New User Guide: How do I post images on the forum?
Powered by TalkImg

Translations: Pidgin (Nigeria)

First of all, welcome to the Bitcointalk forum. Here you will find an amazing community that will help you learn more about the world of Bitcoin and more. If they come to announce a service linked to Bitcoin, it will be greatly appreciated; we all like new, reliable services, as this is the only way for Bitcoin to continue growing.

But whether you're a Bitcoin enthusiast or a service promoter, something you need to know before you start exploring the forum is: how to post an image on the forum.
I developed this guide hoping it will be useful for you, the new user.

How do images work on the forum?  .:
BitcoinTalk does not have an image upload system, nor does it directly host images. Therefore, in order to host an image, you need to use an external image hosting service. In addition, the forum has some specific rules regarding images, which you should take into consideration:
  • It only accepts images in the following formats: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF
  • It cannot have more than 2.5MB of space

It should also be mentioned that the forum uses an image proxy, ensuring that all images viewed by forum users pass through this proxy. This allows users' web identities to remain protected when using these external hosting services. This fact causes some image hosting services to block this proxy due to excessive requests. Therefore, it's important to choose an image hosting service that doesn't create this type of barrier, such as TalkImg.

When can I post an image?  .:
There is another very important rule on the forum: you can only post an image if you are a Junior member.

This means that even if you post a link to an image in the forum, it won't become visible until it reaches that level. I won't go into detail in this guide about how to level up, but you can consult the following topics for more information:
FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit
Merit & new rank requirements

Depending on your activity/participation in the forum, you can reach the Junior level within 6-7 weeks. However, if you don't want to wait (for example, if your goal is to promote a service), you can obtain a Copper subscription. By paying a one-time fee, these restrictions will be lifted. Please note that this is not mandatory! You only need to do this if you want to anticipate the possibility of adding images. Most forum users prefer to wait until they can add images.

How do I add an image to a topic/post?  .:
As mentioned before, BitcoinTalk does not have a button to upload images, nor is it enough to simply drag and drop the image into the topic/post creation area. The forum posts are based on written text and BBCode code (you can learn more about that here).

This means you have to write in the text of your post a code and the link to the image that was provided by the image hosting service. You need to write the [img] tag and inside that tag put the image link. See the following example:

How it is written: [img]https://www.talkimg.com/images/2026/05/09/UJfwVG.png[/img]
As seen:

How do image hosting systems work?  .:
Basically, what you need is a link to an image. However, for use in a forum, it's recommended to use an image hosting service instead of copying links directly from other websites. Copying links from other websites may violate some of that site's rules, and the image could easily be blocked by that website from being displayed on the forum.

Therefore, there are services that allow a person to upload images and receive a link, which they can then use here on the forum. Almost all of these types of services work in the same way, and are generally simple to use. Follow these steps if you use TalkImg (it's free):

1. Go to www.talkimg.com and click "Start Upload" or simply drag the image onto the page.

2. After selecting the image, a confirmation page will appear; simply click "Upload" (note that the image must comply with the rules mentioned above).

3. The upload will be completed, and when finished, a link/code will appear that you should copy.

4. Paste the link/code into the post you are writing:

 Conclusion  .:
For those unfamiliar with the forum ecosystem, all of this may seem very complex. But I believe it's simpler and more practical than it appears at first glance. As you continue to explore the forum and participate, you'll see that everything becomes almost automatic.

I hope this guide has helped you understand how forum images work. Here are two more topics that may be useful when posting images on the forum:
Guideline on posting images (with size adjustments), hyperlinks
Guide: Best practices for using images on the forum/web

OP Note: Throughout this guide, I will suggest the TalkImg service for uploading images, but the user is free to choose their preferred image hosting service. The TalkImg service was created with the forum in mind; if you want to know more, visit the official thread.

This is actually a nice guide, well done @OP and I hope new users find it very helpful when trying to upload images on the forum.

Yesterday this was actually the kind of guide I was looking for to give the OP of a thread asking about this same issue and I’m sure that was what inspired you to crate this post; well I couldn’t find any so I just link the official announcement thread to the OP but it’s really helpful and good since you’ve created the guide..

How about how to adjust the image height and width? Or just adjusting the height? It would be good if that can also be included on this topic to make it a complete guide for newbies.

All the image uploading sites that I am using, including talkimg, I prefer to readjust the images height as they appears too big.

It's a good topic. I think it could be pinned, since some beginners sometimes just ask a question without trying to use the search, and later, having created a topic and received several merits from very "trusting and kind" users to embody their desire to post a picture, they forget about closing the topic. Thus, we regularly see the same questions that could be decreased if they read a full-fledged topic.

