I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to the concept of risk. I am currently planning to launch a real-world commercial business, and the deeper I get into the planning phase, the more I realize how many parallels it shares with gambling.
It made me wonder Is starting a business just a socially acceptable form of high-stakes gambling?
Here is how I see the comparison, and I’d love to get the community's perspective on this:
Risk Management vs. House Edge
In Gambling You calculate the odds, accept the house edge, and manage your bankroll to survive variance.
In Business You conduct market research, evaluate competitors, and manage your capital. However, instead of a house edge, you face market volatility, inflation, and changing consumer behavior.
The Illusion of Control
In Gambling Poker players rely on skill, but a bad beat can ruin a perfect strategy. Sports bettors analyze stats, but a single referee decision can spoil the bet.
In Business you can have the perfect business plan, the best suppliers, and great marketing, but an unexpected economic shift can completely wipe you out.
The Psychological Toll
Both require a specific mindset; the ability to handle financial stress, the discipline not to chase losses when a project fails, and knowing when to cut your losses.

For those of you who are experienced gamblers, investors, or entrepreneurs:
Do you look at business ventures through the same lens as a calculated bet?
Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?
Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have transitioned from gambling to running a business or vice versa!!!

Maybe you can build a business that is nothing but a gambling business if you think like that.
I myself have never thought like that, although indeed gambling is a business but I do not equate it.

If we want to open a business in the real world then do everything well as you said do market research for example, and others although this can be said to be the same as gambling but do not equate it. What I'm afraid of is that when you think like this then you have no progress. At least with you starting a business in the real world it is a good step.

I also think that going directly to a business in gambling without first having experience from a business in the real world is a wrong move. Nevertheless if you feel convinced that you know your way around or at least other people in business have advised you how to run any business including gambling online then you can definitely try it out. The problem is that if you intend to open a crypto casino for example you need to have a lot of money as starting balance otherwise you risk that some whale win outperforms your entire balance and your business fail.

The Psychological Toll
Both require a specific mindset; the ability to handle financial stress, the discipline not to chase losses when a project fails, and knowing when to cut your losses.
When there is economic shift, it always affects every sector of the economy including the normal business and the gambling you are looking at. gambling related business are quite profitable far more than the returns that comes to an individual gambler but the exposure to risk for both is entirely different.

you can start you business and still gamble. your affiliation to gambling should not stop you from starting a business and push you into gambling as a better alternative. there is profit in doing business and there is also real joy seeing that you are part of the solution to the problem of the society you are leaving in.

All of your comparisons are superficial, you can't just say starting a business and gambling are more or less the same, that kind of mentality is what pushes people to abandon their chances to start good businesses and spend all they have on gambling instead, telling themselves there are the same thing, if you owned your own business then you wouldn't have this mindset about owning a business and gambling being similar. This thinking pattern is flawed, it's better you change it.

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have transitioned from gambling to running a business or vice versa!!!

The concept is not entirely wrong, but there are just a couple of observations to be made between the two activities.
In a business, you bring your knowledge and professionalism to the table, and you also put yourself first and engage with people to help your business grow.
In gambling, even if you know the game, the odds, the matches, everything you want or can will be easily defeated by luck or bad luck, therefore very random.
In business you can do a business plan, could you do it for gambling too? I highly doubt.
The only thing that has in common but really little, is the risk factor, in both business and gambling you make your money available, but a "calculated" risk is always better than a "random" risk.

I have been writing for years that everything is gambling, and that life itself is one big gambol! Those parallels you saw are real, and I see them as well... simply said, when the outcome is uncertain, we need to give it a try, take the risks, and after that we can only hope for the best...

Where do you draw the line between a calculated entrepreneurial risk and pure gambling?

It's when skills can give you an edge, or you are just trying random stuff and hoping that luck will strike. That luck factor is important... I guess we all saw how people with skills didn't make it because they didn't have enough luck.

I wouldn't say they are superficial... if you strip everything down, all that's left is giving a try and taking a risk. Whatever you plan to do, there are chances for success and chances for failure... to see the outcome you need to give it a try, you need to risk something if you wish to win something, whatever that is. That's like a definition of gambling.

I’m a businessman and gambler at the same time but I was a gambler first before I start establishing my business during pandemic.

All I can say is Business is far different from gambling. There’s truly a risk on business but you can minimize it and you have full control on the success of your business unlike gambling that reliant on luck.

Business can be considered a high risk like gambling if you don’t know exactly you are entering without any feasibility study. So far, My business is consistently printing profit for already 6 years while I’m gambling using my earnings in the forum so everything is separated.

If you goal is for long term and there is a potential good cashflow and you think you are getting fun having a business. Go for it. But if your goal is to get entertained, spending money without assured to win, or lets say you have the talent to win in gambling and you are well skilled gambling is the ideal but for me, I do not consider gambling as a form of asset unlike having a business. Not all the time gambling gives a money instead more likely an expense and not a cashflow as an inflow to your banks and wallets like businesses.

