Yes, absolutely, of course you can do it. If you're in an environment where your friends are football fanatics, it's a fact that you'll feel like betting and you'll bet on the team you like the most. What's more, you won't even bet on the one you did best in school, but if you don't know anything about football, the atmosphere itself will give you that desire to bet. That's how it is.

I actually get to understand that the reverse is the case here. Gambling is what actually makes most persons to start watching football and not really that watching football makes them to become a gambler. Many people are already deeply involved in sports or football gambling without getting to watch football for the first time, but they have been gambling with most football clubs which they haven’t watched playing football but due to some hype around the team and how they have been performing recently getting good results they  probably want to stake a bet with them. Personally, before I started watching football matches I already heard about most of the football teams and placed a bet on them.

I could say that anyone gambling without having idea about the team they are betting for or have watched their matches  in the past are gambling blindly because most of such bet do cut because of the bettors  inability to run a proper analysis as they don't watch matching often.

...

Now, can we say watching football increase the chance of becoming a gambler?

I think following football and watching many matches can actually make people to try out gambling and betting for the first time.
It is not only about having team members and advertisement within the stadium which directly redirects to betting platforms (which are direct sponsor of those games). It is also about the fact some people realize they could have won money but they didn't.

Let us assume some football fan walked into the stadium and saw that advertisement, but did not pay attention to it. He was sure his favorite team was to win because he was much faith in their skills and abilities. He ends up being correct and he celebrates their victory, then he realizes he could have won much money had he signed up and bet his money on the platform which sponsors his team.

So he is now very tempted to join in and stake his money for the next match. That is pretty much how it works and why it has become to effective to have betting advertisement during football matches.

Yes. I think it can.

There can be the perspective of betting for the team every time a person watches the game. It's not just about the advertisements of gambling platforms but the sport itself. I have been a viewer of the sport that I love, which is basketball, and every time I just watch the game, there's always something missing. It's the bet that is missing. It lacks the added spice of making the game more entertaining because you are simply watching the game.
I believe there are things that can be more enjoyable when we add some bet to it, and even when I was young, playing basketball on the street, when there's no bet placed, the game is less competitive.

Watching the games and the opportunity to make money from them does creep into the mind on seeing the advertisements. Along with that the pirated streams push the gambling ads as well. If you are resistant to this type of advertising, which is not the normal thing, then it is common to visit one of these sites and check them out. Eventually drawing the players in to gambling.

So if you are strictly into watching the game you would not get distracted by these topics but most people will. Good for the casino owners, more money to them and their investors.

Yes, watching football increases the chances of becoming a gambler. But naturally not everyone. When gambling site advertisements come up repeatedly while watching the game and when the name of a gambling company is seen on the jersey of their favorite club, they can enter the gambling sites out of curiosity. I don't think it's impossible. And gambling sites spend a lot of money to show the names or advertisements of their gambling companies on the jersey. Do you think they spend all this money? Of course, these advertisements increase the number of users on their sites. However, as I said before, this effect of advertising will not affect those who are mainly busy just enjoying the game. But for those who think of making quick money and having friends play, the advertisements will affect them more.

I believe that whoever is interested in gambling online, would find gambling websites, irrespective of whether they watch football or not. But yeah, these corporations want to further their reach: the more people that get exposed to their adverts and sponsorship, the greater the chances of a constant growth in their customer base.

There are a lot of people who watch football, but do not gamble. So, it is not all about what the gambling platforms do to promote themselves; people also have to take responsibility for their actions too. And if you gamble, you should be bold enough to admit that you did so because you wanted to, and not because you were inundated with gambling ads and sponsorship.

Yes offcurse. It can make someone to start engaging in gambling activities over time no two ways about it. Using myself as a cse study, all my life I never like gambling not until I started getting involve in watching matches through some of my very close friends that normally took me out doing the weekend and that was how the whole thing started. Once someone has started engaging in watching matches, their is every possibilities of the person becoming a gambling and that's the fact.

The fact that approximately 50% of football clubs are sponsored by gambling companies has been used by many analysts to fuel conspiracy theories that most matches, even in major leagues, are fixed or, as they put it, "scripted." This, they argue, means that the game generally follows a predetermined scenario. This is highly debatable, but statistics can often lead to such conclusions.
Furthermore, such a large number of casino and bookmaker sponsors could indeed encourage gambling.

Personally, I don't think shirt sponsors alone make people to gamble but repeated exposure builds brand recognition and people may be triggered to try it out.

Nah, those shirt printed ads alone can actually make people try gambling. If it didn't, these wouldn't have become a thing these days, but instead, a lot of companies have followed this advertising strategy. Those repeated exposures happen because almost all of the established platforms and those who have massive capital in the gambling business, find it very effective and are prioritizing this kind of sponsorship or endorsement.
In fact, you will not only see these printed ads in their uniform, but also everywhere in the court, such as on the floor, on the sidelines, and even on the Jumbotron. The fact that we can see these kinds of advertisements more often than before means it is effective, and yeah, to answer your question, a big YES, not only in football, but watching any sports can push people into gambling.

Watching football can push people into gambling because most sports fans have teams that they are supporting to win in every games and depending on how strongly a football fan feels about a team winning they might not mind to stake some money on it. Then these bet companies are making that choice easy by showing them their adverts and all you have to do as a gambler is simply register on their site and begin to bet. Aside from sponsoring teams in top leagues bet adverts are pretty much everywhere staring you in the face on billboards and social media, I even see bet adverts on bank apps.

