Because of my answer to one thread, I just remembered a friend of mine whose close friend was good at mathematics and analysis, and, between drinks, he asked how long he had been gambling and how much money he had spent.

Being good at mathematics and analysis, he created a chart to show how much he lost over the years and told him he could have bought a brand-new car with his losses, and asked him to stop gambling because if he didn't, he could buy a brand-new house if he continued gambling for the same number of years.

He felt embarrassed and despised; his solution? He unfriended him and just continued gambling.  Cheesy

They eventually got back to each other after a year; he can't ditch a friend who is good at native dishes, and of course, their friendship

That same person that lost enough to buy a car could have won enough to buy a large house, or a boat, or many other things. Gambling is a 2 way street, you could win or lose(most lose), but it's possible to win big.

I don't care if I lose 100k today because I could win 200k tomorrow. Just depends on how lucky I am and how degen I go as to what sort of session I might have. I think safe bettors don't have the type of swings that a degen has and the degen has the better chance at making a milllion. Safe betters might win a million over time, but it's over a long period of time vs short for a degen. Either way, no need to feel embarrassed.

Some people don't take advice well and end up getting offended...

As for what I lost—it wouldn't have been enough to buy a new car; maybe a bicycle. If you start doing that kind of math and have a clear idea of what you want for your future, you'll stop gambling—but hardly anyone actually runs the numbers.

That reminded me of a situation that had nothing to do with gambling but rather with spending that others deemed unnecessary. A friend of mine asked a woman out; she didn't drink or smoke, whereas he had those habits.

She asked how long he’d been smoking and how much a pack of cigarettes cost; she did the same regarding alcohol (beer). She crunched the numbers and said, "Look, the amount you've spent on this so far would be enough to buy a Honda Civic" (a car many people here consider excellent).
My friend looked her in the eye and asked, "You've never smoked, right?"
She replied, "No."
My friend asked, "And you've never drunk alcohol either?"
She said, "No."
Finally, my friend asked, "So, where is your Honda Civic?" Cheesy

From what I gather, the guy who gave the advice doesn't gamble. My question is: does the guy who's good at math and analysis actually own a brand-new car and a new house? Roll Eyes

My bad for not adding what eventually happened to their friendship; they made up after a year. He can't let go of a friend who always cooked him with native dishes and, of course, their friendship. Thanks for dropping this question, brother.

Two types of people who will made their losses but don't accept hear anything from someone about their failures and some whatever you told them they won't listen and won't even react . Maybe you're friends close one is a bit sensitive on these matter. No matter what you try you can't convince them. Since he could have afford to buy a car from his losing just imagine if he had won what could have he won. Since he is fine with that than your friend shouldn't have interfere. Unless it's leading him serious financial issue and mental problem.

No, I wouldnt feel embarrassed or despised, but I would feel pretty stupid if I needed a "mathematician" friend to tell me how much I have lost gambling so far.  I mean, its simple math after all.  All you have to do is keep a record of all your casino deposits and withdrawals.

I used to track it exactly like that back in the day,, but I eventually stopped doing it.  Nowadays, I just set strict limits for myself before I even start, and I actually stick to them no matter what.

Who doesn’t lose in gambling? Gambling losses are normal and should be the more common and expected outcome of gambling, but I’m surprised it’s now the opposite. People now move around with the mindset and mentality that they should be winning more than they should lose, and this is the only mindset that can actually make someone to feel despised or ashamed whenever they’re been showed their losses. But anyone who’s experienced and have the right mindset about gambling, they’d understand that there’s no shame in losing as far as it concerns gambling.

I does not sound so unrealistic to me, in my opinion. There are people out there on the streets who happen to have a very big ego and pride, so they do not tolerate to have their mistakes pointed out, specially in front of others.

There have been instances of guys trashing their friendships because of stupid things like that, which are directly connected to ego.

Ironically, people with a huge sense of pride tend to grow apart and put distance between the and others who actually care about them and their well-being. You have certainly stumbled upon stubborn people like that, we all have in our life.
People who seem not to want to be helped or be given advice.

Things like these happen between friends, especially those who are very close to each other but eventually the friendship will get fixed.

