Many people enter the bitcoin space with one goal in mind, making profit. Although there is nothing with that goal in mind, but i believe that one of the first things newcomers should learn is not how to buy bitcoin, but how to protect it.

A security mindset is the habit of thinking about risks before taking action. but it is quite unfortunate that many people start thinking about security after they are already lost funds to scammers, phishing websites fake giveaways or malware.

Therefore, before buying your first bitcoin it is important to understand that you are entering into a system where you are fully responsible of your funds, the bitcoin system is not like the traditional bank where we have customers support that can reverse transactions or recover stolen funds. ones your bitcoin is gone it is likely gone forever.

Secondly, understand what you are using, newbies do not download wallets or use exchanges without understanding the risks involved. therefore, learn the purpose of the wallet, backup phrase and the basic security before you start sending funds into the wallet.

Thirdly, do not trust information simply because you heard it on social media or it appears to be popular, always verify links, wallets addresses and the source of the information before taking action it is for your good.

Fourthly, scammers target everybody, but they often target beginners because they know that newbies will be eager to make quick profit. therefore, any investment platform promising guarantee of profit or secret investment opportunities should be avoided immediately.

Fifthly, protect your recovery seed phrase very important. When i first join the bitcoin space i lost the first bitcoin i bought to hold for long term, because i was not aware that there is a recovery seed phrase that needed to be written down and kept in a safe and secured place just in case. therefore, your recovery seed phrase is more important than your password and anyone who gain access to it can steal your bitcoin so never share it for the safety of your bitcoin investment.

Last but not lease, security is not a one time task, so think long term because it is an ongoing process. the security habit you develop today can protect you from losing years into the future. most people, especially newbies lose their bitcoin investments because they focus more buying and ignoring how to secure them.
Thank you for sharing your ideas on how to develop a security mindset in situations like this when planning to buy Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is not a physical thing people can ask to see before buying, buying a digital asset like Bitcoin need knowledge on how to keep it safely so that you don't lose the seed phrase that can give you the access to your Bitcoin.

If scammers can become sensible to be updating their tricks and scamming plans, Bitcoin investors have to update their strategies that will make them to keep their Bitcoin safe from attackers. Social media has become a place where scam attack can take place easily.
Transacting businesses online need extra carfulness to avoid the tricks scammers can use to trick investors to access their wallets.

Scammers can't know if you are a newbie until they send you a message and you reply to them and start taking interest. Then they realize you are new to this space, that's why you are talking to them. Some pros also do it for fun, but when they talk to them, sometimes they start to think that maybe the person is not a scammer because what he is asking me to do is not going to hurt me until it is too late.

In short, never talk to them. That's the first sign we give them that we are new to the space. So if they do not know who is a newbie until they talk with us, then how do they target beginners?

In short, they do not. They target everyone. My uncle lost his 120+ Pi tokens to an offer which was being advertised on Facebook. The offer was to enter the details in order to get 2x the amount you have in your wallet. In that form they asked for the seed phrase and he did not know how important a seed phrase is, and he just gave it up and the coins vanished from his wallet, and he could not do anything until he told me about it. He is the smartest guy. I learn from him, but he fell for that scam because he thought the site belonged to the original Pi team.

The problem with the new crops of newbies that have found their way to cryptocurrency and and to be precise bitcoin market they're newbies that are not willing to be enduring in learning, newbies without purpose and never ready to make independent research about just anything related to cryptocurrency but just only interest in coming in to making profit. Self custody is all about responsibility and you can't try to ignore that part and not get screwed.
If newbies try to focus only on the profit they can make from getting involved in Bitcoin and ignore the security that comes with self-custody, they will have to learn the hard way, and the responsibility of such a loss will fall on them and not on another person.
At least some of them have the opportunity to get an idea of everything, but they choose to neglect it and only realize how important that knowledge was when something like them losing access to their wallet and not being able to find a backup phrase saved anywhere happens.

They just have to learn the hard way. I do sometime think the best way to educate someone is to let them learn from their mistakes. Some people even after you try to teach them would still not be ready to put their learnings into play. Someone that's nee into the crypto market should have just two things in mind, storage and purpose. Purpose helps you grow a thick skin on why you should invest into that asset, in this case BTC. Some investors don't even know why, they just see that people are making profits and wants to also follow the crowd till it gets blurry.. the type to storage method you choose for your investment also determine how safe your asset will be on a long term. If you fail at these two points you have already failed your investment..

