S21 Amlogic FR-1.12(251009-S21) - firmware unlock needed?

Hi,

I'm trying to install LuxOS, Braiins or VNish on an Antminer S21 with an Amlogic control board.

Current firmware:
FR-1.12(251009-S21)

What I've already tried:

LuxOS Commander → "Unable to connect to miner"
Braiins Toolbox detects the miner as:
Antminer S21
Bitmain Stock
Installable
but installation does not start
VNish / Hashcore Toolkit:
detects the miner
error: "create ssh client"

Recovery attempts:

Downloaded S21-aml-flashcard.zip
FAT32 formatted media
Files extracted to the root directory:
aml_sdc_burn
aml_sdc_burn.UBOOT.ENC
aml_upgrade_package_enc
SECURE_BOOT_SET
Tried both 64GB microSD and 1GB USB flash drive
USB activity LED flashes during boot, so the miner appears to read the media
Recovery never starts and firmware remains unchanged

Questions:

Does FR-1.12(251009-S21) block SD/flashcard recovery?
Is an AML Unlock procedure required for this firmware?
Has anyone successfully installed LuxOS, Braiins or VNish on this exact firmware version?
Is SSH disabled by default on FR-1.12(251009-S21), causing the "create ssh client" error?

Any confirmed procedure would be greatly appreciated.

Try one solution instead of three. VNish has excellent tech support; if you message them on Telegram, they usually respond within a few hours or less.

Your firmware is dated November 20, 2025.

Amlogic control boards with firmware from September 2025 or later cannot be flashed using an SD image. You must unlock the USB port according to the instructions.

SSH is completely disabled. This is why VNish and Hashcore Toolkit return an error when creating an SSH client.

If the above method does not work or you can't able to downgrade the control board, then you don't have any other choice but to replace the control board with an older one so that you can downgrade and flash it with custom firmware.

The other control board is the one that philipma1957 usually mentions here, called the ePIC universal control board, which is way better.

I'm sure that this is working out of the box, I have a friend with armlogic c76 control board and it's working but he doesn't like it, he is someone like you who want to try something new so he went ePic Universal and things got better from there on, still up and running till date, I think you have no choice than to change the control board if you want to expand the experience.

If you have a computer and you can follow instruction carefully then it's not hard to unlock the USB port using the link that FP91G dropped above, just be extremely careful, you don't want to end up with a dead control board, remember, thread carefully.

Still, I believe it's better if you can keep mining for now and get some money later for a control board like ePic, I'm worried that you can do something wrong unlocking that USB port.

If you brick your original board, you now know what to do Try it, many miners succeed in doing it the first time.
