So, when things are valuable, they can be both, but when they lose their value for some reason, they can be neither.

Exactly. Value is trust made tangible. The medium is just the vessel.

In essence, Bitcoin is already a global digital currency. Because Satoshi created it intending to become a p2p currency, not a store of value or a speculative asset.

Price volatility can also be considered a major barrier to the use of Bitcoin as a method of payment. But in my opinion, that is not the real reason. The real reason lies within ourselves, most of us do not want to use it for that purpose. Government ban, price fluctuation, high fee or slow speed...these are all just excuses.
Bitcoin was created for a borderless transaction blockchain, and till now everyone can use it like. There is only legal barrier created by governments in order to minimize access of their citizens to Bitcoin blockchain and make their citizens fearful about possible legal issues when using bitcoin for money transactions nationwide and worldwide.

It's legal and psychological challenge for many companies and individuals but it's not enough to prevent all people using bitcoins and certainly not enough to kill bitcoin.

Governments are also one of the barriers preventing the use of Bitcoin as a method of payment. However, I still believe that we ourselves are the biggest obstacle. Because many stores and businesses still accept Bitcoin today. Therefore, it is actually not difficult if people really want to experience or use Bitcoin as a means of payment.

Or El Salvador is a clear example showing that even when Bitcoin is accepted as legal tender. People there still do not want to use it as a payment method to replace fiat or traditional payment method.

El Salvador proved it. Legal tender status didn't change behavior. People still defaulted to dollars. Bitcoin as payment requires a mental shift that regulation can't force and freedom can't guarantee. The technology is ready. The psychology isn't.

Bitcoin is definitely used as store of value and also a means of exchange,  but I think it's more of store of value than means of exchange. Most people use bitcoin for investment,  that's why they buy and hold for a long time to make profit. Bitcoin is very good as a digital asset and I believe people are taking advantage of it. Bitcoin has not also been fully accepted as digital currency,  because it's not accepted in by everyone and I really don't think it will completely become a means of exchange in the future.

Bitcoin is very good as a long-term asset, Bitcoin has already proven itself very well, and therefore it is a great way to hold Bitcoin for the future. Basically, due to the daily volatility of Bitcoin, its use in daily purchases is still limited, but in many countries, stores in different places are using Bitcoin as their payment system, that is, Bitcoin is still a good means of transaction, but it is in a relatively limited range, but hopefully Bitcoin will become an important medium for all types of transactions in most countries in the future.
Because different countries are taking Bitcoin very seriously, the United States of America, Russia, Canada and many others are taking Bitcoin seriously and over time it will spread to the whole world. And over time, Bitcoin will become much more influential, and yes, I also think that Bitcoin will become a complete means of exchange in the future.

I think Bitcoin can serve both purposes, but right now it makes more sense to see it as a long-term store of value rather than a currency for everyday purchases.

The comparison with gold isn't unreasonable. Bitcoin has a maximum supply of 21 million coins, and no central bank can simply decide to increase that limit. However, I wouldn't say it has all the advantages of gold either, mainly because its price is still extremely volatile.

As a payment method, Bitcoin definitely has its uses, especially for international transfers. The problem is that transaction fees and confirmation times can make smaller payments impractical, although solutions like the Lightning Network are helping address those limitations.

For me, the interesting part is the difference between what Bitcoin was originally designed to do and how people actually use it today. It started as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, but many people now treat it primarily as an asset to hold for the long term.

That said, I think Bitcoin still needs to demonstrate greater stability across different economic cycles before we can confidently call it an established store of value.

Do you guys think the Lightning Network could eventually make Bitcoin more practical for everyday payments, or will its future be mainly as a reserve asset?  Huh Huh

Even though it is an abstract concept, i prefer to think of bitcoin as digital gold; in reality, it is more of a digital currency—albeit one not yet recognized as such by many countries. I am looking forward to its adoption expanding, following the Swiss model where you can pay for everything in bitcoin.

Is Bitcoin a store of value or medium of exchange? Or can it be both? I always thought Bitcoin made more sense as digital gold since it has all the benefits of gold yet none of the defects of gold.
The volatility of Bitcoin makes me feel like it doesn't make sense as a form of digital currency. I'm open to hear why Bitcoin makes more sense as a digital form of currency.
Why doesn’t it make sense for pricing to depend on the laws of supply and demand? Because of its volatility—which makes me feel that Bitcoin is a currency unlike any other—combined with the fact that it operates 24/7 without any holidays that would cause the market to close.
As a hedge, I think it’s appropriate to refer to Bitcoin as “digital gold”—and even when I compare it to physical gold, Bitcoin has outperformed physical gold.

Bitcoin now plays alot of roles and has several use cases which is dependent on what the holder chooses to do with it and I wouldn't have to start arguing what use case is best and if you think bitcoin to you should be regarded as a digital gold because if its feature to store value then it's also fine but that doesn't mean it can't also serve as a digital currency since it is and can also be used as a legal tender and a means of purchasing power, so whatever way anyone wants to address it is fine to me.

IMO, in the beginning, Bitcoin was a form of digital currency, created to fight the bad monetary system that had been around for years. But the volatility of this coin indirectly gave people a chance to make money from capital gains. People tend to hold it and treat it as an investment instrument rather than using it for payments. And since then, the idea of Bitcoin as a digital currency has died, replaced by a new narrative, Bitcoin as a store of value.

If you read the Bitcoin whitepaper https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf, it positions Bitcoin as a digital currency.

What is needed is an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust, allowing any two willing parties to transact directly with each other without the need for a trusted third party.

However, in the Incentive section, it clearly states the analogy of Bitcoin as digital gold.

The steady addition of a constant of amount of new coins is analogous to gold miners expending resources to add gold to circulation. In our case, it is CPU time and electricity that is expended.

The good news is that Bitcoin is currently being traded as a medium of exchange in many countries. The government is creating obstacles, this is also a reality because if the government finds out, you may be put under surveillance at that time. El Salvador is an example before us, where Bitcoin has been accepted as legal tender and Bitcoin is being used freely in transactions. Children are being taught Bitcoin there.

Despite the government restrictions, Bitcoin is known worldwide and people are holding Bitcoin and they are transacting and the use of Bitcoin is increasing gradually. This has been possible due to the dedicated efforts of individuals. It has now become difficult for the government to control because most people want financial freedom.

You may have missed this, but Bitcoin hasn't been legal tender in El Salvador since early 2025. What's more telling is that after 4 years, usage as actual currency is sitting at a record low, with less than 10% of the population using it.

Bitcoin is known worldwide now, but most people still see it as an investment, not something they use for everyday payments. And whether you admit it or not, governments are tightening their grip on Bitcoin, not losing control of it as you claim.

Literally, it is how you use Bitcoin. I consider Bitcoin a store of value because I am a long term investor and it may surpass gold in the future. I am not just saying this for the sake of saying it, there are many arguments in favor of it, such as gold being a metal that is globally accepted and valuable, similarly Bitcoin is accepted and its demand will more increase in the future. Since the supply of Bitcoin is limited, the price will likely increase much more than gold. Gold is a physical asset and requires additional money to strengthen security measures in transportation and maintenance. The amount of additional money you spend on holding and maintaining Bitcoin is very limited and almost non-existent. Investors are leaning towards Bitcoin compared to investing in gold.
