It's difficult to think deeply or research this. In my personal conclusion, someone who can't maintain their gambling winnings is because they're too aggressive and can't control themselves. Because they are chasing their wins instead of having fun, you make more profit when you gamble for fun because you will have to prepare your bankroll and time, you are watchful of your emotions and gambling habit in other not to be addicted to gambling, not exceeding your budget and don't chase their losses.

Although that is not a guaranteed thing when we play for fun and we win more. That's more of a psychological thing to me. When I play for fun, more wins do come. But when I think of gambling to make money, I'm losing more. I know it also happens to the others so there's that kind of reality experience for each of us when we gamble for fun. The truth of the matter is that those who gambled and win a huge amount of money which they spent most of it  in setting up their   own business, and still ended up losing every thing to the extent of now selling off those investments simply to continue to see money to spend on gambling., and this is nothing else but a result of gambling addiction, the gambler in question got addicted to gambling along the line and  that is what has resulted to him losing everything to the tone of selling of his business just to see money to keep financing the gambling habit.

I agree with you and i believe there is some reasons and one of the biggest reason is that they start treating a temporary win as a permanent source of income.
