Have a nano ledger s plus and haven't updated the firmware in a long time.  I haven't done a transaction during this time as well.  I also haven't updated the ledger live either on my windows laptop.  The reason for not updating the firmware is because I was traveling and thus didn't have access to my seed phrase so didn't want to do a firmware update for this reason.

I noticed I'm several firmware versions behind.  The current firmware version is 1.6.1

The firmware I'm using now is 1.4.1.

So I'm several firmware versions behind as it goes from what it shows below.

1.4.1

1.5.0

1.5.1

1.6.0

1.6.1

It seems to show that ledger live is now called Ledger Wallet.  Shows updated version is 4.6.0.   I'm still on ledger live 2.13.1.

1.  I can just update from ledger live on the top right corner and it should then update directly to ledger wallet 4.6.0?  Is ledger live and ledger wallet the same program but just a name change?  So it wouldn't be downloading a new program on my windows laptop right?  Always update ledger live or ledger wallet first before doing firmware update right?

2.  When I do the firmware update, is it going to do several firmware updates?  Thus it will go from 1.4.1 to 1.5.0.  Then 1.5.0 to 1.5.1.  Then 1.5.1 to 1.6.0.  Then finally 1.6.0 to 1.6.1?  A while back I was several firmware version behind and I noticed it went from one firmware version to another but I did notice it skipped one firmware version during this process but in the end did get to the latest firmware version.  Can someone explain how this will go when I do this firmware update?  Will I need to manually press buttons to do multiple firmware updates to go from one firmware version to another?

3.  Does ledger wallet always require you to update the apps on the nano ledger s plus before it does the firmware update?  I forgot if it prompts to you to this before firmware update?  Or it ask you to do it after the firmware update?  In this case, the only app that I believe would need to be updated is Bitcoin app only and maybe Bitcoin cash?  I have another app on it but pretty certain that app for the coin never updated it's app.  How will it work with updating the Bitcoin app on my nano ledger s plus during this whole multiple firmware update process?  I want to be sure I'm doing this correctly as I haven't done a firmware update in a while.  I don't remember if they do the Bitcoin app update before firmware update or after it.

Anyone can answer this?  I am going to have to update the firmware but want to know exactly how it's going to work.

The other thing is what about ledger live to ledger wallet on Windows?  Do I just update it and it goes directly to my old ledger live to the new ledger wallet?  I recall back then you always updated ledger live first before firmware update.  But what about here since it's now ledger wallet and no longer ledger live?

Ledger Wallet is just a rebrand of Ledger Live. Update your Ledger Live -> Ledger Wallet (latest version). Then update the firmware.

When updating, just follow the instructions on the device to confirm each update. It's pretty straightforward

I took advantage of your question here and just connected my Ledger Nano S to see if there were any firmware or Ledger Wallet updates
(mine is Ledger Nano S - Firmware 2.1.0)
Yours is 1.6.1

I took some screenshots for you to check
As Ninja said, it's very intuitive

Open your Ledger Live app, update it (it will then be called Ledger Wallet)
Open it again, connect your device and start the firmware update
You don't need to worry about which version you're on or going through all the firmwares, the app does it automatically
In about 5 minutes you'll update everything

Okay so open ledger live.  Wait a bit for the top right corner to show ready to update ledger wallet.  Then it automatically updates the old ledger live 2.1 to the latest ledger wallet right?  Then open ledger wallet.

Then connect nano ledger s plus to laptop.  Then update the firmware?

The thing is I have to do multiple firmware updates right since I'm a few versions behind?  That is why I ask.  If it was just firmware update, it would be different right?  Since here, it's going to go from one firmware to another until it gets to the last one?

What about the Bitcoin wallet app wallet?  That is done after the firmware update right?  I forgot if that was before firmware update or after it.

Thanks.

The thing is you are using the older nano ledger s.  The firmware that uses hasn't been updated in a while.  Wanted to know from those who have a nano ledger s plus and didn't update firmware in a while.  I am several version behind which is why I ask this.

Don't worry about that, just do the update, the app will update for you automatically, you don't need to do every update manually

You can update the apps after all, after both  Wink

Okay.  So there is no new ledger wallet software then.  I had thought there would be a new ledger wallet icon created.

I'm several firmware versions behind.  The last thing was a while back I had the same situation.  I recall I had to manually go from one firmware version to the next until it got to the latest firmware version.  What I did recall happen was it did skip one firmware update when I did this before getting to the latest one.  So I wanted to know if it would be similar to it now or it go one firmware version to the next till the last or it goes directly to the latest?  Or it goes one by one but you don't need to confirm each firmware update to the next?  So you say it will just do everything itself right.  So it will say now it's updating to 1.5.0, then it will say updating to 1.5.1 and all the way to the latest one right?  Did you had to update multiple firmware version because you were several firmware version behind?  Thus that is why you say that is what happens?  I know most people should update anytime there is a firmware update but I didn't for a while and was surprised I was this many firmware versions behind.  Usually nano ledger s plus back then did not do that many firmware updates.

Okay so I can update the apps after all.  That is what I thought it was as I don't remember the exact order of update with this one and the firmware update.  I thought this one was last.

This is a bit risky because you're in the deep firmware version and don't have a seed backup. The firmware update to the ledger device sometimes may cause firmware corruption. If you can still access the ledger live without updating its firmware and make a transaction, I recommend moving your funds to a new wallet before updating its firmware so that if the update fails, you have already moved your funds to a wallet with a seed backup that you can recover once your ledger is successfully fixed or updated. It's just the same as on the phone: if the update fails, it will get stuck in a bootloop or stuck on the logo.

If you don't have any option to make a transaction, then you don't have any other choice but to update its firmware and ledger live straightforward as Tryninja suggested above. But still this is a risky approach if you don't have a backup seed.

If everything goes well, I recommend moving all of your funds from Ledger to a new wallet, generating a new seed from Ledger, and then moving all of your funds to your Ledger device. Keep your seed backup safe; never lose it again.

The thing is if I have the seed phrase, then there is no issue then right?

The thing is I'm several firmware versions behind.  The thing is a while back, I had a similar situation where I was a few firmware versions behind as well but not as much as this one though.  I did the firmware update and it had to go through several firmware updates before it went to the last firmware update.  What I recall was it did skip one firmware update during this process but went to the last one.  So I wanted to know is this going to be similar.  The reason for not updating the firmware for so long was because I didn't have the seed phrase so I didn't do the firmware update.

The current old ledger live does work but if I try to do any type of transaction, I'm pretty certain it probably would tell me to update my firmware and/or the ledger live to ledger wallet right?  My ledger live is very old as I haven't updated it in a while.

I once updated my old ledger nano s, and it just reseted without any warning.

I had my seed with me at the time , and it wasn't so scary... but certainly very inconvenient as I could not have the seed with me at the time.

A hardware wallet without a proper seed backup is something very dangerous. Actually, any wallet without a back up is.
