There are many investors who invest their hard-earned money, but they do not know how big a mistake they are making. That is why they try to hold it on a reliable exchange platform for a long time, because they do not know. He may feel comfortable with where he has kept his Bitcoin due to various reasons, but when he realizes it, it may be too late and for some it is still not a problem. If an investor chooses a centralized exchange platform to invest in Bitcoin for a long time, it is never supported. Just because something seems less troublesome, does not mean that it is safe. Of course, everyone should review it well and decide for themselves.
"Not your keys, not your coins" is mentioned countless times within this forum, but people still leave huge amounts of crypto on exchanges for years. There is real comfort factor, exchanges look and feel familiar, customer support is good, easy access. That is why they feel safer with them.
History is quite straight forward. Mt.Gox, Bitfinex 2016, QuadrigaCX, FTX — each major exchange on market that collapsed was long time holder who believed they were safe. FTX in particular really hurt as it seemed real, had celebrity backing, government discussions would be had, and it just dropped in blink of an eye, taking billions of dollars of customer funds with it.
“It may be too late when you realize” is most powerful line. There are no warnings for exchange failures. So you wake up one morning and withdrawals are stopped, then you are frozen, and ultimately you are a creditor in bankruptcy case waiting years to get back fraction of your money. Hardware wallet is minor bother. Once something has been lost on exchange, it is lost forever.

This is a really important reminder, and honestly, it hits close to home. It is so easy to fall into that trap of comfort because the big exchanges make everything look so familiar, almost like a regular bank. But like you said, when things go south, it happens in the blink of an eye, ttaking that extra step to set up a hardware wallet can feel intimidating at first, but that peace of mind is worth every bit of the effort.
Thanks for writing this out.

In my opinion, yes. Bitcoin is now too easily accessible to everyone because there are so many tutorials about it, and we can even access it simply by clicking an app, buying through an exchange and that's it. However, this convenience actually causes many people, especially beginners to overlook the most important security fundamentals such as holding their own private keys, backing up their seed phrases correctly, and avoiding storing large amounts of Bitcoin on exchanges.

So, this ease of use sometimes makes some people forget the most important thing about Bitcoin, security. This is very different from a decade ago when people had to go through a difficult process to learn Bitcoin because access to information was still difficult to obtain, so people were more cautious. In conclusion, Bitcoin ease of use is indeed an advancement, but it can also be considered a trap for those who don't truly learn properly especially regarding security. So it's not surprising that sometimes what you describe happens to some people the easier it is to learn Bitcoin the more they forget that it's not their Bitcoin that's being stolen but their access keys that are being left unprotected. So always hold it yourself because it's not your keys, not your coins.

I believe this is where a lot people overlook the difference between easy access and real ownership. It is so easy to purchase Bitcoins right now, but it's a different story if you want to take full responsibility of the coins.  In just a few minutes, a person can buy Bitcoin and  become a Bitcoin owner, but they don't know about wallets, backups, transaction fees or the importance of self custody.

Don't get me wrong, this ease to access Bitcoin is good for adoption but also can be a hindrance.  Many newbies think that having Bitcoin on an exchange, automatically means that they have control over it, but the truth about the matter is that they are still using or relying on a third party. So for me, the problem is no longer learning how to purchase bitcoin, it's learning how to own it the right way and safely.

I’ve come across people who own Bitcoin but don’t know the difference between keeping it on an exchange and holding their own keys. Some have never written down a seed phrase, and others have no idea why wallet backups are important until something goes wrong.
Such people usually only bother backing up their seedphrases after experiencing undesirable events (hacking or the bankruptcy of a centralized exchange), or after hearing about similar cases. So, I think you should educate them about the importance of self-custody, and keep important things private.

Sometimes, technology can make us careless and forget the important values we should be aware of. Therefore, don't become too complacent with technology; use it wisely, and in a balanced way.

It makes me wonder where the balance should be. If using Bitcoin becomes almost effortless, do people gradually stop learning the ideas that make it fundamentally different from the traditional financial system? Or is that simply  the natural path every successful technology follows as it matures?
Essentially, technology is designed to make things easier for humans, including cryptocurrency. In my opinion, the ease or convenience of using technology must be balanced with its security. In the case the OP is discussing, I believe we should prioritize the security of our personal wallets (including our seedphrases or private keys), and realize, that storing them independently (without a third party) is much safer. For me, that is a wise way to approach balancing.

Personally, I maintain self-custody for my crypto (including Bitcoin), and only use a centralized platform for exchanges (for example; to cash out into Indonesian Rupiah). Furthermore, I also separate my personal wallet for primary storage (for large amounts), and my personal wallet for daily use (with not so much value). I won't store that data online, or on frequently used devices, especially devices connected to the internet. So far, I have been safe using my method. Cmiiw.