Not all of us need to learn the hard way, but most of us probably will. I’ve read so many stories about Bitcoin, how people lost access to their wallets, got scammed, or, more commonly, lost all their money through trading or greed. Personally, I started DCA, and I remind myself every day that patience is important. Even though some days I want to make impulsive decisions, I still try to control my emotions, regardless of how the price changes.

Another important thing is that I recently bought a cold wallet. I didn’t even know what a cold wallet was three months ago. But, as I said, after doing a lot of reading and research, I bought one and moved my sats to it. Even though I agree with you that most of us will learn the hard way, it’s better to be careful, especially now that buying and holding Bitcoin has become much easier.

They hardly even talk about the security the only thing you see newbies been concerned about is how they want to make profit and security matters knowing the measures to take they are not concerned about that and one way or the other they will learn the hard way because, people suffer because of ignorance when you when you don't have knowledge and when they start losing money they start complaining but sometimes learning the hard way actually helps because they will warn others and they will avoid it next time because experience is the best teacher.

And that is why knowledge is very important because because when you have the right knowledge a lot of things can be avoided and that way because when you know what you are doing you will hardly fall victim in the hands of scammers so the essence of the knowledge is for you to be able to avoid a lot of things, so it is just not about the profit the security is also something that really matter so calculating and also secure.

If a person is not patient or not able to hold it for a long time and if he sells his holding due to a market fall then it will not be sold for safety at all. The problem with safety will be when a person loses his holding due to his wrong decision due to lack of knowledge about wallet then it will be a problem with safety.

But yes we always have to keep the long term investment mentality, because Bitcoin is very risky in the short term and the possibility of losing your money is very high. So every person needs to keep the long term mentality. But in some cases it is heard that a person who is not buying and even if he buys, he buys in the short term will regret it after 5 years

This security of a thing is one of the reasons why a lot of people end up failing in their Bitcoin investments, because they lose and are unable to recover their wallet. Investors must be fully aware that Bitcoin gives them full control of their money and they must show a sign of responsibility for that . Even the experienced folks can also make mistakes if they weren't careful and cautious. We must be careful on what we click online because of scammers and hackers, we must try and write down our seed phrase in multiple places and must be kept safe away  from people. Practicing good security habits is what keeps investors safe from losing their Bitcoins.

It is certainly a good thing for a Newbie to be security conscious in other not to fall victim to scams. Understanding how bitcoin works will definitely help then to avoid making possible mistakes in the future.
There is need for a newbie to know how to secure there bitcoin in other for them not to be scam of it . Having knowledge of how to used wallets and also how to store there seed phrases and lots more to avoid making mistakes that will cost them a fortune.
The idea of making quick profit can also make some of the newbies to neglect some of the security tips that they know and they may end up being scam. Therefore, there is need for a newbie to understand that bitcoin is not were to make quick money.

Your own bank come with its own risk, which is the difference between centralisation and decentralisation, and anyone who wants to choose self-custody over custody service should be prepared to learn how to keep their own funds safe, as it's their own responsibility and not the responsibility of anyone. Another important the person's values is key will determine how secured the funds can be, writing and keep phrase in different location and safe from disappearing is one thing another thing is making sure it don't get into the wrong hand.

A little reordering, how to buy is the first thing to learn actually. You cannot convince me that you're learning how to protect  what you don't even know how to acquire.
What newbies should learn first is how to protect their bitcoin investment and not how to buy bitcoin. Buying bitcoin is very easy, but keeping it is the most difficult thing to do. Let's say you are  new to Bitcoin, and you want to start your Bitcoin investment journey with one Bitcoin because you have the funds, and after buying your first Bitcoin don't you think there are possibility of you losing it to hackers, Scammers, phishing attacks or even losing access to your wallet if you don't know how to protect your Bitcoin?

