculation.

What is the philosophy behind bitcoin, do you mean the investor aspect instead of technological supporter, I guess that is what you meant but in the mean time as a newbie, you should learn a few technical aspects like how to handle your wallet and securing your transactions, if you want to go more technical then you should try running your own nodes, this are the most technical aspects in bitcoin that can interest a newbie.

I think focusing more on the technical aspects can actually help you well to know much about the Bitcoin, I know that there’s some people that know what is Bitcoin is all a about and they don’t know anything on how the technical aspects functions, but still achieved their goals in Bitcoin after learning it for severals of years. So in your question you stated that do bitcoin more technology or philosophy, which I think their all works together there’s not too much difference between them if don’t make a mistakes.

Learn only the technical side; philosophy is merely a matter of opinion, dependent on technical understanding, not something to be seriously studied.
Most people who claim to be "free" but store their Bitcoin on centralized exchanges actually know nothing about technical matters.

lol… exactly my point, why complicate things! they just sit there toiling with my emotions, I had to bring it here for clarity.… more codes is hilarious, I couldn’t stop laughing..

So the technicals it is I guess if I understood you correctly… right! Thank you

Bitcoin is a technology that implements a philosophy.

Right on.  they are basically different parts of the same thing. Gotcha

I’m still trying to understand Bitcoin a lot better... Recently, I got into a conversation with some of my investor friends and asked their opinion of where Bitcoin truly sits.  one described it as a pure technology, a decentralized ledger and mining.
while the other described it as a philosophy, freedom from banks and money of the people.

Bitcoin is both technology and philosophy, but it is more philosophy than technology, so it would be good to concentrate on both aspects simultaneously. Bitcoin's philosophy gives it its distinct unstoppable power and cultural impact, while its technology makes it dependable. Without both, Bitcoin would have been just another failed digital currency.

Bitcoin firstly itself is a technical product that is revolutionized so that it has been accepted by many people at super quick unprecedented adoption growth rate. Then, it has many characteristics to make up its bullish future with many solid foundational pillars for its future growth.

It's about technology and revolutionized contributions from Bitcoin for community globally from which Bitcoin has gradually expanded its impacts in philosophy aspect. To understand about it, I recommend you Bitcoin and the Dunbar Limit for reading.

Where you start depends on how technically proficient you are. You are still learning about Bitcoin and you should continue to do so. I can mine Bitcoin if I have the technical knowledge and the necessary equipment, but mining on an individual level is not easy in the current context. Combining the cost of mining with modern equipment and high electricity consumption, the price of Bitcoin will be expensive.
Applying technology to institutional mining may be fruitful for you.

Focusing on investing in Bitcoin on an individual level would be ideal for you. Bitcoin is a philosophy and a wise symbol through which you can build a financially independent economy. Deposit Bitcoin through discretionary income of any amount you earn and invest it in a long term to get a decent portfolio.

I advice you to focus on make money from Bitcoin and no need to thinks others. Bitcoin have its technology and have philosophy but you should know what is your reason involving in Bitcoin. You can learn the technology and the philosophy but your focus should be on making money.

No need to thinks about mining as that can be expensive for ordinary people. You can learning how to make money from Bitcoin, many things you can do.

I think it would be most accurate to say that bitcoin started as an idea, which developed through technology to become a global phenomenon that brings together millions of people from all over the world today.
For many users, bitcoin and crypto have become a way of life but also a way to achieve financial freedom.
Bitcoin is independent of any country or bank and in a way belongs to all the people who use it. For the first time in the history of mankind, we have something like this and we can say that we are part of a revolution.
For a better understanding of this topic, I suggest you study the white paper of the creator of BTC, Satoshi: https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-paper

Both your friends are saying the same thing without saying the same thing, don't let it confuse you, rather try to understand them both.

Bitcoin decentralisation is taking total control of your money, by yourself, and this is what you first friend is trying to say, while your second friend talked about freedom from banks too, which means they are talking about the same thing.

Bitcoin as a store of value and payment solution comes right after, for me, I can't say ablut other members here, the best utility of Bitcoin is giving people that total control without any thrid party right in between.

