One major problem that contribute to insecurity in Nigeria is the spread of fake news and wrong information. Many times, most people who come across unverified post in social media and rush to share without confirming if the new is true or not. This kind of misinformation can create tension between communities and even make security agencies to work hard to separate facts from rumors. In some cases, fake reports has really made people to neglect their homes because of fear. So, as a citizen need to verify information before sharing it to others. Because it can prevent tension, confusion and it can prevent unnecessary fear from spreading. I think social media users should face more stricter consequences for spreading fake news that relate to security information? What’s your take on this.
Bro do you know Nigeria media outlets is controlled, and they don't have the liberty to report every need they receive until it's approved by the government. The only people who report news from a raw standpoint are these blogs on X and people's WhatsApp status. Most news you see aren't fake but what the government is trying to surpress. For instance, two years ago my area in the East had a serious clash with herdsmen which resulted to the death of 3 women who went to the bush, and in retaliatory attacks over 10 herder's were murdered and several wounded, it never made the news headlines, instead the government quietly deployed military men to that point.
Today again, at Obunagha in Bayelsa State one or more students were kidnapped in their community school and the whole schools around closed down in less than 30 minutes, the area was very chaotic as students were running home and parents rushing to take their wards home, now confirm if you've seen this news on the pages of those news channels you're trusting?
Charles-Tim mentioned South West, I guess it's already happening in South South too.
