ETH's daily volume remains at $13B (top spot) for the volatile altcoin category. Even its second-place competitor only accounts for one-quarter of ETH's total volume (around $3B). This position doesn't indicate ETH is heading towards a slow collapse or a loss of investor confidence.

What do you guys think about the price action of ETH? It didn't make an higher high while bitcoin did, and the price of eth is crashing harder then btc. Is it an good buy or will eth slowly die?
No one knows exactly, but what do you think good buy looks like? Would the price action need to be so predictable that everyone thought it would be safe bet?

Literally every coin has seem like a bad idea to buy, when it was good time to buy.

You could ask things like: Have tokenomics when they moved to PoS changed so much that they will explain the price action? Because when there's no way to measure how much something costs to mine, there's no way to calculate what's the reasonable price to sell.

Although we are going through a recession, the image of the entire market is not good. Although the price of (ETH) is going down, there will be nothing like complete exhaustion. (ETH) will turn around and if the price of (BTC) goes up then the price of (ETH) will also increase.

However, I think investing in bitcoin from a personal preference is the safest, so I am maintaining a small (DCA) and investing for the long term

These are my thoughts too. With all the money that has gone into buying spot ETH and the value is still where it is today, I don't think there's anything much to say about it. Like you, I recently started getting more into Bitcoin. It's something if I did a few years ago, I'd be much better position now. But I thought bitcoin had less upside and went into eth. While eth did good, it collapsed during the Japanese carry trade market dump.

Anyway, that's by the way. Right now, there's been no increase in activities in Ethereum ecosystem. Almost all those projects that made ETH what it was like boredApes, and more have all died. Even one of the Bankless co-founders that heavily promoted the "ETH is money" narrative recently sold 100%of his ETH bag here at what would be thought to be the bottom. Says a lot imo.

I will prefer to buy bitcoin instead. It may not be a single buy, but it can be DCA.

I do not trust altcoins, but I think that ethereum will get to $5000 in the next bull market. Buying it now will be profitable. But I do not see any good hold reason I should buy ethereum when there is bitcoin.

I know ethereum will go above $5000, but I do not know if it will find it hard to go above $500 billion marketcap market.
You're saying it will eventually reach 5k, and that it will be 2.5 times its current price, which is actually a good reason to buy. I can also understand why you prefer Bitcoin it's a rock-solid investment. If Ethereum can go 2.5x, so can Bitcoin, based on its current price. Whatever we buy, the best way to accumulate is through the DCA method it's always the best method in my opinion.

Buying Eth at the dump was the reason for many traders making good money in the Ethereum trade. Due to the market crash, the price of ether in 2k and it was right time to inverse your valuable money and we know the price of Ethereum will back to 3k. The price of bitcoin will back to the bull run when the Christmas come, So wait for the Christmas vacation and the price of bitcoin will goes to maximum. The buyer also use there money to inverse in stable coin like Solana and BNB.

ETH will slowly die. So don't buy ETH. It's gonna be outdated coin, The better to drive the trend instead of investing in a coin that is getting stuck for 5 years. If you don't believe me, then take a look at how Tom Lee is in huge floating loss.

Even the picture says it all about how holding ethereum in long term is just decreasing your money. Even inflation can do better than ethereum does.

To conclude, buying ethereum is such a huge mistake. The better to invest directly in Bitcoin instead of ethereum.

I say this based on the ROI result in the last 5 years.
This is misleading. Just 9 months ago it was 4900 dollars, whereas 5 years ago today, it was under 3K. So we can safely say that if you take a periods peak, and bottom of another period then you can compare and make it look bad, whereas if you take the real prices, things aren't that great, today we are back to where it was 5 years ago, but we are beyond the bull run and in the bear run so it is expected that the price is low.

That is true for bitcoin too, we are nearly 2021 peak, so we are down, or same with other alts as well. ETH may have not done great, so I get that, I wish it did better and we all expected beyond 5k those are true but that doesn't mean that it is as bad as you make it sound like.

Ethereum did reach a new all time high last year, but it has gone down a lot since then. One of the Bankless co-founders announced that he had sold his Ethereum. Some other notable ETH supporters have gone quiet and are no longer attacking Bitcoin. Ethereum as money has not worked out as many anticipated. I wouldn’t call it dead because it is one of the blockchains with the highest activity. People are using Ethereum’s infrastructure for stablecoins and financial applications; however, most of that value is not captured by the native token of that blockchain.

