whenever i participate in these games and rounds section contests, like this for ex.

and i click on a link or the image containing the link it opens in the same tab

which i find to be annoying tbh, now i know i can just hold the ctrl key and it opens a new tab when i click on it

but shouldn't this be done automatically? i think it should..

at-least for different websites?

thoughts?

im on latest edge on windows 10 btw

This Isn't actually an issue instead it's basically just a personal preference. If you look on the negative side of what you are saying then that means for the average person that's constantly surfing you'll have over 30 tabs literally around every 15 minutes and personally I find too many tabs annoying.

Auto opening taba show be for special commands not basically average surfing because having too many open tabs is really messy. Just use the right click or Ctrl button on your keyboard.

You can configure your web browser settings and it's can be done by user side with that simple customization setting.

Which is the web browser you are using?

Opening a new tab when you click on a link it's better if you are redirected on the same website and not to different website, it may be cool for you but it's not safe sometimes if you are going to another page you have no idea. I don't know if you have experience this before, you can get attack with annoying ads repeatedly. I used Adblocker because of this.

This isn't about operating system, it's configuration, you can use this extension Bitcointalk Extension - All In One - Update V3 , by default it open a new tab when you click on an external links.

This feature was removed due to security issues.

Previously, user-generated links would often open in a new window/tab. However, kcud_dab found out that there are security issues with this, so I removed it. You'll have to middle-click links if you want them to open in a new tab.

If people find this disruptive, I could add rel=noreferrer to some of the target=_blank links, but then referrer info would never be sent, which might be undesirable.

I was thinking the same thing before. To be fair, that's how it was described in the SMF Bulletin Board Code:

Quote
NB the 'url' tag opens in a new window, but you can type 'iurl' tags to open in the same window.
The example link even has the target="_blank" attribute (inspect page to check), which makes it open in a new tab. I first noticed this when I was testing the [url] tag here.

This feature was removed due to security issues.

So that's how it is. I was so confused as to why it wasn't working as intended. Grin

There is a normal workaround for that if you're on a desktop and use a mouse, simply click on the link you want opened on a new tab with the mouse scroll button instead of the left or right clicking. It works Grin,  and should give you more flexibility to decide the link you want on a new tab

I had a similar question, but I searched the forum and understood that it was among the security fixes after the forum was hacked.

Theymos was reluctant of linking out of the forum.

I also think this would be a great addition. I have found it annoying to click on links and after browsing
for a few minutes or longer its either difficult to backtrack from a few pages deep in the new site or I
end up closing the window and reopen Bitcointalk again.

Simple: Open links in a new tab, when finished on those visited links just close them and Bitcointalk
is still there where you exited from.

I would hazard a guess that most people use their smartphones these days to access the site.

It opens a new page because they added ‘target_blank’ [hope the link explains better].You quoted the reason why it was removed though, it has a security issue by default then  but it’s been resolved now yet you never know , someone can still decide not to update the old versions.

It’s easy to open link on new tabs using smartphones too.. just hold and a small window will pop up where you can select to open on a new tab.

I also think this would be a great addition. I have found it annoying to click on links and after browsing
for a few minutes or longer its either difficult to backtrack from a few pages deep in the new site or I
end up closing the window and reopen Bitcointalk again.
That's why you have a back button and a browser history toggle menu. I for example can surf for hours without posting a single thing saying new tabs should open all the time is saying you wanna mess up my browser window with hundreds of tabs every hour. Someone already pointed the main reason it isn't like that.

Well come to think of it, images don't really preview if you are in the type box page on the forum that took should be to also avoid another security flaw.

I do a lot of multi tasking and I guess many of us do and we don't want many tabs open and sometimes we forgot to close the tabs and this will slow down our machine.
Since Theymos take it out because of security reason we should make it a habit of highlighting and right clicking the link to open in a new tab.

This Isn't actually an issue instead it's basically just a personal preference.

Or a task purpose.   If I want to guarantee I look at all the links, I'll open in a new tab.  If I'm just browsing, I'll use the back button.   Chrome (and other browsers) make it simple to switch your profile from tabbed to non, or you can right click on any link to select on the spot.
