According to some posts that I have read recently from some good posters about this, I changed the way that I am thinking about the issue which I think may be self-centered. I also thought before that such threads should be locked, but come to think of it, this is a forum. I do not think anymore that such thread should be locked, but if it is getting to the point that people are only repeating what other people have posted and you noticed, just report it to the moderator to lock it.
I think this is the same thing the OP is talking about. When adequate response has been given, the thread should be locked. Most times, the answer to a question has been supplied in the first and second pages and not everyone will have the appetite to go further into the next pages to check if a different answer has been given. I stand to be corrected but most times, after the 4th or 5th page, the answers become generic and repetitive, typical examples of spam.

I see some thread’s in meta board that are direct questions and straight correct answers has been given to the direct question.
For example this thread Does sMerit actually Decay?
After correct answers have been given to direct questions the thread should be locked by the OP or mod to avoid spam.
I understand what you are saying but one of the reasons why such thread are not sometimes locked is because those thread usually trigger other quality conversations, when those conversations are going on it will be very wrong for the thread to be locked, remember this is a discussion forum and any thread that brings out more discussions is highly appreciated and it those not really matter if the thread was created to ask a direct question as long as other quality conversations have been raised in that thread it should be left open for discussions to continue.

Once the thread goes inactive for two straight days, I believe the thread is good as completing the reason it was created, moderators are then supposed to lock the thread, any conversation to start up the discussion is highly likely to be low quality.

The topic starter should also take responsibility of closing the thread once an adequate answer has been provided, there is no need keeping the thread running for days, most bump afterwards are not adding meaningfully to the topic but repetitive posts.

Sometimes they're people who choose to allow their threads to be having more pages even though the objectives of the thread has been achieved, so most of the threads we comments on, the answers has been suggested in the first page and second page of the thread but yet they're open...And secondly, if you observe that a thread has gain all the necessary answers that sort for the question by op, you can remind the op to lock it's thread, but some of us doesn't like to remind an op...

Actually in other threads people spam indirectly, but it take us time to notice such, if someone spam in a thread, you have right to report the post..And if moderators found out that a particular thread is not bringing a positive response, they can as well lock the thread by themselves..I have seen many threads locked by mods...

Mixed feelings. I've had some additional information to add to a topic a few times, that I thought would be constructive to the discussion, but it was locked before I was able too. I could theoretically create my own topic in response, but that becomes messy and likely isn't warranted the majority of the time either.

~~

I agree with @Welsh. The person who should lock a topic is its creator, not the moderator.

The moderator should only close a topic if it has already achieved its main objective and is a source of spam.

This is a forum, and the goal is to be able to discuss topics, regardless of their timeline.

I understand that direct questions with straightforward answers may not add anything further. However, this doesn't mean that – without spam – the debate can't evolve into something more complex.

It should be noted that the moderator's job is not to close topics just because someone thinks the answer has been given.

I think there's far more junk scattered throughout the forum, like topics and posts with only one character, like ".", than should be deleted, rather than wasting time closing topics.

When I believe the question gets enough answers from the public or moderator, then usually I advise OP to lock the thread from the lower left. Not often do I report to the moderator; maybe sometimes I report when I notice there are spammers even after getting the correct answer. I have to admit users often repeat each other when the thread remains unlocked.

However, if the question is directly related to the forum moderation and it's been answered by the moderator or admins, then they could directly lock the thread by themselves to avoid spamming on the forum. Question to the public probably would keep unlocked for further discussion based on the circumstances and type of the questions.

Since several answers have already been given on your topic, and it seems that not everyone agrees, you can ask the moderators to close the topic yourself if you see that not only the question has already been answered several times, but the topic itself has lost its relevance.
Speaking of myself, I've done this a few times, and as a rule, moderators are always very responsive.

There should be exemptions to this your request.

I have noticed that some question threads receive answer and are exhausted in a few pages after creation but during the discussion, there may arise similar questions as the one raise in the Op. Then, the discussion will change from the title to another similar question or questions raised in the thread. This makes it logical to allow the thread to continue to flow and not to lock it.

If the thread is eventually locked, there could arise what will be seen as a similar thread. Why being in a haste to lock a thread when some threads in the gambling section are in thousands of pages?

Here is where the challenge may fall, how do you know if the OP is being satisfied with the information received or still await more order views or opinions from other members that are yet to come across the trade with their possible suggestions or views, I think not every question that is being asked as a direct answer that is a closed ended answer, except if the OP find it satisfying enough and decided to luck the thread.
