I think you've already read my opinion.
If I were given an ASIC like this, I'd use it until it breaks, but I'm not willing to pay $250-$300 for 5 terahash.
An extra 60 kilowatts of electricity is $3 a month or $36 a year for me, I wouldn't even notice those expenses.
Your power is cheap 5 centsyou are not a person that needs to buy it.
But my home power is 21 cents in the winter and 28 cents in the summer.
Let’s say 25 cents all year round.
I can run a modded t21 with 1 board at 50th 10x the hash power.
Cost me about 200+150+150=500 to build and it will burn
950 watts or 30.4x24x.95=693.12 700 kwatts
700x.25=175 usd a month or 175x12=2,100 a year for power
Plus 500 to build all told my modded t21 will cost about 2600 for year 1
Chance of a block 1 in maybe 150 years
Or buy the bco4
250 to buy and power is 60x12x.25=180 dollars a year.
So run the 50th modded t21 for 1st year and spend 2600
Or run the bc04 for 1st year and spend 430
Better yet run the bco4 for 10 years and spend 250+1800 = 2,050
So if you have 25 cent power and want a hobby that cost 200 a year for ten years time the bc04 is a good fun hobby gear that may make money or likely lose money.
Still a 200 a year hobby for fun is cool enough for many.
If my electricity cost 25 cents, I would look for other ways to have fun.
You're assuming 10 years of mining, but don't factor in difficulty increases. Perhaps 5 terahashes will be as useless in five years as old 0.25 terahash solo devices are today.
For me, a hobby is associated with, for example, modifying old ASICs, and not with buying ready-to-use devices out of t.
Yeah hobby in the USA has tax implications according to profit made.
If you do something that makes a loss 4 out of 5 years it is a hobby not a business.
If you do something that makes a profit 2 out of 5 years it is a business not a hobby.
These small units will likely not make a profit. Thus I call it a hobby.
My 9 S21xps and 1 L9 miners getting hosted make a profit thus a business.
Spare money for fun is common in the USA.
So buying a miner like this bc04 and consistently losing 50 cents a day on power but having a shot at every single block is something people will do.
It is the idea and concept of " bang I hit a motherfucking block" against all odds is what makes these cool.
Here is another way of looking at it.
I LOVE TO COOK. I am good at cooking. I can cook a steak with onions and mushroom sauce with a hint of tomato sauce that is out freaking standing. ALL high quality ingredients. Dinner for 2 made by me would cost 65 dollars. Including a homemade cheesecake for dessert.
Or I can go to a good steakhouse and pay 175. SO I choose to cook at home and save 110 bucks each time I make this for my wife and I.
So I do it 10 times a year saving 1100. I DO THE RESTAURANT 1 or 2 times.
There is enough money in my life to do that.
The restaurant feels good to do as I say my food is just as good but it is nice to have someone to do it for me.
Having the bc04 mining at
https://solo.mineshop.eu/miner/?wallet=bc1qqgtqn24rkwf47qs27frw2qsrh726hsvcf8l8zyIs fun. Will it hit a block? Who cares it is fun for me.
If you look at the mining at the solo pool I can tell you I am shutting down the large nodded t21 miner on Aug 1st. It is too costly.
I will run the
BC01
BC04
DC04
DC08
AND the new futurebit miner
All 5 miners total 350 watts and the t21 homemade miner burns 650 to 2000 watts as it is very flexible can do 33th to 130th
I can spend 350x24= 8.5 kwatts a day
Mostly to show how you can mine for hobby expect a loss but have fun.
