Honestly, with how fast the naira keeps losing value, I understand why many Nigerians are turning to Bitcoin just to protect their savings... leaving money in the bank sometimes feels like watching it slowly disappear

But at the same time, Bitcoin isn’t exactly “safe” too because of the price swings and mistakes people make with self custody... One wrong move and funds are gone.

So sometimes I wonder… are we choosing Bitcoin because it’s truly the better option, or just because every other option looks worse?
Would you actually advise the average Nigerian to save in Bitcoin today? Or is it still too risky?

If you do not have in mind to spend your bitcoin, just hodl it and you will later be convinced that bitcoin is by far better than the naira, do not let the volatility in the price of bitcoin to deceive you.

Just hodl and be having fun on the hodl thread
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5571809.0

Naira is not falling like before but it will be a great mistake if you save your money there instead of hodling bitcoin that can get to all time high.

Hodl bitcoin spend naira

Well you need to understand the use of Bitcoin as a store of value, then you would probably know why people are choosing Bitcoin. Inflation affects the naira and fiat so badly that it gets worse and worse overtime whereas with Bitcoin the rates gets even better despite the fact that their is volatility in the price movement, I mean there is a reason the message of keeping Bitcoin for long term purpose is spread across because Bitcoin growth is not something that happens with a short while but if you are okay with the long term storage then trust it's a 100x better than having your money kept in fiat.

Also take note that its always advisable to go with your discretionary income so that you won't get affected when the market dips in price and you can continue with your portfolio for long term plans and in the end the results will speak for itself.

Kindly track jayjuangee and his teachings and your opinion and view will be more open to as why Bitcoin is always better than the fiat.

It is not any more risky then keeping it in fiat, though I hsve a question,  how long are you planning to save for exactly? If you are saving for just a short period of time, say a few months then better to just keep in fiat because bitcoin is quite volatile as an asset and saving in it for s short term might be counterproductive, but if you are planning on locking some of your funds away for s really long time then bitcoin becomes far better than keeping it in fiat, plus there is a very high likelihood that you will end up turning a profit in the end so you won't just have been able to save value you would have also been able to generate extra income from your savings in bitcoin,  a classic two birds one stone situation.

Oh well I'll be making almost same reply today in most of my replies.

There is no safe heaven. If you don't take risk, you will not be able to make it big. With Bitcoin you have freedom, this freedom which you won't get saving your money in banks.

Banks are not your friend they use your money to invest without giving you any returns. putting money in Bitcoin offers you the chances to make profits from your own money. Now the bank does not have the chance to cheat you.

It all comes with risk, but we don't want to allow the idea of risk to stop oneself. Bitcoin is volatile, yes. But that volatility is what makes it the best option to invest in.

Inflation will just keep eating from someone’s pocket if they save in Naira and eh dey very clear to us, if pesin save like N100k fir bank for 2023 and let’s say him wan use am now.. no be small lose him lose for him money o.

But as for bitcoin, it serves as a hedge against inflation, pesin wey invest that same 100k for 2023 inside Bitcoin..by now him money go even increase instead of decreasing even if the increment isn’t much but at least him money no go lose value like that if pesin wey keep am for bank since 2023.

But at the same time, Bitcoin isn’t exactly “safe” too because of the price swings and mistakes people make with self custody... One wrong move and funds are gone.

Nothing is “exactly safe” in this world, anything can happen at any given time..expected or unexpected. Actually the price swings is not even the thing that make bitcoin not exactly safe, if you check the price for “Zoomed out” chart, you go see say e dey always increase no matter how much eh crash…that’s how it is since when dem create am.

Are people actually saving or investing in Bitcoin?. Imo, saving might not just be the word, especially when the money we're talking about is something that you can use at any point. AFAIK, savings have to do with low risk. If the idea is to save, then price swing/volatility might just be a problem, especially in cases where you choose to fall back to your savings. That doesn't make Bitcoin unsafe... What you intend to do and how you intend to do it, is just the problem.

And same thing goes with self custody, though I'm a bit surprised that we're still having this conversation of the risk that comes with self custody in 2026. Fine, I agree that self custody poses it's own risk, but it's more human error, and it can be avoided with extra caution. It's not really a big deal if you know what you're doing.

Here is a tool I came across.
You can give it a try. It has a very good way of providing answers to sceptical questions like this very one.

How to use it?
Open the research tool and ask your question or post a claim. The AI will generate a fact-based response in seconds. You can change tone between direct, balanced, and soft, and even adapt responses to social media platforms like X, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

What i see people do now is invest their money in Bitcoin, I personally don't see it as savings.

I'm of the opinion that we rather invest than plan to save in Bitcoin, Bitcoin isn't stable in price, with an investing mindset, the plan is to have Bitcoin go through dumbs and pump, to the longest which one is satisfied of the profits.

The motive behind investing is to preserve its value and still make returns, while saving is to keep the value the same, whereas the market tends to be a lot volatile, and may not get the specified amount due to Bitcoin losing value at the time.

I will not recommend you any risky strategy. You decide for yourself which one is easier for you.

The Naira has been depreciating over the years and this pace is likely to increase in the future as there is no effective government action to control inflation. Use a reliable and non custodial wallet to store your Bitcoins and keep your private key and seed phrase in multiple places to keep your assets safe.

