IMF warns that AI making Cyberattacks Cheaper, Faster and more Dangerous

While Artificial Intelligence is helping mankind in many ways to improve human life, the adversaries are busy in finding negative uses of this new technology. IMF has warned that due to AI the cost and time required to find and exploit software vulnerabilities has significantly gone down and that is great threat for financial institutes. IMF also stressed that core pillar of cyber security must to develop resilience not just preventive measures. Since financial institutes are relying on few cloud service providers and payment networks, that means attackers have a single point to focus on.

"Extreme cyber-incident losses could trigger funding strains, raise solvency concerns, and disrupt broader markets," the IMF said.

AI has threats not only limited to individuals but for state owned institutes also.

I hope that, just as there will be bad actors who try to take advantage of the power that this new technology offers to do evil, there will also be activists and committed individuals who will contribute to mitigate that damage. Whether we are in favour or detractor of AI, what is clear is that times of great uncertainty are coming, and whoever denies it must be a genius or a madman.

 It's kind of confusing. I thought this is the same AI that helps companies and businesses achieve more at a lower cost so why advising that people mind the rate at which it is being used. It's true that the introduction and use of AI has its downsides but is there any other mean that one will not encounter cyber attacks.
 The world is evolving constantly to fit the demands of an ever changing world and those companies who have employed the use of AI in their day to day activities must know it comes with a risk and should increase their online security to avoid these attacks.

There is no talk that we should return to times when there was no computers. But knowing about risks is very important. Previously to make cyber attacks you had to be very tech advanced. Now even average Joe without that much knowledge can make cyberattacks with help of AI. Yes, AI can do lot of useful things, but making harmful things also become much easier with it.

Assuming that you haven't heard about Anthropic, you likely haven't heard about "Claude Mythos" either, and you might want to peek on this article from last month.

LLMs aren't good for most things, but it's very good for this kind of mass testing for different variables that would take for ever to code. Claude Mythos for example can find new 0day exploits and you can pretty much kill a company with those when they are severe enough.

Honestly technology is not a problem by itself but how it being choose by people to use it that matters. Ai does good according to you, it can help businesses, education, security but the thing here are the scammers because they will still same tools for bad things and that's the normal pattern that follows every new tech from phone to the internet. The solution here is not to be afraid of Ai but to makes improvement when it comes to awareness and build up better protection as the tech grows

This is true, we have seen IMF warned many African and Asian countries, but the warnings are only for the benefit of United States. Another one was the warning about El Salvador bitcoin legal tender. After several warnings, they waited for El Salvador to need their help, but they told the country to first ditch bitcoin as a legal tender. A country that did not compulsory bitcoin as a legal tender but also let United States dollar to remain their legal tender also. But these case is different from those ones. I do not see anything that IMF wants to benefit from this, but just that the warning is not new.

I 100% agree that AI has made cyberattacks easier and faster than before. somebody that normally needed serious hacking knowledge can now use AI tools to create fake emails, fake voices, cloned videos, or even malicious codes within minutes. A very good example is social engineering attacks tactics, Like nowadays scammers use AI to impersonate bank workers, company staff or even family members to trick people into revealing passwords, OTP codes or sensitive information. We have already seen cases where fake AI voice calls were used to scam companies into sending money to criminals. Many phishing messages and fake investment platforms are now looking more convincing because of AI. IMF is clearly right that companies and financial institutions should not only focus on prevention, but also on resilience and quick recovery when attacks happen. Because with AI involved now, cybercrime is becoming cheaper, smarter and more dangerous globally.

AI can be used both by people who are doing constructive work as well as people who are doing negative work. There are lot of AI tools available online that can assist you in almost everything you want. The bad actors work is also getting easy because of AI tools and there is need to upgrade our defensive strategies accordingly. If we just ignore the warnings and think that AI can't help hackers or scammers then we might end up bearing big loses.

The advanced AI being too sophisticated to penetrate access to other devices and websites shouldn't be the case here, online hacking and cyber attacks has been happening long even before the aggressive model of AI for cyber attacking bots today's was made.
The fact is that there's not going to be remedy to end online attacks because no matter how the device maybe protected from the factory, online hackers will always penetrate their targets through the launch of malicious softwares focusing on phishing just to victimize vulnerables.
Be best clue to stay safe will still require users to be careful with their devices and privacies via the online scamming schemes so as to avoid them as much possible.