Most of us advocate self custody of Bitcoin and that means owning an open source hardware
wallet and securely preserving the seed phrase for that wallet. Not everyone is willing to go to
those lengths in order to own Bitcoin.

In a world of "online" everything sich as cloud storage the majority of people are after and are
comfortable with trusting their data with a third party and Bitcoin ownership is no different to
them - just store it online

In terms of understanding how Bitcoin works, you can have the same understanding whether
you store the coins online or on a HW.

Yes, what you just said is true. I think it is more better to own Bitcoin, although it might not be easy doing so.

Coming in fresh, I actually didn't find it easy at all, so this question surprised me a little. I think it depends which part you mean, buying it through an app is easy, actually self-custodying it safely is still its own whole education.

When Bitcoin was still in its early days, most people who got involved had no choice but to learn how it worked. You couldn’t get very far without understanding things like private keys, addresses, confirmations, backups, and why self-custody mattered.
That’s no longer the case today.
Someone can buy Bitcoin on an exchange, leave it there for years, send and receive it through an app, and never really think about what’s happening behind the scenes. In many ways, that’s a good thing because better user experience is one of the reasons more people are comfortable trying Bitcoin in the first place.

At the same time, I sometimes wonder if convenience is creating a different problem.

I’ve come across people who own Bitcoin but don’t know the difference between keeping it on an exchange and holding their own keys. Some have never written down a seed phrase, and others have no idea why wallet backups are important until something goes wrong.

It makes me wonder where the balance should be. If using Bitcoin becomes almost effortless, do people gradually stop learning the ideas that make it fundamentally different from the traditional financial system? Or is that simply  the natural path every successful technology follows as it matures?
‎Has Bitcoin become so easy? No, Bitcoin has always been easy to use. Exposure is the difference now.

Back then, it was only a few that understood Bitcoin or even knew what Bitcoin was all about and those few were interested in getting more knowledge about it before investing their money in it, some did it with doubt, and some just invested in the form of gambling.
Today technology has made it easier for the world to know about Bitcoin and for Bitcoiners, whereby people can easily invest with little knowledge of Bitcoin and still make a substantial profit when they hold it. This set of individuals are those who aren't interested in the process, which is risk taking because some end up losing it because they have less knowledge of it.‎This hasn't taken away the fact of having knowledge of Bitcoin, it's just an individual decision to either know more before investing or to just invest and wait for the profits.

Yeah, the Bitcoiners' black pill is that mass adoption requires something to be idiot-proof. Therefore, since Bitcoin is technically far from idiot-proof and requires your attention to not be the equivalent of a 5-year old kid, then my only hope for global adoption is that a smart solution will be developed that will make the normies accept bitcoin without knowing it, just as in the stock market, pension funds move into bitcoin without the retirees know anything.
Interesting point. I absolutely agree that for bitcoin to achieve that true global adoption, the user experience have to be much more “idiot -proof”  As you’ve stated. And most people will actually not have to worry about the technicality like seed phrase, private key, UTXO, transaction fees and risk of self custody.

But this rises and important question for me which was how is it possible to develop a smart solution that will make the bitcoin much easier to use to the average person without compromising it core principles?

Bitcoin is fundamentally a decentralised system, that it security highly depends on mechanisms such as proof of work, cryptography verification and network consensus. If layers are built to make bitcoin feel simple to use as the traditional banking system how will they ensure  that this solution doesn’t introduce excessive centralisation?

I think the real challenge will be finding balance between simplicity and for the average user and sovereignty for those who want it. But of course mass adoption will come through bitcoin being integrated into financial systems so seamlessly that people actually use it without even realising it, but the big question is if it will that helps maintain decentralisation.

It makes me wonder where the balance should be. If using Bitcoin becomes almost effortless, do people gradually stop learning the ideas that make it fundamentally different from the traditional financial system? Or is that simply  the natural path every successful technology follows as it matures?

Well, I don't know why is that way, but people find it difficult to learn the fundamentals principles of any successful business although in the aspect of btc manys ways apps and channels has made it easier for people to just buy and sell without necessarily learning the after effects, so it has become a traditional. Nobody stops the ideas of the fundamentals, but people love to bye pass the system and awaits sharp earnings when you invest, we are profit oriented
Many people don’t like to start from the foundation. All they want is a fast result without understanding how it works. Bitcoin has become more easier because apps and exchanges has made buying and selling very simple. Just because it has become very easy doesn’t mean that people totally understand how it works. Many still need to learn about private keys, market volatility, scams, self custody or the value of bitcoin. Most people go into bitcoin because they heard that bitcoin price goes up and down and all they are after is to make quick profit.

It’s greed that push many people into bitcoin not knowledge. If someone doesn’t build a strong foundation, they may panic and sell when market is unstable, fall victim to scammers, or make worst mistake that proper education can avoid. To make profit isn’t bad, because everyone is investing to make gains. But if profit is the only thing in your mind, you may totally ignore the risk. The best thing is to learn the fundamentals, understand what you’re investing on, and invest with patience.

