Do gamblers only learn discipline after losing badly?

It happened to me many times too. There were many times when I lost control in gambling and lost everything. It even reached the point where I decided to quit gambling for good, but the next morning I realized it was just because of high emotions and regret from my wrong decisions.

So until now, I am still gambling. Despite what happened in the past, I still continue even if I really lost money from it. The only thing I really do not want to happen to me is to become bankrupt and homeless. That is probably the worst experience an irresponsible gambler could reach. I hope we are all safe from that possibility.

I don't know if I've ever experienced that, because I've only experienced it in physical gambling, and when I'm gambling, all I ever think about is maybe I'll get lucky and win.
But the opposite happens when I'm actually playing the game.

But I do believe that gamblers should have discipline so that they or we can control ourselves in the winning and losing that we can experience.

Unfortunately the toughest lessons in life are taught through experience, and it's the only time people can reflect and see their mistakes, otherwise people winning are usually blinded and stubborn thinking this rum will go on forever not until the losses start piling up..

But again everyone is told all these stories of people losing money, but I guess the problem is people think they are better than the next guy which is why they always fall in this trap.. and this will forever be an ongoing issue as we humans are stubborn by DNA

Not all gamblers will do the same.  Imo although all gamblers must have their own experiences but that does not mean we all learn from the mistakes that have been made.

The fact is that today there are still a lot of gamblers who don't even learn from past mistakes and still continue to force gambling even though in that session they are unlucky but because they never learn and remember past mistakes when they gamble, the pattern of losing and spending money will look the same. There are many types of gamblers that exist today but when it comes to statistics although there is no exact data but I feel that there are still more gamblers who do not learn from past mistakes compared to gamblers who always try to evaluate mistakes and make them as lessons.

We suppose to learn from our mistakes, from our losses, but that is a hard lesson to learn because random factor is involved. Not a rare case when person lose and lack of discipline is not the reason of that loss. What a person will learn in that way? What if that "know where to stop" was not the one that helped to stop or that last win or loss was due to randomness? Disciple factor imho should world when gambler makes deposit. After that he must enjoy moment and play until he finds it enough or runs out of balance. Discipline is when you dont make another deposit.

I’m sure most gamblers will learn discipline after experiencing a major loss or significant financial setback although some do establish discipline from the start though these are few and far between. It’s also possible for someone to start out disciplined but then forget that discipline once they start gambling.

Very few people actually gamble with discipline from the start, because it requires self-control and not many people are able to control themselves that well.

Pretty much for years there has been a lot of gamblers that tell themselves that stuff like "I will stop if I hit my limit" but that limit only ever existed in their heads I guess and not taking an actual action. Well, there has been a time or something eerily similar to myself that if I started losing I'd just keep chasing it thinking the next one would fix it, and when I'm up I wasn't thinking about stopping either, just figured why would I stop when it's working. Bad decisions after bad decisions coming next for that.

It very difficult for gamblers who atleast wins small amounts of money from the bets they have staked and don't think about self control and discipline so long they are getting little money, they tend to forget what they loose and concentrate on the little winnings that's coming, I agree with you that the gamblers only have that mentality or thoughts of gambling wisely in their heads and don't apply it in their gambling sessions.

One reason why some gamblers finds it difficult to discipline themselves is due to greed and having the thoughts that if they chase their looses they will win and recover the money they have lost, that keeps you open to more losses because you can never win to recover what has been lost, the most important thing to do is to quit for awhile if you consistently encounter looses. From past experience gamblers learn to discipline themselves from heavy loose, they never gamble with caution when they haven't lost.

Not just gambler in life there are people that don't learn from others mistakes. They want to make the mistake before they can learn, they believe that experience is the best teacher but this is Very wrong . In gambling some gambler will only begin to exercise self discipline after they have encountered series of loses. So they choose to learn the hard way and this is very bad.

I can't tell for sure because in my case I got burned very early and I think that it marked me from practically the beginning. That's why although I always set limits and although I always put myself in the worst for what could happen, I don't know if it's a characteristic trait of my personality, or if it's just because of those early experiences.

That valuable lesson comes from past mistakes, which become experiences that help a person improve. However, those experiences do not guarantee that someone will become better; it ultimately depends on each individual's mindset.

