Gambling and a business are not the same. When gambling, you only have to focus on a specific game and you make a prediction and bet on it, but you do not know whether you will win or not. However, in business, you will lose first. It will not be what you think. You will lose there, but every loss will be a learning experience for you. You will understand your mistakes from every loss and you can gradually do something good by correcting it, but in gambling, you will never learn from the mistakes you make that you will win without losing. And a business is not only security for you, it will provide financial security for your future generations. And your future generations will be able to manage that business and manage their lives. And if you gamble, you will lose money there or if you win money, it can only be a temporary financial support for you but it will not be long-term for you and your future generations will not get any benefit from it. Gambling is a place of fun, it should never be someone's serious matter, nor should gambling be someone's career.

In fact, it is a matter of thinking about how reasonable it is to compare business to gambling, but it is not as risky as you think that business like gambling is. When you start a business, you have a clear idea about the future road map of your business, if you go to run the business accordingly, there is a high guarantee that you will be able to profit, but when you go to gamble, you will become addicted to it and here there is a risk of losing all your money, but in the business field, you can increase your money several times by using your intelligence, thinking and experience.
Let's say that all business ventures involve taking risks. But these risks are projected or calculated ones. Gambling, on the other hand, involves risks that cannot be calculated. Anyone is seeing gambling as a business will be disappointed. If a businessman follows the right plans and adopts the right models, it would bring good returns, but a comprehensive analysis might not guarantee wins.
I agree with you, both business and gambling have risks, but the type of risk is different, and the reality of both is different. Business is where everything depends on experience, hard work and determination, where despite the risk, the chances are in our favor through our hard work, but in the case of gambling it is based on luck, where in the long run no sustainable strategy guarantees success, in gambling there is basically no strategy, it depends only on luck, I think. So even though there is no guarantee in business, it is very reliable, and its future can be good in the long run, whereas in gambling everyone has to face losses 99% of the time.

I think it is not right to differentiate between your gambling and a business in real life because as you said, you may want to take either one. The future of gambling or its results is completely uncertain so if you compare the two then I would initially advise you to try to set up a physical business. Because when your business is strong then you will get good profit from that business and with that profit you can gamble later. If you decide to gamble without deciding to do business now and if you lose money while gambling due to some wrong decision of yours then you will regret thinking that you should have focused on business earlier.

I wouldn't say, "socially acceptable", because I'm against opening an all-in business, especially by people under 30,  and I'm a part of the socium. The main reason why I'm against it is in this young age it's indeed like gambling. You simply can't take all the details into account because, at your age, there are many things you're simply not aware of. That's from my personal experience. Of course, there can be people who are super wise at 25.

You know at someone point, one has got to gather the experience need to operate or manage a successful business and to be frank, 30 or someone in their late 20s feels like the right age. Of course they don’t necessarily need to go big all at once but to build it brick by brick. When patterns repeats and the strategies you use in approaching the challenges that comes your way in cause of doing business, those actually do add up to make you better at it.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to the concept of risk. I am currently planning to launch a real-world commercial business, and the deeper I get into the planning phase, the more I realize how many parallels it shares with gambling.
It made me wonder Is starting a business just a socially acceptable form of high-stakes gambling?
Here is how I see the comparison, and I’d love to get the community's perspective on this:
Risk Management vs. House Edge
In Gambling You calculate the odds, accept the house edge, and manage your bankroll to survive variance.
In Business You conduct market research, evaluate competitors, and manage your capital. However, instead of a house edge,you face market volatility, inflation, and changing consumer behavior.
The Illusion of Control
In Gambling Poker players rely on skill, but a bad beat can ruin a perfect strategy. Sports bettors analyze stats, but a single referee decision can spoil the bet.
In Business you can have the perfect business plan, the best suppliers, and great marketing, but an unexpected economic shift can completely wipe you out.
The Psychological Toll
Both require a specific mindset; the ability to handle financial stress, the discipline not to chase losses when a project fails, and knowing when to cut your losses.

For those of you who are experienced gamblers, investors, or entrepreneurs:
Do you look at business ventures through the same lens as a calculated bet?
Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?
Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have transitioned from gambling to running a business or vice versa!!!