Of course, such advertising has an impact (like any other advertising) on people. So, yes, this advertising can contribute to the emergence of interest in gambling. The question is, to what extent is advertising on T-shirts effective? Only the advertisers have access to such statistical data, which is not publicly available. Nevertheless, it can be inferred that this form of advertising is effective, as the gambling industry consistently utilizes it.

I came across an interesting statistics and decided to visualise it in info graph. It was the Premier League last season 2025/2026 front of shirt sponsors.

Out of 20 clubs that played in the Premier League, 10 clubs (i.e 50%) have a gambling company as their main shirt sponsor. While the remaining 10 clubs fall under airlines, finance, technology, tourism etc.

We all know football is the most watched sport in many parts of the world. During the season, millions of people watch Premier league matches every weekend on TV and other streaming platforms. It doesn't matter the club you support, you are constantly exposed to gambling brands printed on the jersey. Even people who have never bet before become familiar with names like Stake, Betano, W88, Debet etc through repeated exposure.

Personally, I don't think shirt sponsors alone make people to gamble but repeated exposure builds brand recognition and people may be triggered to try it out.

Now, can we say watching football increase the chance of becoming a gambler?
NO it doesn't! I don't for once feel like that's the case. Yeah you might be seeing these brands and ads, but if it is something that you're interested in or that you feel will help solve a problem, then I don't think one can start gambling through this means.

Repeated exposure can create a kinda influence, but it won't be like it is what prompted you to start gambling. Even with ads, if you don't see any need for the product, you won't use it. For instance, a lady won't be interested in beard cream  Cheesy

In essence: without desire, continuous exposure or ads won't really influence you much, but it will just create some level of awareness on that product.

Not only about football but sports are now synonymous with gambling and we cannot deny this.
But whether it will push us to gambling I don't think so because this depends on the control of each one and when there is a gambler even if we don't see a soccer match or other sports when they want to gamble then they can do it anytime and anywhere so the urge to see soccer with gambling I think it depends on the gambler himself.

Sports are universal entertainment regardless of gamblers or not all can watch and for gambling intentions it comes back to yourself because the urge to gamble does not only depend on the spectacle we see but the urge from ourselves to continue gambling even if we don't watch the sport.

I think it's all about the marketing and how often people get attracted to those ads.
It doesn't necessarily have to be football alone but any popular sports that gains huge crowd to watch the match.
As these gambling sites get promoted, people usually get attracted to these sites and start gambling eventually.
So yeah, it does push people to gamble.

If there was no gambling sponsorship involved, I'd think that only a small proportion of people would seek these sites out and it'd likely be through some kind of competition rivalry where one player tells a friend. This would keep "adoption" of such sites quite low and limit the steady stream of new users they need to stay highly profitable. As you point out, gambling seems to be everywhere when it comes to certain sports and football is the most played sport in the world. It creates a lot of role model figures and when they are all plastered with adverts for betting sites it really does send the wrong message, especially to the younger generation. The only problem is it helps to prop up the ridiculously high salaries that these players have come to expect and demand.

Anything can make anyone to be gambling, as long as you have a knowledge about football and I don’t think it’s only football, if you have knowledge about different sports, there is a tendency that you will be pushed in gambling which might be a common practice when you have knowledge about football or another sports, but however it’s doesn’t have any guarantee that you will be successful with your gambling when you have a knowledge of a particular sport, I think a good gambler is someone who knows how to gamble responsibly.

Now, can we say watching football increase the chance of becoming a gambler?
Yes, watching football and seeing football clubs sponsored by gambling sites can make people end up gambling. Another thing is that kids are watching it. We are in the times that children's are exposed to gambling ads and there is nothing that can be done about it because it is also about business. People should just not try to get addicted, gambling is not what is bad, it is addiction that is bad.

Yes, when a person's mood swings with the outcome of their favourite team's games or when weekend are dictated by match schedules, it  can indicate a potential issue. While putting interest in liking sports or having season tickets is normal, it can become a problem for some gambles. If you or someone know is struggling with gambling.

Yes, what we watch has either a negative or positive influence on us and might change our perspective to take some decisions ordinary we won't have taken if we were not viewing it, so watching football can make one to gamble. I take a typical example of myself, I was never a gambler but since I started watching football and supporting Arsenal as my favorite team I have being gambling and sometimes the advertisement they do on TVs during halftime also has a way of luring people to gamble, there's no way you will see an advert of someone that has won millions of naira that you wouldn't want to try your luck and see if you will win.

Shirt sponsors is a way of advertising the betting company but it doesn't trigger gambling, what does is the display of massive wins on television. Gambling is a decision that can only be taken by an individual which means he can be watching football and decides not to gamble so it's a personal decision taken and not the influence of watching football mostimes.

From my perspective as a football fan, I can say that watching football live does not automatically make someone a gambler, but exposure to massive gambling advertising and sponsorship can significantly increase the risk and chances of someone starting to gamble. Logically, the sponsors emblazoned on club jerseys and the advertising hoardings that constantly appear in stadiums during matches make gambling seem like a normal and common part of football.
I have also seen some teenagers who have started placing bets, they told me that betting will make watching the game more exciting and profitable. I suspect their decision to bet on football matches is due to the gambling advertisements that are shown during the matches, these advertisements are often designed to arouse emotions and create the illusion that betting can create a different atmosphere when watching the match.
