There is no criteria that states about participating in the world cup should be determined by a nation's size and population.

Cape Verde is an island nation in Africa which could be as small as Curacao in size  but they are also participating in the world cup on competing in the qualifiers group stage and  qualified by beating the rest teams in their group and meeting the points.

Football, like any other game, depends on the professionalism of the players, coaches, and other team members, but sometimes chance intervenes, and teams no one bet on make it to the World Cup. I'm not too surprised by this, and I think if they're playing here now, they deserve it. Other teams had chances, too, but luck wasn't on their side. Maybe they'll have more luck next time. Like you mentioned, some big countries aren't there, that shows that they were not qualified to play in the world cup. This question of yours is actually funny and if i may ask, are they not a country?, who participated in the the qualifying games and qualified irrespective of how small the country is, you are sounding as if they qualified by mistake or they were just added by FIFA, if you look carefully you will also see Cape Verde that's a small Island is also in the world cup, so it doesn't matter the country size the most important thing is that they meet the requirements to qualify for the world cup and they should be allowed to enjoy the moment because it's not easy to qualify for world cup.