So OP,  which side are you understanding more here? Don't sweat it, every beginners must have a reason why they want to invest in Bitcoin, or else they will get bored super fast down the line, one has to like what Bitcoin offers or hate it.

Bitcoin is both of them. It is a technology that has the philosophy of decentralizing financial transactions to promote privacy and freedom. Learning about an area will greatly depend on your interest. I don't think you would invest time to learn the technical part of Bitcoin without understanding the philosophy behind the technology.

Those who usually spend time learning the technical part of Bitcoin are strong believers in the philosophy of the coin. So, I suggest studying Bitcoin holistically and see how far you would go.

Don't try to make things look hard for yourself. Much better use Bitcoin according to what you like to happen, because as what people said here people have different purpose on how they used Bitcoin.

But if you look at the real situation, we can really say that Bitcoin is both Philosopy and Technology. If you want to dig more technical information about Bitcoin better research on other venue or even asked help from AI so you can get a good guide fromwhat you are trying to research about Bitcoin.

You can use Bitcoin in both ways according to your needs. Bitcoin is advanced in both directions and users are using Bitcoin according to their needs.

It is not complicated. On the one hand, Bitcoin is a huge technological discovery that gives you complete freedom and considerable security over your money. It even frees you from the traditional banking system, centralization, and third-party surveillance. You should clarify your position as to why you are using Bitcoin. For advanced technology? Or for decentralization? But whatever the purpose, you are using Bitcoin.

so still learning about Bitcoin, I’m curious: should I focus more on the technical side first, or the philosophy behind it? Or maybe Bitcoin is really both at the same time? or perhaps something else entirely? what do you think
I would say both. I feel that you can’t really separate them if you want to understand Bitcoin properly.

From my own view, the philosophy is usually what attract people in first. That whole idea of freedom from banks, being in control of your own money. That part is really needed, especially with everything going on in different countries. So most of this philosophy factors is what makes people curious in the first place.

But then again, something that then keep people is the tech behind it. When you start seeing how well it’s built, like the mining system and all that, and how everything is structured and secured, you will begin to understand why it has lasted this long and why it is so hard to compete with. It is not just about hype, the design is still really solid and well plan. Sometimes it do say that the creator of Bitcoin is a real genius.

So i will not say pick one over the other. The philosophy attracts you, then the technology convinces you to stay. Both are what make Bitcoin what it is today.

True this is another smart angle… basically they coexist, they are different parts of the same thing.

You can use Bitcoin in both ways according to your needs. Bitcoin is advanced in both directions and users are using Bitcoin according to their needs.

This is very insightful and interesting thanks for your input… clarity is the rock of decisions which I believe I’ve made

From what majority of people has said I think it’s better I just focus on the technical instead of trying to complicate things for myself in such an educational level. But yes, as prt of education I’ll read more on it to understand more

You need to know, Bitcoin is a unique phenomenon that combines these two inseparable aspects, technology as a framework and philosophy as its main driver. I think both of your friends are right, but they see Bitcoin from a different perspective. I will try to explain in more detail to help you more easily understand the different frameworks such as the perspectives of your two friends.

Bitcoin uses Blockchain technology, which is a transaction recording system that is distributed across thousands of computers (nodes) around the world, rather than stored on a single bank server. While Mining is a cryptographic process that secures the network and validates transactions, ensuring there is no counterfeit money. This technology ensures security, transparency and anti-censorship properties without the need for intermediaries or third parties.

Bitcoin was created as a direct response to the traditional monetary system, Satoshi designed it to be unregulated by any central entity. Bitcoin is also for all humans, the reason I say that is because Bitcoin offers financial sovereignty or gives full control over your own assets (self-custody), its limited supply (only 21 million coins) also protects it from inflation caused by excessive money printing.

Try starting with the basic concept, then you can balance it. Without philosophy, Bitcoin is just another digital database or power-hungry spreadsheet. Without technology, the Bitcoin philosophy cannot be implemented safely or remain just an idea on paper. Blockchain technology, proof-of-work, and cryptography make this philosophy a reality without being subject to cheating or manipulation by any party.

So, in essence, Satoshi created Bitcoin so that everyone would have an option outside of the system controlled by certain parties, not to replace it, but to provide an alternative.