There are certain privacy improvements that might make for a bullish narrative, but the long term trend is clear. The ETH price won’t see significant appreciation organically. You might see an occasional pump, which will be short lived as long term holders will see it as an exit opportunity.
Not only ETH though but even BTC or any other coins have experienced the same thing. It is just that last year was the bull market but the current year is a bear season. I'm into BTC but I don't hate ETH, it is just that it is only a good thing that those ETH fan bois stop comparing or attacking BTC anymore because of ETH. ETH is a cryptocurrency which means it is technically money but crypto is volatile, so it should not surprise us seeing their value change. But there is also a crypto that works better as a money due to their stability. Then there is also those that are close to a fiat which are stablecoins.

Yes, ETH is not dead but dead is only if the crypto has a zero value and then it now got delisted on any exchange sites. ETH in fact has a large value already for an altcoin despite the drop, so people should not expect a lot on it anymore.

There may be people that support eth for what it is (transparent or centralized) so if they decrease this effect, then they may also flee but at the same time it can allow for the other to get in because they like those features to be combined with ETH. That is organic but there is also some manipulations in crypto even for the BTC.

It's not dead. If it's dead then we'd see how it will fall from the rank of #2 down to the lowest. That's basically the sign that it's already dying but not for now. And I don't think that it is dying soon even if the price of it keeps on falling down because that's a normal thing to see when we're in a bear market.
Whole altcoin market is stagnating. It's not only ETH that failed to make higher high, others failed too.
Altcoin as a whole have changed and it's nothing more than playing ground for VC to multiply their money even at the expense of the entire market. Can't blame ETH for this.
Yea, a lot have failed as well and didn't make into a new ATH. And that's why the market just looks bad and I think it's not only bitcoin that gives that push to the altcoins market. Altcoins like Ethereum and others that have a huge network these days can also give that little bump to the entire market but only for the short period of time. If someone plays out good in these alts, they can make money but the majority of us would be losing.

Many prefer still to buy Bitcoin, and I won't disagree on them, but if you want to accumulate some altcoins, ETH is a good choice as well despite of it's performance during the 2025 bull run.

Speaking of that bull run, there's a reason why Ethereum alongside some top altcoins didn't pump up that much in price. There's not that much enough liquidity that's being poured towards altcoins because majority of them are into meme coins that are being created via the pump.fun website. Billions of dollars are going towards those meme coins because during the bull run, the hype of meme coin is also at it's peak so many investors preferred to invest into meme coins hoping that they'll make money way faster, and that's the case for a few, but for the majority, it isn't but it's the complete opposite.

As for Ethereum, it will not die, or it will slowly not die. The project is still developing, and still making some upgrades here and there. Ethereum will remain as the top 2 in terms of market cap, and I don't recommend that much, but if you want to be into altcoins, Ethereum is one of the best choices. Not financial advice of course. There is indeed Santa Claus Rally in December but is not a guarantee that the market will rally, image above is monthly return of BTC in december every year and ETH will roughly follow the same trend.
Better approach would be to buy at lowest of this season and hold until the next bullish season which guarantee capital gain. Only works for top altcoin though or even better just choose BTC.

With ETH having abandoned the use of a real consensus mechanism, at this point it's probably more of a test bed for protocol extensions to be put into a real cryptocurrency, than being an investment itself.

What do you mean by outdated? What coin has better and more active development team? What other altcoin has created more for altcoin community?

I am hoping that your only measurement for being outdated isn't the price action, because being overpriced has nothing to do with being outdated. Tech under the hood is pretty solid and so are the plans.

Since this is the altcoin section, if your only goal is to make more money, bitcoin hasn't been the only thing moving up in 5 year timeframe.

ETH's daily volume remains at $13B (top spot) for the volatile altcoin category. Even its second-place competitor only accounts for one-quarter of ETH's total volume (around $3B). This position doesn't indicate ETH is heading towards a slow collapse or a loss of investor confidence.

Ethereum's fundamentals are still very strong. Ethereum still blows away all the other altcoin in the world when it come to handling onchain value and traffic. Their shift to PoS mechanism, increased scaling with Layer 2 and the upcoming upgrades give it a firm utility in long run. No other altcoin can even come close.

But yes its current price has been a bit disappointing. And the actual reason for that is the projects within their entire ecosystem are making a lot of money. But that direct value has not been able to pull the ETH token on itself properly.