I agree with you to some extent, surely learning how to properly secure our bitcoin is more important than purchasing bitcoin because it makes no sense for a person to know how to purchase bitcoin but doesn't know how to properly secure them. Anyone who intend to hold thier bitcoin for Long term should look for a non custodial wallets to hold thier assets not in exchange, exchange is mainly for buying and selling it is not a place to store our assets. Newbies need to understand that exchange can easily be hacked, that is why it's not safe to hold our assets in an exchange wallet.

Well if you get to start investing in Bitcoin I don't think there's nothing much available for you to know about, especially with the fact that things has been made easier.
You know the reason why people will want to know more those days is because of their security, for security purposes, but now this problems has been fixed, it's my not only be about security but major of those problems has been made easier. So going for those knowledge is not really needed anymore because things has been made easier.

In Bitcoin investment, security is literally everything, because the safety of the asset is just as important as the asset itself. I totally agree with what you said about self custody, because it doesn’t matter how long an investor has been accumulating bitcoin, if they’re not in complete control of their assets, then it’s almost like they’re just stacking up coins for someone else because they could easily lose it at any point in time. Self custody should be prioritized by every investor at all time.

The problem is not that Bitcoin has become easier now. Rather, many people are neglecting their responsibilities in the name of this easier matter. It is not enough to just buy Bitcoin, but also to ensure its security. Anyone can start from an exchange if they want to. But it is wrong to keep it on the exchange for the long term and hide all the responsibilities. Because even if it is kept on the exchange, it is easy to use, but it does not have the private key. Then we actually have to rely on the integrity, security, and payment capabilities of an organization in addition to the Bitcoin network.

It IS creating a problem. Because of the added convenience, people will be missing out the true benefits of self-custody. The majority leaves their coins to a third party (usually an exchange), which takes the responsibility of protecting coins from harms way. But what if the company goes bankrupt? Or the government shuts it down? Or a hacker siphons users' funds? Then all of your hard-earned Bitcoin will be gone for good. That's why it's best to buy and hold Bitcoin on a wallet whose keys/seeds you control. Even if it has a slight learning curve.

Fortunately, wallet developers are making it much easier to manage non-custodial Bitcoin. It's all about improving the UI. A good UI, usually leads to a better UX (user experience). I'm hoping things more people move away from custodial wallets into non-custodial wallets. One can dream, right?

There is a concept of interface in programming. This means that people love an easy-to-use cover, and they don't care what's inside. Yes, bitcoin will be used by the masses without understanding in the future, but is that a bad thing? Not understanding many processes does not suspend their usefulness. All people can't be experts and want to understand technology just because they wanted to use it. I believe that an adopter who will be without deep understanding will be suitable for a start.

When it comes to Bitcoin things are always different. Different in the sense that you don't have to be an expert in Bitcoin before you can use it. Just as with the internet, almost everybody uses the internet but it not everybody that understand how it works.

When it comes to Bitcoin you have more responsibility, in Th was sense that you need to understand the basis, like seed phrase, self custody, avoiding of scams and lot more. Without you understanding this basics you can lose your money easily. So deep technical knowledge won't come first but the basics principles first, before then you consider holding Bitcoin

Using bitcoin was always easy but you just have to opt the good wallet and save the private key and recovery phrase along with you if you loose the key you can restore your wallet by recovery phrase. There is no difficulty in buying and selling of bitcoin you can buy or sell from top exchanges. It is simple and user friendly.

That's only true if you use a non-custodial wallet. But if you're buying and holding Bitcoin at a centralized exchange, you don't need to understand the concepts of seed phrases, self-custody, etc. The exchange handles everything for you. These days, it's easy to send/receive Bitcoin through a CEX. Some CEXs (like Coinbase) have an option of sending BTC to an email address. Even L2 networks like the Lightning Network have easy to remember "Lightning addresses". This convenience often comes with a tradeoff. And that is loss of decentralization and self-custody.

If you don't care about the risks, then keep using CEXs. For the paranoid, truly-decentralized and censorship-resistant solutions are the way to go. Just my two sats.

There is no problem in starting on the exchange, but everyone will have to go to self custody in a short time, it is not that easy. Because most new users lose their bitcoins by mistake without understanding the private key or seed phrase properly. So security is not limited to just withdrawing coins from the exchange, If someone rush without understanding, there is a possibility of avoiding the risks of the exchange and falling into other types of risks.

I get your point.. Self custody is more than just taking your coins off an exchange but you also need to know how to keep them safe and secured. But I don't think that means people should leave everything on an exchange for so long. I think, the best thing to do is to learn the basic process steps, try moving a small amount first, and get comfortable with the process. in that way, you're lowering the risks from both sides instead of rushing into either one.