Starting a business can be like gambling, in that some people are just inherently clueless and bad at understanding it. There's a reason that banks or other investors ask for a business plan, because it shows a route to profitability. Some entrepreneurs just wing it, hoping that their good idea has decent enough profit margins and through a lot of hard work turn it into something big. However a gambler who is doing it for anything except a fun way to blow some money, lacks a basic understanding of how the odds are engineered against them and they simply won't win in the long run. You have a much greater chance of being successful with a business than you ever will trying to make money long term with most forms of betting.

Is completely unwise to take gambling as business or trying to compare the two, whereas we already know the future of both and how their are not in the same category of things in life, business gives guaranteed income, gambling is a game of uncertainty and you end up losing 2x before you win 1x which make things not to favor you as a gambler.

I don't know the basis of making this comparison because both have no connection in my own point of view. Gambling is not supposed to be treated as a source of income because the winning is not guaranteed. On the other hand, starting a business is a source of income so it should come first so that part of the profit from the business can be used for gambling.  If you gamble without a source of income, it will ultimately lead to depression and that is not good for anyone.

Nowadays, opening a gambling establishment and doing business online has become a viral thing. Where those who have knowledge about gambling can easily create a site and become successful by establishing a gambling establishment. But in the case of general business, if the matter is the same, it is not very easy to establish and achieve success. There is no shortage of customers in gambling, but in the case of general business, attracting customers becomes a bit challenging.
don't see a gambling business as something which is very simple if it requires a lot of experience and expertise together with a lot of funds. Before you can run such a business, running a casino without having enough funds to start with might lead you to one of those big businesses which shutdown because they did not do proper planning imagine launching today and being hit by a jackpot winning which can almost take away half of your reserve funds for payout, and it's just a single win from one person the casino is just getting started and no much money coming from players deposit, yet you will shut down before the profit can even start coming.

There is risk in every endeavour in life, but am made to understand that there are genue risk. Going into a business is a risk, but the risk involved in gambling is far higher than running a business, with the right business planning, even when your business fails, you can still rebuild it, and start once again, but in gambling it is possible you can continue in long term losses, and will not be able to recover.
As a business person, you can insure your business or investment so that whatever happens to your business, the insurance company can compensate you for that. More also, it is possible to have a continuous successful outcome in your business, and even when you face any hitch, it won't be able to crumble your business, therefore, to a esterblish is a more preferred option.

I think in this case we can't draw a complete line between investing, entrepreneurship and gambling in the same way because there are some treatments that require us to look at these from different angles.

In terms of gambling obviously luck still plays a role even though there are strategies when we bet on sportsbetting or games like poker but still our luck is always in control but the situation is different with entrepreneurship and investing because we can't implement the gambling view in this case. Although the strategy may still be there but we also cannot rely entirely on luck because in entrepreneurship we are required to be prepared with the initial planning that we must determine, the strategy that we must do and of course hard work and adaptation to the terrain that we do so that everything goes well so that luck is not the first priority.

If we equate gambling with entrepreneurship and investment or vice versa then we will only be trapped in the wrong thinking because from the beginning the focus of gambling has always been in luck but for investment and entrepreneurship when expecting luck alone we will not be able to succeed to run it well.

When you talk about business, it means you are talking about something profitable although it has its own risk involved but cannot be compared to gambling risk.

The risk in gambling is too high because it takes a long time before winning and at times you don't win at all, all you have to be doing is keep betting and hoping for a better day that your wins will come and in that aspect, you end up losing more than your wins.

Gambling is not a steady means to give you funds or income to live your life, but you business is always there to supply all your financial needs if properly handled .

