This topic has been pandering in my head for some time now and why I brought it up here though I don't know if such topic is already existing, in our society today most people believes that the younger ones should greet the older ones first while some believes the older ones is meant to greet first, I have received greetings from an older person first and I have also greeted an older person first but on a general point of view I think anyone can greet first without the feeling of entitlement that the other person is meant to greet first irrespective of class and age. What's your take on this? Let's talk about it.
My people use to say an adage that, greetings is the first sign to know a well trained and responsible people, and you have to greet those that are elderly, and also when you see a gathering of people and you are the only one you have the responsibility to greet first, my mum also thought me to greet any time I come into a room regardless if is my house or not as long as I am the one coming from the outside, greeting s very important in almost all society an culture.

There is no big deal about who greet first, on a norms anyone who first sees the other should just greet regardless of the age difference, greeting is just a sign of respect, and everyone deserves respect, elderly one respect the younger ones while the younger ones respect the older ones. It is just vise vesa, but some people take this greeting of a thing so personal that if you walk pass them without greeting them first, you are in trouble. And they don't care if you even noticed them or not. In a situation where people take it personal and it's not your fault, you just have to let go and move on without undermining how the next person feel or not because such people always look for fault.

Op in thr northern part of Nigeria my country, everyone greeted first, the elder greets without waiting for the younger ones to greet its a cultural stuff. While in the southern part of Nigeria, the younger ones grew the elders first its a sign of respect to greet the elders first and its disrespectful for elders to greet younger ones first. In western World greetings doesn't have any value, you greeted who you want to greet. And no one will feel disrespected, greetings is a choice.

Respect should go both ways a simple greetings shouldn't become a measure of anyone character, especially when they may not have even noticed one. Greeting is basic courtesy not a competition ove who should speak first . Sometimes individuals read too much into situations that aren't personal. Mutual respect matters more than who says good afternoon first assuming bad intentions over a missed greeting often creates unnecessary pressure.

Maybe i am too autistic, but i don't get why anyone should greet anyone in the first place. I don't see it a sign of respect, but just another unwritten rule like small talk. Class or age don't matter, because i greet only if i want to and i don't expect random people greeting me either, no matter if i know them or not. People who i know, know that i enjoy their company because we talk and hug a lot. I see good bye more relevant "greeting", because it gives clear signal that we are separating for now. Different societies with different rules and cultures, in the western countries I think nobody gives a fuck about your age and could greet you at their own will, over there people don't expect greetings or feel entitled to greetings from younger citizens, you don't go greeting any stranger cause they're older, to cut long story short, it's a thing of choice. In African culture it's like a taboo to not greet the elderly, some elderly see it like a sign of disrespect to walk past them without greetings some culture even demand that the younger ones prostrate to greet the elderly ones. So as earlier said, "different society, with different culture and rules'.

They said that respect is a reciprocal give those that deserve it, so when it come to the matter of greetings younger ones have to give their elders respect they should be the one to greeting their elders when ever they see someone that is age of them, there’s some tradition that they take the respect very strong younger ones cannot pass their elders without greeting them and anyone who those that most face the consequences. Some people take the greeting as a compliment, but to be honest speaking a person will not just go and meet someone in house or office without greeting, even though is elderly person that go meet the younger ones he most say hi to him that’s how both will respect each other.

I think there is no age limit for greeting. Even if you are older, you can greet someone younger, which will increase the respect of that younger person for you. Others will be able to understand how great a person you are through your actions. When you meet that younger person in the future, they will probably greet you before you. This is because if you need to teach someone respect, do it yourself and entice others to do the same. Some people do not greet younger people out of shyness, but if you are older in age and greet them yourself more than once, you will see that they will respect you and you will set a unique example in society.

I dislike the moment when everyone is taking it upon himself he right that he should be first greeted before they could respond to any pleasantries, sometimes you don't have to take pride into a normal way of living, because this is why some are taking it too personal upon themselves to do things so outrageous without considering themselves being in the same position, expect people to give you what you cannot also give to others, respect should be reciprocal.

And just surprised at this topic. Which culture or tradition that actually demands that the younger one should greet the elderly first? I do not think that any special thing should be attached to greeting. I believe that whosoever sees the other first, should be the one that will greet first. But in all honesty, the younger should always strive to be the one that will see the elder first. In the African culture and tradition, greetings is so important to us and it isn't something we should deliberate on who goes first and who goes later. It ignites spontaneously where there is no quarrel and misunderstanding .

I feel anyone can greet first, which shows level of respect and humility. But it will actually be more respectful if the younger person greets his elder first, that shows some high level of respect to the elder person, courtesy and good manners. Greetings shouldn’t be placed based on age or class, because it creates good relationships among people, it should just be a normality of everyday life, irrespective of age and class.

I see greeting as one of the ways to start a conversation. Some persons see it as disrespect when u dont greet them, especially some old ones. Then for example, assuming been an older person you have a younger person as your boss. Then if greeting first was to be by age, then you expect you boss being the younger to greet you? Though he might decide to greet you, but that is to tell you that greeting is not by age.

Greetings should be about mutual respect and not tied down to who to greet first. Definitely if both parties respect themselves they'll utter greetings without the having to worry about who did first. Now on the discourse on who should be the first? its only ethical for the younger ones to extends greetings but it is not a law written in stones and very few people recognise that.

There is no specific rule in greeting, but it is polite for younger to greet their elders first. Greetings generally convey a person's attitude and respect for others, thereby increasing the sincerity of one towards the other. Even if someone is older, greeting others first can also be considered a positive aspect. However, in most places, younger people are generally taught to greet first, considering the issue of respect for elders. This should not create any competition within any society or class. Anyone can greet anyone first according to their wishes.

I understand your point. In some areas where greeting is regarded as a form of respect, that means when someone refuses to throw a salutation, especially a junior to a senior, the junior is tagged disrespectful and lacks home training, meanwhile I see greeting as something that should just be done without too much attention drawn to it. When a person greets, especially a junior to a senior, it's not always because that person is respectful but cause they see it as a duty at that point. Someone can greet you but could still mess up where you are.

You know our society today an elderly one is supposed to greet the younger ones first before the younger one can reciprocate though it depends on the individual difference who see each other first should greet , yes if I'm the person so in a situation where the younger one see first he will great the elderly one is the elderly one see first he will also greet according to the custom of the community so it's not what we should be debating and making much noise is just an understanding.