Thank you OP. Great job. This will be very useful for newbies. I still get posts from newbies sometimes asking "How to upload images on BitcoinTalk Forum" and some of these newbies have the misconception that BitcoinTalk Forum has a button option to upload images like Social Media X. I will definitely share this important thread of yours with them to clear up this misconception.

I want to believe with this new guide to newbies, there should be less question on how do I post image on the forum or any further inquiry they may want to make regarding posting image on the forum as well as the rank required, this is well explanatory and I appreciate the fact that there are images as well indicating the procedures and this make it more explanatory for any newbie who is ready to learn, they can quickly grab on the idea, it will be better as suggested if this is pinned on the beginners and help section for new users.

How about explaining to the Newbies a scenario where the image link broke, what causes it, how to fix it, and the best image hosting site to use as a Bitcointalk member?

This guide is simply the best image posting guide. I think the previous guide is not as comprehensive as this one, which is why I am trying my best to contribute to it. In the meantime, thank you, Joker_josue.

In the post conclusion, another topic is mentioned that provides more guidance on this subject.

Throughout the post, the TalkImg service is mentioned, a recommended service created with Bitcointalk in mind.

Very useful and well written guide, congratulations once again for your work, joker_josue.

If that's okay with you, I would like to propose in the AoBT its translation, and post in on the beginners & help sub-boards of the local boards.

This thread will be very helpful to many newbies that don't know how to go about this, uploading images when they want to, because I faced this challenge as a newbie, and that took me some time to start uploading images as I didn't come across such a thread like this then, so I couldn't explain most of the things I wanted to discuss in my threads as I wanted as I didn't figure out that early.

This thread will also be helpful to newbies to know when they're eligible to start posting images too, because for you to use this feature, you must have attained the rank of a newbie, thereby limiting many questions that will arise in the future regarding guidelines on how they should upload images. Good job. 👍

OP Note: Throughout this guide, I will suggest the TalkImg service for uploading images, but the user is free to choose their preferred image hosting service. The TalkImg service was created with the forum in mind; if you want to know more, visit the official thread.
Talkimg is a good website but there are alternatives.

Image uploading websites/ scripts for Bitcointalk users. Other websites are collected in my thread but perhaps I don't know about all available image hosting, uploading sites.

Welcome your thread to [Mega resources for newbies] Check here, find most of your need, before asking.

This is good post specially for the newcomers to know how to post image on Bitcointalk.org. I will suggest that such posts must be pinned at the top, so newcomers can read them straight away. The site talkimg was created after there were problems encountered with uploading images through the site imgur.com. joker_josue has done the hard work of creating the talkimg site that is exclusively for uploading images on this forum. We haven't faced any issue in uploading images since this site is launched.

There is another very important rule on the forum: you can only post an image if you are a Junior member.

While you explain the details, I don't quite like the literate meaning of such a sentence. Even Newbie ranked users can and should post an image in [img]...[/img] BBcode tags, if they want and if the picture aids their post, regardless if the picture is only visible as a link while they haven't reached Jr. Member rank.

Once they reach a sufficient rank, currently simply the next after Newbie, their pictures become visible for all (you explained it well enough). Newbies should not restrain themselves from posting pictures just because their pictures aren't immediately fully visible.

If most newbies make use of the search options on the forum, we won't be having somany repeated questions on same topic that have already been treated long ago. Even without this thread being pinned, if a newbie or a member that doesn't know how to post image on the forum tries to at least search things out, it will be easy and more convenient seeing other threads that are even more detailed on how to upload images on normal just Talking platform but on all platforms. But then, post like this stipo reminds forum members how to use the available services that exist on the forum and encourage them to make a more constructive and organised post.

Complete guides for newbies to upload an image that we can use as a reference when someone asks this question. Newbies are really lazy to search on the forum regarding their concern; as a result, even for small things, they create a thread with questions. Good to see you blogged the part about rank requirements for uploading an image; it's also important for uploading an image.

However, thanks for the effort for creating those guidelines. But as I said above, previously guidelines have been created, but most newbies don't bother to read them. Your thread describes clearly everything; reading this would be enough to know about uploading an image. Keep up your good works.

The thread is a very good guide and it's good contribution from OP, but like you said, newbies are mostly lazy and don't mind reading and learning. However it's not reason to compose good guides for forum community, as such resources are truly helpful for newbies who are ready to search, read and learn.

Newbies who can do that are actually future of the forum, and they need help from senior members in this forum for making newbies' very first experience more comfortable and speed up their learning progress too.

The forum SMF User Help with References to SMF Bulletin Board Code has basic guide for inserting images with credits to joker_josue too.

TalkImg.com is unaffiliated with bitcointalk.org, but was created by joker_josue to work especially well here.
