Xapo Bank just simplified the referral program (May 2026 update)

Got an email from Xapo Bank today (May 21, 2026) saying they’ve simplified the referral program. Sharing in case it matters to others here who hold/use Xapo.

What changed

Old structure (until yesterday):
- USD 42/month in BTC for 12 months, then USD 4/month for life
- Required a USD 5,000 minimum balance on both sides every month
- Roughly USD 504 in year one + ongoing trickle

New structure (from May 21, 2026):
- USD 500 USD in BTC, one-time
- Paid to both the referrer and the new member
- No minimum balance required — this is the big change
- Bonus credited after 33 consecutive days of paid Xapo Bank membership
- No cap on number of referrals

On existing referrals
Xapo explicitly grandfathered all referrals made before today under the old terms — they keep paying out monthly as promised. New friends from today onward get the new flat USD 500.

My take
Net-net I think the new program is more attractive for both sides:
- Lower bar for the new member (the USD 5,000 balance requirement was the deal-breaker for most people in my circle)
- Cleaner expectation — USD 500, you know exactly what you’re getting
- The lifetime trickle was nice but realistically depended on the referred member never letting their balance drop below 5k, which a lot of people couldn’t commit to

Worse for: high-volume referrers who were banking on the year-one stack of USD 42/mo × 12 + future trickle. For them, the new flat USD 500 is a haircut. That’s probably why Xapo grandfathered existing referrals — they would have lost their power users otherwise.

I am not sure if many users here are still using that. Long time ago when not that many who are aware of the web wallets used it and even I.

But as soon as everyone recognized that they're not holding their keys in it, it's no longer an interesting wallet to use.

Curious how the change reads to other referrers, and whether the “no balance requirement” actually moves the needle for friends you’d been pitching the old program to.

I doubt it that many are interested on that since referring on them is quite hard and even there goes your friends, it's more of a security issue than of the changes into that program.

Old Xapo wallet ≠ Xapo Bank. Coinbase acquired Xapo's custody business in 2019. What remained relaunched in 2021 as Xapo Bank — a licensed credit institution in Gibraltar (GFSC Permission No. 23171). Different product entirely: real USD bank account with routing number, physical VISA worldwide, BTC custody under a banking license. The web wallet you're remembering is gone.

You're right that "not your keys" applies. For pure BTC holdings I'd never use a custodian — Coldcard only. But Xapo Bank's use case isn't sovereign Bitcoin storage. It's for non-US/non-UK residents who want a real USD account + global VISA + some BTC integrated in one regulated bank, when the alternatives are Wise (no BTC), Coinbase (no real bank), Revolut (not really a bank in most jurisdictions).

Agreed Bitcoin Talk isn't the natural market — most folks here are self-custody first, which is the right call for sovereign BTC. The thread was more "here's updated info for people already using the product" than "you should sign up".

Well, thanks for the time for educating me about Xapo bank.

At least this time, there's this thread for the newer update if ever someone might look at it and has been using the product for such time.

It just made me remember the wallet that has been known before until they've changed their business model.

The new structure is very interesting, $500 is too bold. If the distribution is really fair and there are no hidden conditions I will see if it won't make them bankrupt in the first few months.

This method may increase the number of registrants, but does not guarantee that they will become active users. The crypto industry is notorious for sybil attacks.
