This news was reported by Sahararwporters. A review of Nigeria's foreign trade data has revealed that Nigerians spent N20.4 billion on the importation of umbrellas, sunshades, headgear, footwear, whips and related products within the first three months of 2026. The figure was obtained from the Foreign Trade Statistics report for the first quarter of 2026 released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and reviewed by SaharaReporters. According to the report, the expenditure covered imports classified under categories including Headgears, Sunshades, Umbrellas, Whips, Footwears and other unspecified products. Here is the link to the news :Nigeria Spends N20.4billion To Import Umbrellas, Sunshades, Footwear, Others In Three Months , more details : https://www.beloud.com/news/135411028I think this is the reason why we still remain underdeveloped, and so much dependent on other nations to survive. Our leaders have failed to embrace industrialization, and the things we are surpose to be manufacturing here in Nigeria, we spend so much money to import them. If these items are produced here in Nigeria, we can still export them to make money. For instance, before now, China was not industrialized , but someone changed the system, and today they are now the world's business hub. If we have leaders who are visionary, Nigeria can equally attain this hight, but is so unfortunate that people who are meant to develop the country even carry our wealth to foreign countries to develop them, instead of developing our country Nigeria.

Are you telling me that if Nigerian government was serious about the well-being and development of the country they would spend such amount to import things that can easily be made here, we have different markets in this country that will produce all they have larvish N20.4 billion on, for example if samples of what they want is given to the onitsha or Ariaria producers in Aba, Abia State. Those things will be produced perfectly, the government should try and invest in this country and it's economy so the Youths will have work to do than spending billions abroad. Nigeria is a semi industrial country, it only requires the right people with the vision to take over power and invest in the manufacturing industry in Nigeria. Our leaders are only concerned about their personal interest and how to embezzle public funds and don't care about developing the country.

Am not surprised at the statistics because nothing serious is produced locally in Nigeria, the country literally survives on importation and it is really alarming, sadly the government isn’t taking any step to change the narrative, the Nigerian government has failed to develop its locally made products, they have also failed to accept locally made products they prefer foreign products over the locally made once so how then won’t they be spending so much of money on importation. See most countries that chose to depend on their locally made products are doing so well currently, some have even started exporting their locally made products out to other countries, i just wish Nigeria will have a leader that will have the vision to revive the industrial sector of the country only then can develop come.

Look how our leaders are wasting money on produts we can produce in our country. If you go Aba, all those items are been produced by local manufacturers in the market. instead of the government to invest in our local manufacturing companies, they prefer to invest in those foreign companies making them and their country richer and more developed. If that 20.4bn was invested in our country, our economy and local production wil improve, and they will be employment for our youths. If Government should patronised Made in Nigeria products it will truly go a long away for our economy, positively.
