The quoted news never state the the couple chose a lump sum of just $415k after taxes so that people are aware in how much they really get. Well, they buy a home and a land and put their granddaughters to college which probably have some jobs now I expect considering it was 10 years ago. At least they put it on good use and that's the great part there. I wonder if her husband is still gambling because if he does I hope he'd retired with those amount of winnings, considering back then that's still pretty huge and put it onto investments as well would surely paid off.

This is a good thread that I will use to site as example to some people that thinks that winning in gambling is by their power and might meanwhile gambling is something that can give you a huge win on a good day that you do not even expect but you will see someone that have been gambling compulsively for many years will not win up to that amount. Gambling is a game of luck and whether you are compulsive or not, that's not what will determine if you can win a huge amount or not.

What's dangerous is when people mistake the exception for the rule. Just because Glenda's $10 wasn't wasted doesn't mean gambling isn't anymore a waste of money. Just because Glenda's 10$ turned into a million doesn't mean tickets of every Tom, Dick, and Harry would also turn into a million.

Such type of lucky draws happen only once in someone's life, but in many people's lives such luck doesn't exist and those type of people will keep losing again and again in gambling. I do not think that woman will change her opinion, but she would have been convinced with the win that anyone can be lucky. But if the woman did not gamble after the high amount of money that she won, I will not be surprised at all. I agree with that point too, because one of the impact lf winning a jackpot is that  it has the ability to change the life of the winner, 10 years is not a joke and anything that the money was put in could have yielded alot of profits by now so is very possible that the land they couple bought at that time should be yielding profits in rents, so this point to the important of knowing the place of luck in gambling.

Good for her and for her husband that she was proved wrong. However, the same can't be said about other thousands or millions of gamblers who bought the same ticket and didn't won anything. For most people, gambling won't return jackpot prizes, and that is a fact they will have to deal with. Therefore, if there isn't a reason else to gamble, this activity is indeed going to be just a waste of money for majority.

I've seen stories like this in my country. In the past, about 10 years ago, people who got involved with gambling were labeled as reckless or addicted to gambling. People weren't even curious to find out if the person they were accusing was actually addicted or not. They just accused them of being addicted. It turns out that many people won money with the lottery. Don't ask me how that was possible because I don't know either.

I only know that many people in my country won a lot of money with the lottery because even people close to me won. So the government legalized sports betting and casinos, and society stopped looking at gambling as something evil and started seeing it as entertainment, not a waste of time or money.

I have heard of curious cases like these before, but not specifically the case of which this news is about.

It should be clarified that she won against all odds, and although other members have said that the $10 she spent is little money, many people could not afford to buy several tickets to try their luck (I'd personally rather buy several tickets of $1 to try my luck). Scratch-off tickets for $10 are something you buy on special occasions or, in the case of the protagonist of the news, to prove something, and although the possibility exists, I don't think it's a sustainable type of gambling.

I would call this a rare occurrence, luck coming when the woman didn't want it, but this story makes it clear that luck is unpredictable. And I'm pretty sure if that woman did the same thing, she would probably have to try hundreds, thousands or even millions of times to get that kind of luck again and it might never happen again, because lottery gambling has the lowest odds of winning, if I'm not mistaken the odds are 1 in 292 million, so it's also quite correct to say this game is a waste.
