I am new here. I have seen many threads here which are locked. Now my question is why are the threads locked? Why shouldn't they be kept open for further comments in the future?

Threads can be locked by the OP or a moderator.   As to the question of why - you'll need to ask the OP of the post in question.

The main reason is because the threads do not need further replies. Most threads are longer than they should be most of the time, but they are just kept opened.

Threads can be locked by the OP or a moderator.   As to the question of why - you'll need to ask the OP of the post in question.
Why aren't these left open for future comments?

You said moderators can also lock threads. So how do I know if a locked thread was locked by the OP or by a moderator?

Threads are locked if the main purpose of opening a thread is fulfilled. Because it is then advisable to avoid further spam by locking the thread. If you have got the answer to your question and if you are satisfied with it, then it is better to lock the thread. This ensures that no unnecessary answers are re-posted on old posts in the future.

You said moderators can also lock threads. So how do I know if a locked thread was locked by the OP or by a moderator?
You can find out by reading my post whether the locked threads were locked by the OP himself or by the moderator.

Note: If you have received a satisfactory answer to your question, you can lock the thread to avoid further spam.

Just point to the padlock icon on the thread (top left of the "author"), and the lock information will be there.
For example, this thread is locked by the OP http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5585466.0
or this thread is locked by the mod http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5067921.0

If threads are useless, they can be either trashed or locked.
Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ.
1. No zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads. [1][e]
Depending on moderators who trashed or locked threads, they can leave a note on reason of their moderation actions.

Examples

This topic has been moved to Trashcan.

Reason: As asked by OP

This topic has been moved to Trashcan.

Reason: Low quality

Besides the reasons mentioned, some users will lock their own threads when they are not very receptive to the feedback they have gotten or are expecting to get. Self-moderating a thread is probably more common when someone wants to limit discussion on a subject.

It’s sometimes frustrating to come across a topic where relevant answers can still be made and it happens to be locked. You can always create a new topic or look for a similar one to make your comment.

For the gambling discussion section the responsible mods tend to lock topics after they get over 6 pages long. It has happened to me too, only rarely discussion topics in that section will stay open for longer. It must be related to an incident that remains unresolved or an ongoing event to remain open more.

There's new topics everyday and people sometimes don't look at the date of the OP before responding so I think it's better this way.

I am new here. I have seen many threads here which are locked. Now my question is why are the threads locked? Why shouldn't they be kept open for further comments in the future?

If no further discussion is needed or when OP (original poster) thinks he has got sufficient answers or the answer he wanted or when mod thinks it is needed, as keeping it unlocked can create spam, then they can choose to lock it. It's up to two persons', either the OP or the mod. Moreover when there is a lending post, sell post, or note to self, or some other post that doesn't require 3rd persons opinion, they can lock the thread. Afaik, there is no special rule regarding locking or unlocking threads, it's sole based on "Need". Also if you think a topic is not relevant to the date, you may lock it, and when the time comes with new info, you can again unlock it, add that info, and revive the discussion, or you can keep it forever unlocked.. totally depends on you. Hopefully you have got the idea of it...

Hover your mouse over the little padlock icon while the topic is open - if the alt text says "Locked by a moderator", then a mod locked it. If it says "Locked by the topic-starter", the OP locked it.

There can be various reasons behind locking threads in forums. Sometimes, when the OP (who created the thread) gets the desired answer or feels that the discussion is complete, he locks the thread, so that unnecessary comments or spam are not posted later. In some cases, moderators can also lock threads to stop rule violations, duplicate topics, and off-topic discussions. Of course, not all threads are locked. Topics that may require new information, updates, or constructive discussion in the future are usually left open. So if you see a thread locked, it's not necessarily for a bad reason, but sometimes it's just a way to end the discussion in a respectful manner.

You forgot one more reason.

If a thread was locked by the OP, there is another reason such as scam accusation and the OP does not want to handle scam accusations from community. He can lock it, and create a new thread, this time will be self-moderated. Or he can simply lock that thread and make a scam exit.

But if threads locked by moderators, above reasons are very possible.