I can't say I'm fully experienced with all the things you mentioned, but at least, I have an Idea to some extent.
Imo, gambling has nothing to do with starting a business. They only share one thing in common, and that's risk factors. The risk that are tied to Betting are much greater than that of business especially when you know what you're doing. The idea of gambling like sporting betting for example, is that you can still loss no matter how nearly accurate your predictions are. The actions are literally not executed by you. Just because you predict a team to win doesn't mean they will go on to win. At least, in business, you stand a chance of determining the outcome, especially with your approach. But in gambling, your approach is never enough... Luck also places a vital role.

~~~
Both involve risk and that possibility of someone to lose their money, but in business you can improve your odds through better products, good customer service and adapting to market conditions. So i think the key difference is that a business allows you to influence the outcome far more than gambling does.
A gambler is usually playing against mathematical odds that are designed to favor the house. While entrepreneur on the other hand is creating value and solving problems for customers. Of course even the best business can fail due to factors beyond the control of the owner, unlike gambling that the success is not primarily determined by chance. Honestly, I also agree that starting a business requires taking a calculated bet on yourself. Because the difference is that in business your decision, skills and persistence can significantly change the outcome over time.
Thinking of the similarities and with the included word calculated, I say yes.  Business ventures also have risks, but the difference is that people can make calculated risk to venture their business where they control factors that can minimize their losses from unexplored business ventures.  Same way with a calculated bet where a person manages the amount that won't hurt him even if he loses.
The risk control. That is, for me, the dividing line of business and gambling.
I view business as a very risky game same as gambling. At the same time, I still would refer business as gambling. You never can tell whether the business will function. That alone is gamble. Everything per say is gamble. Your life, you wake up today not knowing it will happen. It's gamble. You eat food knowing it might be poisonous or not. It's gamble. The water you buy and drink. Not sure of any poisonous substance. That itself is gamble. So generally, everything is gamble. You just have to play the game of survival in everything. Business, relationships, betting etc. All gamble. Is not necessarily just for business alone.
You are thinking are writing about gambling based in the general perception of life being a product of uncertainty and you concluded that business also is gambling, but in the context of this thread, gambling the ops meant betting and playing games with the aim of winning money to fund your bills in considerable time and consistently, business is more predictable but gambling is not at all you don't know what the outcome will be when you place a bet, so for that you can't leave your life on such a thing, but you can survive by running your business.
For those of you who are experienced gamblers, investors, or entrepreneurs:
Do you look at business ventures through the same lens as a calculated bet?
No. If you have never run a gambling business once it will be hard to look at it from the angle of a calculated bet. In fact most entrepreneurs who start or intend to start a business look at it from the very bright and optimistic perspectives and not as a calculated risk.
Quote
Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?
Both are different. I doubt that gambling operators even think about it this way at all.
Although entrepreneurship can be compared to gambling, I don't think it is. Of course, there are risks in both activities, but in entrepreneurship you depend on your skills and knowledge. If you sell services, you prospect clients, deliver excellent work, get referrals from clients you've already served, advertise online, reinvest in the business, and scale it, for example. In gambling, you may have knowledge, analyze a team, and probabilities, but in the end that's all it is, and luck or misfortune will prevail. You don't invest, and betting what you've won to win more isn't reinvesting. There's no way to scale, improve your skills, and charge more. In a business, you charge for the service; in gambling, you pay for it, and there's no guarantee of return.
Some might argue that starting a business also doesn't guarantee a return, which is true, but there will always be someone wanting to buy what you sell or needing the service you provide.
A business can be profitable in the long term or it can fail, but if well managed and with a good business plan, it can be profitable in the long term, whereas gambling in a casino is a long-term loss, and this is proven. Therefore, gambling should not be compared to business, because they are very different things. Just consider that nobody lives off gambling – I'm talking about the person who gambles, not the casino owner. Nobody can pay their bills every month by gambling, but millions of people live off their businesses, managing to pay their bills every month thanks to their businesses.
All of your comparisons are superficial, you can't just say starting a business and gambling are more or less the same, that kind of mentality is what pushes people to abandon their chances to start good businesses and spend all they have on gambling instead, telling themselves there are the same thing, if you owned your own business then you wouldn't have this mindset about owning a business and gambling being similar. This thinking pattern is flawed, it's better you change it.
I don't understand, why will anybody be comparing owning a genuine business and that of a gamble as the same, as a matter of fact this are two different things all together. Moreover, I can't see them connecting in anyway, therefore I disregard such statement or idea because I see no sense in it. However, gamble remain a gamble while business remain what it is. Sharing such information about these two can be very misleading especially for newbies that are just getting to know more about the game.
