Well, if they want to do this, they should start by letting all those their celebrity content creators that advertise those gambling platforms that they should contribute part of their earnings to the development of rehabilitation centers and treatment of gamblers with addiction problem. That's how I think they can do it because if they expect the social media owners to pay for that, it is going to be difficult but instead let those content creators do the contribution.
But I don't think all celebrity content creators or others who market gambling will want to donate part of their income and some may even fight against this fact. Even if this is true, it is better for the parliament to use its own money, meaning that it does not expect any donations from outside either from anyone but if someone donates money to help build a rehabilitation center, it is accepted. so if we have good intentions then just do it yourself, don't hope that someone else will help. They might not want to contribute any money for such a cause but if it's an order from the government, they will have no option but to donate or they will stop promoting those online casinos on their channels but if the government actually wants to help, they can do it on their own but I guess they have to also be getting enough taxes from the casino companies before they will agree to do it.

According to the article, Lawmakers in Indonesia are proposing that social media should financially contribute to gambling addiction treatment programs in the country. From what I understand, their reasoning for it is because social media helps circulate gambling content online.
Do you guys think Indonesia should require social media platforms to contribute to gambling addiction treatment programs?
Well, I don't think it's a bad idea but I wonder how they are going to go about it, because if we talk about or consider the claim that social media help circulate gambling platforms online, it's the truth, but on the other hand, I am also wondering, without social media, how are casinos going to reach their audiences, knowing fully well that this is a business that also pays taxes to the government, what infrastructure has or did the governments provide for the casinos to be able to reach their needed audience or customers so they can continue to make money so they be able to pay the required tax to the government? The citizens is the responsibility of the government to take care of, and if casinos in the country are paying tax, and social media in the country are also paying tax to the same government, then government should not try to shift their responsibility of looking after their citizens to social media, they can only direct social media platforms on how to go about advertising gambling contents to reduce the rate of gambling addiction in the country, not that the social media should contribute to gambling treatment, except this is what they mean by what they said.

It makes sense what you're saying that with an order from the government then most likely they won't be able to refuse it, and even if they refuse it maybe it will have a bad impact on their reputation. I myself, if it's for a good cause then I will help it whether it's in terms of funds or my own labor. I'm pretty sure with a good program like this there should be a lot of people who support it so indirectly a lot of people will help too because the goal is clearly to get rid of addiction.

there should be a lot of people who support it so indirectly a lot of people will help too because the goal is clearly to get rid of addiction. When the people already knows that if the government wanted to do it, they can do it on their own without asking social media influencers, so I believe that many people will not support, they can give several excuses that perhaps that are not the cause of the people's irresponsible behavior in gambling, that's why I was saying that unless it's an order from them, that's when you could see lots of people supporting.

Do you guys think Indonesia should require social media platforms to contribute to gambling addiction treatment programs?
I would say yes for platforms like Instagram and YouTube, but no for the creators. I don’t think creators should be blamed for the addiction. They promote casinos to earn money and make a living. If anyone is responsible, it should be the platforms. I don’t understand why casino ads are allowed on social media platforms. These days, many teenagers have access to social media, and this creates a bad influence on them. And don’t tell me that social media platforms can’t recognize gambling related promotional content. They can, just as they filter hate speech and pornographic content. So, I want to see what judgment the Indonesian judicial system gives.

Precisely because of what you say about the announcements, it would be enough reason to justify charging a part of that direct income to finance the aid programs. But content about gambling itself causes more visits too, which helps to monetize, indirectly, and that's where I have doubts about whether only the platform could be forced to pay, or also the most influential content creators (at least those above a certain threshold).

The initiative seeks to expand rehabilitation resources.
Indonesia.- Lawmakers in Indonesia are discussing a proposal that would require social media companies to contribute financially to gambling addiction treatment programmes. Members of the People’s Representative Council’s Commission III, including lawmaker Gus Abduh, say social media platforms play a role in the circulation of online gambling content and could therefore be included in a framework to support treatment infrastructure.
“Platforms should contribute to the development of rehabilitation centres,” Abduh said.
Officials say rehabilitation services remain limited relative to demand. In meantime, Indonesia continues to conduct investigations into influencers and digital channels associated with gambling advertising. Sounds pretty dumb to me and they're probably targeting the wrong places. Sure, you can go after false advertising and social media sites do take some responsibility there, but beyond that most gambling content should be allowed - because it is legal in the majority countries that created these sites. As long as it's labelled and not using any underhanded methods to promote sites then it is like targeting a search engine when it's not their responsibility. If you want to go after social media then the real problem is the addictive algorithms that they've engineered over the last couple decades to keep users as "engaged" as possible and go direct to the source - charge the gambling sites if you say they're doing wrong.

I think programs like this are mainly designed to create another way for businesses, in this case casinos, to make money.Measures like these usually lead to additional regulations, and those regulations can be manipulated through bribery, creating yet another opportunity for corruption. I doubt that all of the money collected would actually be used for its intended purpose.Instead, I think governments should focus on improving financial literacy through public awareness campaigns and education in schools. People shouldn't grow up with the illusion or false belief that gambling is a reliable way to make money. It should be understood as entertainment, not as a source of income.