Such a mindset is certainly important for everyone, especially those just starting. But honestly, when I first started buying Bitcoin, I didn't think like that. I bought Bitcoin on an exchange and just left it there. Of course, what I did was wrong. But that was my experience when I first got to know Bitcoin.
Now, more and more people surely understand the importance of keeping their assets secure. No one wants to lose the investment assets they've built.

Learning about self custody or top tier security is something that people or newbies can also learn while they’ve started their accumulation journey. There are some basic things that are a must have in every newbie investor’s bag pack before they get started in their journey, and as good and crucial as max security is (not disputing that face) it’s actually not one of them. So far, the safest wallet for storing bitcoin is the hardware wallet, so are you in anyway saying that every newbie must first of all learn and acquire this wallet before they can start accumulating? I don’t know but that doesn’t really sound so right to me.

Different safe location should be the emphasis in my own perspective other than a random different location. One might carelessly keep a backup phrase at a location where it get seen by a random person and the coin get sent to a different address. Taking responsibility of our asset comes with its own huge responsibility. One has to have proper knowledge of what it means to stay secure and protective. A careless person might fall victim of theft or losing their key if they don't improve on their weakness.

It's the best but firstly, people must learn and are aware of security importance. Next, they must have good security practice for their initial wallet, the main device. After that, they can apply same good security practice for their wallet backups at the second or third locations.

As if they have bad security practice, if they store wallet backups at different locations in unsafe ways, that only makes their practice more terrible, not better as it should be.

The security review every serious Bitcoiners should do in 2026. It's a good article with a lot of recommendations on security but people don't have to do all these things at start. They can learn, practice and improve their practice for better security with time.

Some people don't want to settle down to learn it very well before storing plenty coins on the wallets, because when you get it right to know how to apply quality wallet to hodl BTC for long years and you will not have a single fear and you will be bodl to hodl amount of BTC for long years to achieve your heart desire. Many people have made mistakes in the past and they have learned their lesson which it will never repeat itself again in the future, and they are enjoying quality wallet to hodl their coins.

All you need to do is to write all your seeds phrase in a secret place in case something happens in the future it will be easy for you to locate where you write them to recover your coins, but if you save your seeds phrase in a wrong please it will be hard for you to recover your coins.

Well they have different way to learn so others learn and gain experience through reading and watching and others learned through experience but sometimes they are still learned from these mistakes instead they need to experience in the harder way that will mark in their mind and become never forgot that its part of their journey. Good thing that you have a self control and does not make sudden decision usually if you have a limited budget.

Another important thing is that I recently bought a cold wallet. I didn’t even know what a cold wallet was three months ago. But, as I said, after doing a lot of reading and research, I bought one and moved my sats to it.

Glad to see that new investors focus with the security of their wallet than using an exchange as their wallet, seems you focuses with the long term investment DCA strategy with the bitcoin.

Fourthly, scammers target everybody, but they often target beginners because they know that newbies will be eager to make quick profit. therefore, any investment platform promising guarantee of profit or secret investment opportunities should be avoided immediately.
Beginners are more vulnerable to scammers not basically because of their eagerness to make quick profit but because they lack sufficient knowledge about the crypto space.Scammers can deceive beginners by convincing them with misleading information and when they believe it they become more vulnerable and their wallet at the end may get compromised. It’s crucial to understand the basic knowledge in regards to security because your security is your priority in this space. Then again, even most experienced bitcoiners fall victim to scam because of their eagerness to make quick profit so it’s not only restricted to newbies and lastly always avoid those projects that promises unimaginable returns because it’s from those platforms ones account can get compromised.

If newbies try to focus only on the profit they can make from getting involved in Bitcoin and ignore the security that comes with self-custody, they will have to learn the hard way, and the responsibility of such a loss will fall on them and not on another person.
Newbies are now focusing on the profits that they are going to make, and they don’t even care to learn about bitcoin. Thats the reason why most of them do end up losing their bitcoin at the end and they going to tag bitcoin to be scam. If you want to make money from something, you should take your time to learn about it don’t be so desperate to make money. After acquiring the right knowledge then you can start thinking about profits.

Some newbies are being deceived by what they see on social media, they just see people posting it on social media that they are making money from bitcoin investment, and they are also in rush to make money also, you don’t have to believe everything you see on social media because most of it is just fake.