A person who thinks maturely and has a wise mindset may, after suffering many gambling losses and chasing those losses, eventually realize that they have been gambling irresponsibly. As a result, they may start gambling with better self control and discipline. On the other hand, there are gamblers who experience several losses but ignore those lessons. Instead, they become more emotional and act as if they want revenge against gambling itself, continuing to gamble without any limits or self restraint.

Honestly I think this applies to practically everything. Reading the news on how some people lose their wallets because they store their seed phrase on cloud storage, not having multiple backups and just write the phrase on random paper, clicking random links and installing fake aps, and so on. Hard to believe they never heard about crypto hacks before, especially if they've been holding some decent amount of money in crypto. I guess in gambling the punishing aspect is directly linked to how you strategize for the future.

Of course, we are all not saints; many of us went through the lessons of losing a lot of money, but after that we were very angry at our lack of restraint and powerlessness to cope with the excitement of games. I experienced this at the very first steps when I got acquainted with gambling, and watching my friends win, I got angry and wished for a repeat of their luck, thereby losing not only the planned money but also more. Once I lost a lot, I just made a condition to myself that if I couldn't cope with my emotions, I would completely abandon this entertainment. which happens in my company from time to time.

Honestly, I learned my lesson the hard way, too. Also, I know what to do, but sometimes it's just me being stubborn to keep on going and expect that one day I might get it all back, but it didn't. Which is why it led me to stop playing slots and save some money by just focusing on sports betting.
Now that the NBA is done for this season, the expense in sports betting will be less for me. There's the WNBA, but the games are fewer than those in the NBA during the season. Still, I love doing this, and I don't get frustrated much, even if I lose, unlike back then when I played slots.
But truly, discipline mostly comes from bad experiences and perhaps the amount lost by a gambler.

In fact, it's best to learn this discipline before gambling and establish it with a clear goal in mind to avoid bad or excessive gambling behavior that can lead to addiction and significant losses. A disciplined gambler will be able to gamble with good self-control, avoiding bad behavior that can trap them in a vicious cycle of loss. Having said it very sincerely, I personally only became acquainted with discipline after having had disappointments and having lost a lot of nonsense.
Unfortunately, even though I've read some useful rules in the past to avoid damaging my economy, I haven't even considered the risk factor, thinking I'm invincible and capable of managing everything. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Unfortunately, when you come up against reality, you will see that money is actually lost and that everything you think you know is of little use

Yesterday I bet on Brazil to win and lost $5. Since the game ended in a draw, I lost. But I wasn't sad about that loss. I don't chase losses, and I'm not going to give up my real-world possessions because of that loss. That's because I only see gambling as a form of entertainment, nothing more than that. When people take gambling too seriously, they tend to always chase losses, and because of that, they lose everything in life—family, possessions, and all the money they had. So it's always good for people to gamble in moderation and view gambling only as entertainment.

Experience is the best teacher after all and for some people until something actually happens to them they will never really understand what it truly means, they know to control their gambling, they know they shouldn't push beyond their limits but they somehow still choose to believe they are bigger than those factors, this is until reality hits them and they see their losses right in front of them, this is when some of them finally understand control.

The truth is most people only really understand what discipline means after losing a lot of money. Before taking a big loss, all the tips and advice just don't feel that important.
But once a big loss actually happens, everything suddenly makes sense and that is when people finally realize how important discipline really is. That's what really teaches people to play more carefully.

I recently had an incident in my life that shocked me a little, the fact is that I have been visiting a Barbershop for a long time, where a great guy cuts my hair, we communicate with him constantly and have known each other for 1000 years. He once told me that he likes betting, but he always keeps himself under control, and recently he called me and asked me to lend him about 50 bucks, and I want to say that I can't even call him my friend, because he's my buddy, we've never talked outside of Barbershop . And it turns out that he lost a lot in betting, and now he was trying to borrow money from everyone, and that's why I stopped visiting him. After all, such an act is strange in my opinion.

Usually people learn from mistakes in life because this brings problems and also ways in life to have discipline, but it's not for all because many have good strategies in their lives. This brings good success, and they stay with this gambling. It is always chaotic because this has never been easy to stay on the same level.

Wins bring better results, losses hurt badly, and also increase problems, but having discipline always keeps things in balance, which is helpful and brings a better chance of staying positive. Wins and losses are always part of the game and life, but after having losses, still doing things the right way has never been easy because financial control disrupts and this brings chaotic situations.