Gambling is prohibited in our country, so I assure you that there is no state income from this sector, except only "tribute fees" to officials to smuggle out the casino industry. As far as I know, several advertising companies implement advertising content filtering according to geolocation regulations, but I know that there is no perfect system so there are still many gambling advertisements that pass the filter even on platforms for minors. You can imagine how ironic it is that cases of gambling addiction are increasing in countries where gambling is prohibited.

No, this kind of measure is always corrupt and a means to provide the officials a way to steal more money from the budget. Each country's budget is sufficiently large, the money is mostly being stolen -- as such any measure that involves paying more in taxes or obligations is wrong in most cases. If they really cared about the negative effects that these platforms have in the context of gambling, then they would focus on treating the root causes of the problem and not on the symptoms. That would mean a blanket ban of any and all advertising of gambling on those platforms including the inability for gambling entities to even have profiles on those pages. Furthermore, any kind of gambling-related mechanism would be abolished from all games and all interactions that are possible on the platform. That would be incomparably more effective than any kind of additional taxation towards addiction treatment programs, so my answer is a clear No.

The big problem here would be the execution and implementation. Should the government of Indonesia pass such law, I wonder how they would enforce this law on various social media platforms and the enforcement of penalties thereof.
Let's face it- social media is a vast world where controlling a sector is near impossible due to the loopholes of it. Perhaps what they can control are local social media platforms that they can enforce? If a giant social media platform like Facebook were required to pay a fee in order to control gambling addiction problems, then I guess they would most likely just remove access from that country.
In conclusion, I see the initiative and it is definitely for a good purpose. I just hope that the law would be very specific as to its execution because while the intent might be for the betterment of its citizens, its execution is another question given that it might be prejudicial than helpful as a whole.

I believe Indonesia is a country which has a huge Muslim majority, though. So it makes sense they would try to keep gambling out their society, as they try to follow the teachings of Koran. I believe the logic behind this move by the government of Indonesia is that, since they do not actually have regulated gambling in their country, they will try to force social media to pay more taxes due to gambling ads, in order to discourage those platforms from allowing casino advertising within Indonesia. Basically, it is like a indirect enforcement of their religious laws, since they have already banned casinos, then they will try their people not to even have the chance to get to them because of ads on Instagram, Facebook, and so on...

First and foremost social media doesn't Force anyone to gamble despite they contribute in spreading gambling information, it is the duty of people to chose to gamble or not. But however since the government has proposed that social media should financially support gambling addiction, by providing them with treatment center it is now left for social Media to do it or not. I doubt if social Media will do that because if they do, it will attract other countries to do thesame. I know this is a threat to this social media in Indonesia but trust me, social media will not do it, the highest Indonesia government can do is to ban gambling because they can not ban social media.

That is a good initiative since social media has been constantly showing ads about gaming these days. If the social media influencers have earned thousands of dollars every payout, then the social media platform itself could be earning way more than those influencers. Though it is not their responsibility to combat gambling addiction, it would be nice to see them contribute financially as well, since they encouraged people to gamble through allowing these ads on their platform. If something like this were to happen, I hope it will be implemented globally, not just in a single country or state, as gambling addiction is all around the globe.

It should be like that, so when the government has a plan for something that is clearly directed at the public good then they do not have to wait for support from anyone, because this support in my opinion will arise by itself as long as the government carries out the plan well and with the results that have been seen by the community then indirectly I think the community will provide support. Apart from that, it is the obligation of the government itself to provide the best for its people.

Yes, that's a good idea. Do social media help circulate gambling content online? Sure. Not all of them, but a big part fore sure. Do I think it's a bad thing? No. We need gambling as a cure from fatigue and all consequential bad things that happen to to us if we don't rest. But although only 10% of gamblers suffer from gambling addiction, society shouldn't ignore it. There are many effective treatment programs for gambling addiction, and social media should help promote them.

What are Indonesia lawmakers planning to do? Because what I can see now is that they may want to ban social media from displaying gambling add or something that has to do with gambling ads.
Do they want to propose social media educational contents against gambling? We can not understand until we see how they want to use social media for gambling addiction treatment.
Yeah I think that is where they’re driving to at the point.. Because it makes no sense to create a law were by social media be it influencers or ad promotion contributes to gambling treatment. When the promotion of its could just be stopped completely.. I feel it’s just a step in achieving what they want to achieve in the first place..

Is it only gambling that is advertised on social media? So why is the Indonesian government particularly concerned about gambling? I think this is just a strategy to cripple certain casinos because if truly the government wanted to conduct any form of rehabilitation they would have used their own money and not seek for donations from anyone. My concern is why they are so concerned about gamblers? Why not allow people to do what makes them happy? This is the 21st century every adult have the right to do what makes them happy, there are other addictions like drug addiction etc, why haven’t the government completely rehabilitate those that are involved.
You need to understand that it's actually affecting their economy, if you look at the stats then you would know, there are countries out there that even though gambling is legal their citizens are allowed much of it, instead tourists are the one's who gamble more there, it's a strategy to save their citizens from gambling addiction while still getting all the tax money they can get from casinos, Indonesia would be better off adopting a similar strategy rather than going all out against gambling.

Big social media can help indeed. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and many more can do their own campaign to limit gambling for users! A warning indeed to see the point of gambling. I get that they can get ads from these gambling sites and literally earns from them but these setes should also take a look on the harmful side of gambling and what it can bring users into worse aspect of life to certain individual. Addiction is a serious problem and social media can play a huge role.
