There's usually an item you buy that makes you say to yourself, "Nigeria has changed." Funny enough, it is not a phone or the latest gadget people worry about; it is the things of necessity like tomatoes, pepper, garri, and so on.
My mum was telling me how she used to buy four rubbers of garri for just ₦1,200. Each sold for ₦300. I also witnessed how Egro jumped from ₦50 to about ₦600 today. But the one that shocked me the most was a crate of eggs.
Prices of eggs sourced from the internet are as follows:
2021: ₦1,500–₦2,200 per crate (NaijaSabi) 2022: ₦2,200–₦2,800 in many markets (The Guardian Nigeria) 2024: Around ₦6,000 per crate in many locations (BusinessDay) 2026: Roughly ₦6,500–₦8,500 depending on where you buy (NaijaSabi)
Inflation hits hard when you start buying things yourself. You begin to wonder how prices have increased so dramatically. Sometimes, the price stays almost the same, but the quantity drops drastically.
My brother gave an example using Bullet, the alcoholic drink. He said it doesn't "shark" like before. 😂 I also saw the price of Milo on the internet and was wowed. No be Milo be this, I said to myself.
I was telling some kids that there was a time I paid ₦30 for transport to school, and they were like, "You're lying." 😂 Nigeria sha really don fall.
People don't even spend like before because of how dramatically the naira has lost value, reducing the purchasing power of Nigerians. Everything keeps increasing in the market, but salaries remain the same.
What was the first item that made you realize Nigeria had changed?
Do you still buy it today, or have you reduced or stopped buying it?
If you could show someone Nigeria's inflation using just one everyday item, what would it be?

It is only the children that was born in the year 2015 that don't know about the increment of everything you have outlined because they were born during the time the inflation has already taken place and couldn't spot the difference. During my time as at 2008 I was paying 30 naira as transportation to school and it was Miles away from where I stay and today you will literally pay one thousand naira to that same place we paid 30naira to, and this occurs from the high increase in fuel because that's what regulate the prices of goods and services in the country and once it goes up the prices of things gets hike by marketers too. The naira we have has lost its value due to the inflation in the markets so if one don't limit the things you buy while going to the market you might end up not having any other money left yet buy small quantity of things you want. I have stopped buying things I do buy due to high cost, now imagine cement that we do buy for as low as 700naira is now sold for #15,000 , the country is not getting any better due to bad leadership and corruption.

Since the existence of Nigeria i have never experienced an administration as corrupt as the one we are in now, an administration that is only interested in what they stand to gain and not why they where elected into power. The first thing that happened to me under this current administration was when i went to buy fuel and noticed the price of fuel have been tripped, them i noticed i am in a wrong nation. Apart from this fuel increase, I can say everything has drastically changed and even gone beyond control except we have change in government.

Nigeria has automatically change, I went to the market to buy fish of (500) but to my greatest surprise I could not see it, because it is no longer in existence, I remembered back then if you go to the market you will see a good fish of 150/200 and then fish of 500 will be very big that you can even use to cook a family pot of soup, but now you can not even see a good fish of 2k even if you do, you will need to beg for it. Another thing that is shocking is pure water, the water we were buying for ₦10/₦20 is now ₦50 per sachet, this is just water that in our environment that we don't find, is now becoming expensive. So now what this means is that ₦10/₦20 has no value any more in Nigeria. Also back than any family who has ₦500 can eat a good meal, but now is another different story. A lot has really changed in Nigeria.

In Nigeria now the cost of living is killing the living and most times we are our own problem because the cost production of sachet water is not that expensive that the producers has also increase the price from 20 naira to fifty naira per one, this is something they produce from their backyards, so we Nigeria make it difficult for ourselves at times. You can no longer see fish of five hundred naira, even the pepper we buy for 200 naira is sold for 500 hundred naira now, things are becoming too difficult for the common Man and the government that was supposed to regulate the prices of goods are only busy about conducting election. I was very surprised yesterday when I went to purchase bathroom slippers and I was told it's one thousand naira, something I usually buy for two hundred and fifty naira, it has now skyrocketed to one thousand naira. Some business owners don't accept ten naira anymore if you come to purchase something with it and there's nothing in the market that is sold for ten naira either that's to tell you how valueless it has become, so many times has changed that we can't literally mention all. God will help us.

Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over the rising cost of living, and the increase in fuel prices has affected almost every aspect of daily life. However, whether these problems are caused solely by the current administration is something people will continue to debate. What most citizens want, regardless of political affiliation, is a government that prioritizes their welfare, tackles corruption, and implements policies that genuinely improve living standards. The increased in cost of living is caused by the administration in power and can never be doubted, Although that of other nations maybe because of restructuring or quest for a god economy but that of Nigeria is completely because of corrupt administration. Previous administration before the past and this present one in power, the cost of living was a bit managed and coordinated such that the cost of commodities was moderate but this present administration have destroyed the effort of all because of selfishness and greedy thinking. It is never a questionable situation because its obvious that what we are going through in Nigeria now is because of the wickedness of this current administration.

Eversince Muhammadu Buhari won Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015 Nigeria presidential election, things have been changing, and Nigeria was much better than the way it was now. But to answer your question, the first thing I purchased that made me believe that Nigeria has changed was when I bought the size of ice fish I used to buy for 500 Naira in Buhari regime for 3,500 Naira in Tinubu regime.

That saying that says what goes up must come down, is not applicable to nigerian economy. Almost everything in the market that has incresed in price has never gone back to its normal price, even though recharge card price is still the same price, but the call and data duration doesn't last again. The day i know that nigeria has changed was the moment they started selling sachet water #50 for one sachet .

Nigerians used to have strong purchasing power, it was even stronger when it came to good. Food used to be cheap and affordable to the commonest of men. Transportation wasn't a challenge, people moved further while paying less and this made cost of items quite cheap. Since this administration came in life has been made difficult. Naira has been devalued thereby reducing the purchasing power of the people, in other words they promote poverty. Whatever you go to buy nowadays will make you scream and wonder why so much change.