True that, but being too close sometimes each person feels that they are privileged and sometimes even the most nonsensical things makes them feel offended, although both don't hold it to heart, but the pride on them sometimes triggers and make the situation worse, not talking to each other, but actually not ignoring each other's situations and is always ready to help when things gets out of hand.

I know that losing in gambling is normal so it does not makes me feel embarassed when someone knows about my losses, since they can see that I am able to minimize the effect of those losses and avoided financial ruins.

What truth hurts. Gambling is never meant to be a negative aspect in our life, but if abuse is there, greed that motivates addiction is there, and gambler's emotions are no longer in control, hence its best to take a break or leave gambling for a while until he finds himself and his personal finances recover.

Telling a friend that your losses are no longer valid and reasonable, that your losses could build you more fortune instead, I don't see any misjudgment about it. One should not tolerate himself to lose a lot and lose more just because he finds gambling a better opportunity to be profitable. But what is truth actually hurts, that's why his quick reaction was that bad and unreasonable.

The same thing, the same story, with smokers: if they were to sit down and calculate how much money they spend on smoke every single year, if the money were put together, they could use it to acquire something tangible, but the reality is always the same.

Even if that money is not spent on gambling or any other thing that doesn't give back monetary value, the same money could have not been saved and put into that use, which is what the blame is about. If the guy is gambling responsibly, I don’t see anything wrong with that, and there is also a chance for him to win an amount which can’t be saved putting all his spending together in the next few years.

No I don’t feel sad or embarrassed about looking at a catalogue of my losses. I’ll be honest, my profit/loss is not pretty viewing % wise but I only ever bet with amounts that I can afford to lose which is what you should all be doing.

We can be disappointed losing bets but it should never cause you huge stress because that would suggest you are not practising responsible gambling which is crucial.

I think true friends should be able to discuss absolutely any topic with each other. And who, if not a friend, should point out something so obvious? Of course, someone might get offended, and that's understandable, but if that friend is honest with themselves and realizes they're losing far more than they're winning, they should take their friend's advice seriously and become more cautious with gambling. After all, if we're talking about buying a new car, that's tens of thousands of dollars.

Its important one observe self-awareness, that helps one to stay strict on their decision and also in maintaining responsible gambling, because without strict rules or limits, one can start going against the rules of the gambling and that makes one to start spending unnecessary. So, keeping everything under your control means there is no way you go beyond your limits and that's a very good mindset to keep on with, as the game remains for entertainment and not for other purposes.

If that really happens, then why do I need to be embarrassed. It's normal for a close friend to speak what is truth and speak frankly, so I have to accept that. But after that, I think it should be an eye opener for me that maybe I am already losing too much in gambling, and my finances instead of seeing it multiply, it may even turn zero-balance if I continue gambling blindly.

The key here, one should be open-minded from the criticisms of the persons close to you. They are not there to offend you, by saying that you're no longer productive and profitable in gambling.

To answer the thread title, probably no, but if someone told me how much I lost to gambling throughout the years, I'd probably think, "What I could have done with that money", but I wouldn't be embarrassed about the loss. I mean, I know what I am going into, and I know that losing is part of gambling and my losses will accumulate over time.

He felt embarrassed and despised; his solution? He unfriended him and just continued gambling.  Cheesy
Sounds like his ego got bruised with the reality and got pissed at the reality check he didn't ask for.

It's more like of an ager that caused the situation here but there is nothing to be embarassed about unless you are spending the money that should be used on your bills or something important.

Generally, I don't like to announce my win and losses to anyone because it is none of their business because whatever the consequences of my gambling then I am responsible for it. I wish people would realize these things about what not to do with their money then they can improve their financial status.

That is a classic denial phase right there. It reminds me of fans who stop watching sports news for a week when their team loses a major final, just to ignore reality. Your friend chose to "sub the analyst out" instead of fixing the tactics!Good thing they benched the drama after a year. True friendship always wins in extra time, especially when native food is waiting at the buffet!

Not a good way to end a friendship, but it's good that they've reconciled their differences- a true friendship that longs for each other will reunite.
There are gamblers who are full of pride, and they don't want to be reminded that they are losing a lot of money; this is one of those cases; this is proof that too much addiction will make you lose friends, money and everything you value.
In my experience, I almost lost one of my friends because of gambling; it's good that we have shared a lot of things that make my decision to choose him.