Business is business and there is no time we can equate business to gamble as both are quite different and I wouldn't want to have that mindset that business is like a gambling. Of course you must have patient to nurture your business but you can't have patience to keep losing your bet. As a matter of fact, if you gamble for 1 year without winning you would feels so disappointed and you could likely stop gambling, but is not the same in business. In business you could face some challenges but when you endure for some weeks and you are known in that area you began to make sales. What matters in business is; right location, the right things to sell at that location. Have a business orientated mentality and also, be friendly to your customers then you are good to go.

Control is a clear cut line between these two, with business you get some levels of control you may not get while gambling, even as the control isn't in totality but you still have a better levels of it with your business than you would with gambling.  When you gamble, everything is on the table all at once but with business you can stop at some point when the economic environments isn't in your favour anymore and rechannnel resources to another line of action for profit, so the flexibility of strategy can always be an edge for you as a business person and here we don't consider luck as a factor to give attention to, even as it does help at some point but business is primarily based on actions and results.

Business provides you with certain flexibility gambling never will, if you aren't seeing the results you desire in business, you can always make adjustments almost immediately but gambling, once you place that bet, you loose control of the results, the house gets the whole edge thereafter.

In business you can take a risky lead and have poor people around you to help out then it might turn out bad. It takes gut to start off but it can never be compared to gambling because the latter needs you to put your money at risk with zero assets to get back at. In businesses you might have some property, inventory or resources that you have at the end even if it it is not fruitful.

Gambling should be done for entertainment like going on a tourism and attending some casino as part of the tour. Or have money at the end of month and you are feeling lucky to run the games.

It is easier to manage risk in business compared to gambling. Calculated risk in gambling is not up to 30% guarantee but in business on can aim high with a well calculated risk management and proper analysis. Business is far more better that way it will be easier to keep a certain percentage for gambling with strict money management policies and close performance check.

Business failed risk can be corrected much more easily than gambling failed risk. In gambling once a prediction fails everything goes but for business there must be somewhere to start from either with the goods left or with the connection built in the course of running the business.

Indeed right, because gambling and running a business is not even close or the same. If business does not run well they have those asset you have said to liquidate. But they have those skills and learning's also experience which they can use for the next business venture that they plan to build. While in gambling they engage on pure risk and once they start to be unlucky then their money lose on the games they played there's no turning back since its 100% gone.

With those risk mentioned involve its better to treat gambling as one of their option to have fun, or they can think about that this is just another alternative activity on which they can participate on their extra time and the money they spend is somehow what they can afford to lose.

Your business could be turn into gambling if you don't have a clear plan and only following the trend so you should have a target and learn the risks so you know where to start and not just following the trend. If you make a decision, that will be look as gambling as you don't know the result but you know the possibility that might happens.

You should make a detail plan running the business so you control the running and not gambling inside. Checking your business running from the progress so you know how good the business growth and what you need to do next according your plan.

What you say is true, in fact very true, but the risk factor is very similar, I'll give you a practical example, you study a business plan and the feasibility of a project (a restaurant for example) you take a loan to start your business by calculating everything perfectly, you want by chance (as was the case with Covid) you find yourself facing an unexpected event, or your place still doesn't carry the numbers you predicted, they are still very high risks, definitely calculable, definitely manageable, the risk is reduced compared to gambling but it is still real and NOT predictable.
On my personal case, I opened a company with another guy in 2015. He ended up leaving me alone to deal with expenses and everything, and I stayed to pay off the debts. I soon had a really nice janitorial session. I learned my lesson, but getting back up is really hard. After 10 years, I'm starting to breathe.
Paradoxically, gambling has never caused me financial damage (certainly I gamble prudently) but on the other hand it could not guarantee the livability of my family.

No business is guarantee to be successful in the long run but your commitment, sacrifice and patience can make it successful in the long run but in gambling no matter how pro you are or how hard you try to be successful, you cannot achieve progress because you will end up a loser in the long run.

Gambling and business isn't the same so, don't get it twisted because in everything you do, there must be risk management.

~
I wouldn't say, "socially acceptable", because I'm against opening an all-in business, especially by people under 30,  and I'm a part of the socium. The main reason why I'm against it is in this young age it's indeed like gambling. You simply can't take all the details into account because, at your age, there are many things you're simply not aware of. That's from my personal experience. Of course, there can be people who are super wise at 25.

No, not at all. Both are completely different, according to me. Gambling is all about luck. No matter how hard you try, if you're not lucky, you won't be able to make money. On the other hand, in business, hard work is what matters the most. Yes, luck plays a role, but if someone works really hard, they can often overcome bad luck.

There are plenty of examples in the world that prove hard work and smart work lead to success. So, I would definitely suggest that you start your own business. Just stay dedicated and do your work with honesty and commitment.

Running a business is a job, though.
You would be directly turning your time and effort (or the effort of others) into goods and services, that does not have so much in common with gambling, where there is no effort and work involved, just randomness and the house edge kicking in to guarantee profit for the house.

Not even mention that the whole point of starting a business is getting consistent money from the market, while within gambling consistency is pretty much almost impossible in the long term, so it is the opposite of gambling in that regard.

Starting and business can be compared to gamble only if the start-up of it is done recklessly and with no prior market research and knowing better ones product has demand on one's city, for example.