It is always better to use a non custodial wallet to keep your Bitcoin holdings safe without any third party involvement.

Yes, I would recommend Bitcoin accumulation. It is definitely safer to have a continuous Bitcoin accumulation strategy and long term as per your financial capacity through discretionary income than risky strategies (trading).

As a newbie, it is justified why you should ask this question as a Nigerian. Probably you have forgotten then era of bank collapse that killed many people who had money in those banks, like Savanah bank that almost killed one of my uncle. Such collapses does not happen with Bitcoin saved in private wallets because you control your private keys and secret phrases. With Bitcoin, no one charges you for account maintenance, service charge, sms and email charges, and other bogus charges that happens with saving money in the bank. You can therefore, see that Bitcoin is a safe and reliable means of saving for Nigerians and it is recommended that we that have the privilege of learning about Bitcoin must take it seriously.

Due to inflation, on the one hand, local currencies are gradually losing their value, on the other hand, the value of the US dollar is increasing. That is, those who deposited local currency in the bank five years ago have their money like that, but they have suffered financial losses due to the depreciation of the currency in the past few years, but those who were aware of this issue in advance and who have already purchased Bitcoin instead of keeping money in the bank have now benefited because the price of Bitcoin is now in a much better position than before. At the same time, there is no possibility of inflation like this in the case of Bitcoin. Nigerians, especially those who know about Bitcoin, I think they will never consider it safe to keep money in the bank, but they will consider it safer to convert their money and buy Bitcoin with it. But yes, I am not talking about converting all the money into Bitcoin, but some money should be kept in the bank for sudden needs, but not all the money should be kept in the bank.

Also take note that its always advisable to go with your discretionary income so that you won't get affected when the market dips in price and you can continue with your portfolio for long term plans and in the end the results will speak for itself.
For those who are looking to start a new investment or who think that they will consistently invest in Bitcoin with a portion of their income, then the right decision for them would be to maintain the continuity of investment with discretionary income. Because when an investor starts investing with discretionary income and tries to invest consistently with that money, there will be no financial obstacles in their investment because they are investing with discretionary income.

Bitcoin is really a safe place when it comes to saving of money, that is why more Nigerians are looking the way of Bitcoin because it has shown to  have protected Nigerians against the bitting and harsh effects that inflation is costing Nigerians. Volatility has not stopped Bitcoin because in the mist of this so called volatility that people who may not be too informed about Bitcoin, Bitcoin has been able to work in such a way that it adds value to your money protecting it from losing value in the market.

So sometimes I wonder… are we choosing Bitcoin because it’s truly the better option, or just because every other option looks worse?
for me the one and only reason why people chose bitcoin over other assets is because it is the best and most  profitable asset for long time value, and it saves you fiat from inflation. another most important part is that it gives you privacy and having total control of you fund which makes it difficult for bank to have access to it.

Would you actually advise the average Nigerian to save in Bitcoin today? Or is it still too risky?
of course i will advice as many as possible to invest in bitcoin because it is very important they invest in it, weather for retirement or an asset for inheritance by younger generation. although bitcoin is risky but it worth the risk because it has never failed in the history of cryptocurrency.

Saving in bitcoin should be considered an investment because bitcoin is not a stable asset but rather an asset that rises and declines on hearing the next big news. The naira is a bit more stable and may have slight variations in economic standards but bitcoin is different.

Bitcoin is more complicated and requires the basic understanding before making it a savings account. One with an unstable income should not consider bitcoin a savings platform because of it's volatility,  it should be considered more of an investment.

Naira is gaining value now, in fact, one litre of fuel is now more than $1 in Nigeria, so we can say that the Nigerian naira is performing well lately, but the problem is when we can't sustain the current gain in the naira value.

Saving in both naira and bitcoin is not a good idea for me, but investing in bitcoin is a far better idea and when doing that you should have a long-term goal in mind.

If person fit hold bitcoin for like 5 years to come, e go make sense well, because by that time, the gain go done show wella and you fit use the money achieve better or you can keep holding your capital after you may have taken profits.

So sometimes I wonder… are we choosing Bitcoin because it’s truly the better option, or just because every other option looks worse?
Would you actually advise the average Nigerian to save in Bitcoin today? Or is it still too risky?

As an average Nigerian, if you value privacy and decentralisation, I’ll advise that you opt in for bitcoin and use it and a means of saving instead in relying on banks. With bitcoin, no third party interference to your money and you get to do what you want at anytime with your money unlike some restrictions you can get to your money when you’re saving in banks.

If you’re opting in for bitcoin investment, it is better you value privacy and security of your funds over everything because that’s what will give you the chance and freedom you’re looking for that you can’t get with banks. Everything is risky, even saving in banks are risky, so it is better you take the right step and face that risk yourself, you’ll come out better from it and limit the fear henceforth.

As things even take be now, e go better make person invest fully in bitcoin, no be for payment and savings for our day to day activities but for long term investment of it which we need to make sure say we keep up to am and take full advantage of the opportunity wey e dey come with. Everything dey risky, but with bitcoin investment, you dey at peace of less risk.
