Honestly,,, I looked up now all these other hokceys and had no idea these things existed. In my country it is just hockey, and it is field, and one of the most brutal injury stories of broken legs and broken testicles 

I guess I can understand ice hockey is more popular these days I just saw there is even a national team but somehow I never heard of them til now,,, also I did find out they started recently ice hockey in some of the rich parts of Africa (South Africa) and in northern parts.

It might be crucial win for Latvia because I consider both these teams as direct competitors for 4th place. But when you see how USA is performing, they also might have difficulties. Today they were destroyed by Finland 6:2.
Some good games later today - Switzerland - Germany and Sweden - Czechia.

Finland is looking great this year. Impressive win against USA. Now they are first in group and have only 1 difficult game left in group stage. High chances they will end first and will get Sweden or Norway as next opponent. For some reason USA performance isnt good this year (they are last year champions + current Olympic champions). They might end group stage last to qualify. It is also strange to see Germany on the last place in group.

I think,,, but I have no clue it is just what I think, in the old days when most of Asian countries was under colonial rule, these sports all became popular such as football and 'field' hockey, and cricket.

I think the easier it is to play without equipment, or if the equipment was cheap and easy to make, the more people played it. Hence football the most popular you just need a ball.

Then it evolved and you could play special equipment like for ice hockey and american football,,, but the ice never came to us so we only know about it because of Hollywood   We laugh a lot when the movies portray American football and Ice Hockey as brutal sports but these guys would not survive playing real rugby and real hockey where there is no protection for breaking legs and ball hitting your... balls  

But enough about hockey history I am going to try and watch one or two games now so I pray for ONE game playing when I am not in Zombieland

Sounds that ice hockey is something new for Asia, but it wont. I am sure if we google, we will find many ice hockey leagues in Asia, or in countries where we thought ice hockey isnt popular or people even dont know what it is. Everyone play it, except some countries cant make it to top league and have to play in 1st-3rd divisions.

Today, games in group B isnt exciting at all. Games in group A will be were most challenge is. USA vs Germany probably is most interesting May 20. Current champ (that performs bad this year) vs team who surprises and improves every year.

I wasn't able to watch early games and was amazed to see Swizterland 9:0 against neighbours from Austria. I mean it's good team that have decent chances to reach 1/4 final. You would expect to see such result against Hungary or Great Britain.
USA played their best game so far IMO, but still wasn't enough to get good result. Yeah, they won after shootout, but I'm sure they counted on win in regular time.

Yeap, winning in overtime or shootout sucks if only it is not a game for medal or playoff Because instead of getting 3 points, you get 1 for tie in regular time and 1 for winning, and your opponent get one 1 point also. Kinda of victory but still might no have enough point in the end to advance to next stage.

Btw, what point system do you prefer better? Like it is now, when you get 1+1 point if you win in overtime or shootouts and opponent get 1 point vs old system when you get 3+1 for winning in overtime or shootout, but opponent get zero. Now you get less points. Previously you can risk and tie game, to get more points if you win in overtime/shootouts.

It is really hard to understand and explain, but it Canada nearly lost points to Norway yesterday or so to say it was a hard win for Canada. Only managed to win in overtime. Norway has always been below 10th place in overall ranking. Regular time has ended with 5-5. Can you name many teams that managed to score 5 goals against Canada? Norway were even first to score. Almost whole game Canada was a catching team, and if they havent scored 1min before game ends, Norway would have made a sensation.

Yeah, it was very strange game, didn't expected that they are capable to give such fight. Now I went through Canada results and found that they conceded 6 goals against Austria, but won game 7:6 after extra time. It was even more strange game because Austria scored 5 goals in 3rd period without response and madecomeback from 1:6 to 6:6. Crazy!
Latvia suffered one of biggest defeats in recents years - 7:1 against Finland. Today we have no upsets or very big results.

Good question, I never thought about it because I started to follow hockey when they already used current scoring system. Maybe it's more fair - if you can't beat your opponent in regular time, then you don't deserve full points, don't even talk about bonus point.

Hey, Norway, WTF you're doing? First that crazy game with Canada and now you basically eliminated Sweden. For Norway now it's enough to get 2 points in 2 remaininggames and they will be in 1/4 final after 14 years.
USA situation after loss to Latvia is also complicated. But this is what you got with such attitude and roster not fully made from NHL players.

Never had a liking to this sports and I don't even know what the game is about or how it is played so I definitely haven't played any bets on ice hockey at no point. But this year, I'm trying to keep an open mind and enjoy more sports like MLB and ice hockey especially now that most European football seasons are over. In this age of AI, I should be able to catch on pretty quickly but the tournament is the most brief tournament I've seen.

Latvia performance against USA was also surprising. Latvia slowly turns into kerbstone for USA. Yesterday they won in important match, that will allow one team either to go to playoff, or to face weaker opponent there. Few years ago Latvia beat USA in important game and took bronze medals for the first time.

Canada vs Slovakia is good game to watch today. Canada must recover their unbeatable status in this game

We have first team to reach 1/4 stage and this is Canada (lol, what a surprise?) from Group B. Situation in Group A looks more interesting, as there are 4 teams who have chances to jump in last spot for 1/4 train. Austria and Latvia must won their games, and the one who has more goals in total will go to next stage. For Latvia it looks easier, as they play against Hungary. While Austria must play against USA, who are also fighting for last spot for 1/4 (but they need Latvia to lose to Hungary). Germany has played all their games and now can only wait.

This is one of the craziest World Cup hockey games I have ever seen. Who would have thought that Norway would perform so well? Or is it actually the other team performing badly? Big games tonight, I’ll be glued to the screen.

And after all we don't have upsets when it comes to elimination. Both Sweden and USA got wins in their  decisive games and also got results that they needed from other games and they're in 1/4 final already. I was sure that at least one of these teams will be eliminated. But as much as I love underdog stories, having all strongest teams in playoffs is great.
Today it's remaining battle for 1st place between Switzerland and Finland and also Canada - Czechia. Great games to end group stage.

Czechia vs Canada was a really intense and great game yesterday. Had so much joy watching it. Half of the game Czechia was winning it 2:0, but Canadians were attacking all the time. Then Canada scored 3 goals in a row and took the victory. Switzerland vs Finland was a cool game too. Just look at period results, 2-0, 0-2, 2-0 As if Switzerland in second period were replaced by other team. USA really jumped in the last train this time, even though they champions of 2025.

I have watched some hockey games, most especially the ice hockey games, but I have not really followed the games on a regular basis, because in my country hockey isn’t very know as a sport, and I sometimes wonder if my country even have a National hockey team.

Here in my country we don’t have ice and snow, so I don’t how how they can possibly be playing ice hockey, but I’m a fan of the hockey game and I would really like to watch and learn more things about the hockey game, sometimes I even wished I was a hockey player.

The stage for the 1/4 finals are set

My prediction is Finland, Switzerland, Canada and Latvia is going to the semifinals. From all pairs looks that Canada is biggest favorite against USA, what sounds a bit weird if you don't know context. Switzerland is playing at home and they're looking much better than Sweden. While Norway - Latvia is most ballanced pair - Norway is doing amazing things this year, Latvia is in great shape too. Should be very interesting.
