Reading this, It also made me wonder how he must have also been a tool for the prediction market in terms of giving them confidential information that they must have used to cheat their customers in other event that they must have listed on their platform because lately I read a post where the person was talking about exposing polymarket for contacting them and asking they corporate in getting insider information. In this case, this guy also took advantage of the market the way they must have done to players too but what he did was wrong because it's actually against company policy.

Now is getting clearer to those who may arguably against people that speaks against compulsory KYC platforms not being anything to trust no matter the promises of ensuring of the safeguarding of our information. This news is just one of many we're not aware of but just imagine how scary it is, how much more a lot more is revealed about how our confidential information are bargained for like a commodity. As for the polymarket, I have always being of the opinion that they're a manipulated market place by insiders.

With time, many of these atrocities committed on the polymarket platform would be exposed, and gradually, the governments of nations would put a ban on the polymarket, and if that happens, the system would be cleansed of all bad actors and players messing up the prediction market against the wish of the community would definitely be brought to book. I'm sure Google is doing very well and is profitable, but sometimes people don't measure up in the workplace and mess things up like this. I mean... It is pretty obvious the person who betted on that market using his privileged information as engineer on Google did not have any intention to get caught red-handed, he knew pretty well he was committing a crime and he intended to conceal it the best he could.
After this incident, I am sure Google and other big tech companies will have some talk to their highest ranking employees about the use of their privileged information and the possible consequences of engaging in betting markets.

The popularity of these markets is relatively new and it makes sense there are people who don't understand the seriousness of inside trading, but not knowing the law does not mean won't get thrown in prison.

This news further proves how unhealthy the prediction market is because it is more vulnerable to insider than other types of betting, such as sports betting even can still be manipulated through match-fixing.
Perhaps the betting market would begin to decline as users increasingly realize the potential losses from insider.
Polymarket only sees the potential profit potential, ignoring the irregularities within the bets.
Insider could be minimized if Polymarket verified every bet.

Michele Spagnuolo, a Google engineer,  has been charged with using information he had early access to through his work at Google to make bets that saw him win up $1.2m. The search engine company staff has placed $2.7m in bets related to Google. He has worked for Google for twelve years and wanted to make quick money risking his career

Spagnuolo's most lucrative alleged Polymarket wins were correctly predicting who would and would not be the most searched for person on Google in 2025. He placed a bet in November that D4vd would become Google's most-searched person because he had access to information Google had collected before it was released to the public.

After Trump had fired many of the regulators that are responsible for overseeing prediction markets and there were some high profile cases where it appeared people were getting away with insider trading, critics like Cofeezilla argued that crime is now legal. Spagnulo isn’t even an American citizen or resident. He might have thought that U.S. law didn’t apply to him, but since Polymarket is regulated by the CFTC, it can be treated under the same rules as other types of insider trading.

Insider trading and market manipulation might still be rampant on prediction markets, but this action shows that there isn’t total impunity. Anybody that is looking to profit in ways that violate the law will have to be more conscious of ways in which they are leaking their identity.

The amount might seem like a large sum but it might not be enough to sustain him for a long time if not put to good use. In some developing countries, it might be enough to live a good life for a long time. But in developed countries like the US, he might become broke within a short period. We have seen many examples of people squandering money gotten from illegal activities. Many of these criminals don't put the proceeds to good use. Regardless of the amount he won, it is not enough to jeopardize his career and tarnish his image forever.

As authorities engage in deeper investigation, I believe that more people engaging in this insider trading will be discovered. I am also waiting for a top governemnt official to be indicted because I feel they are part of this crime.

It is quite unfortunate though that they see such happening on their platform and the pay deaf ears and blind eyes to it only focused on the profit they generate from the system without looking at the longevity and the quality of services they render without jeopardy.
So far they are yet to comment on all these things unfolding on their platform, their official social media handles do not have any of such posts like appealing to their community to be patient while they investigate matters as it concerns happenings on their platform. They do not care about their actions though and that is a no no for me because that act alone shows that they don't give a damn thought about what the community thinks.

It is heartbreaking seeing member that is surposed to be serving the public getting involved in such criminal act. However, Intruding into someone privacy without proper authorization is a criminal offence and should be treated accordingly so the rest will learn.  Moreover these shouldn't be sweep under the carpet because from the look of things their will be more people that are involved in this maybe further investigation on it can uncover more dirty act .

There are many more cases like this that were not found out, and would not be found out. If the person stays very careful and not greedy to make bets that would become obvious, they might not be caught.
These are the dangers of prediction markets I've been talking about, since something that certain people alone have access to the information should not be a bet.
If stock traders are not allowed to trade on insider information, why should they be allowed to gamble on insider information? It just doesn't make sense.
The market is just too vast to regulate. You can't regulate a market that cuts across every single thing from politics to tech, to businesses, to equity, to sports and many more. It's simply impossible. And more than one person has access to the information, and they may tell other people too. I don't know how things will evolve for the prediction market, but it's not looking good.

You make a solid point there, because the moment a platform begins to ignore regulatory pressure and public perception,  then the risk of encountering long term problems becomes extremely high. Although, the polymarket is more of a prediction market than it is a casino, and that’s why they pay less attention to responsible gambling and more attention on growth and trading activities.

If a staff of this platform is using insider information to enrich himself then that means that this is not the first time it has been happening and many of the workers must have been doing thid for long without being caught. They can choose to sell the insider information to people that will use it and rob the platform making money for themselves.
This is a vulnerability that each platform especially casinos have to be checking regularly to ensure that their workers do not use insider information to make money for themselves.
