He felt embarrassed and despised; his solution? He unfriended him and just continued gambling.  Cheesy

They eventually got back to each other after a year; he can't ditch a friend who is good at native dishes, and of course, their friendship
Thats a shame mate! That guy preserved his ego and pride chicken just because of gambling. There are really some sensitive people who thinks highly of themselves but when they got showboat by others they feel like embarrased or shame why their method doesnt work. I really think people should always not mind what others are doing either its good or bad.

OP: It's actually relative; seeing losses at a given moment is important. That's why the incomplete phrase "only bet what you can afford to lose" is a mistake if it's not understood correctly. If what he's lost is enough to buy a casr, but his income remains stable, then the car analogy is relative. This can be done with any cash flow or expense. If you add it all up over the long term, the net result might seem exorbitant, but it still aligns with the goal. It's just a striking comparison.

I spend over $1,500 a year on gas. With that, I could do many things, so you see the point.

We all feel more or less the same way when someone throws such question in our face. Personally I would not like to think about it as if I truly think about it these last 10 years where I heavily gambled with cryptocurrencies maybe I would have not bought a complete house yet I know for sure I would have 50% of the money of doing so and I would just need a loan from the bank to own this new house. I assume most gamblers are in a situation more or less similar to me so I think we all should feel ashamed for not owning a house right now  Grin.

Being good at mathematics and analysis, he created a chart to show how much he lost over the years and told him he could have bought a brand-new car with his losses, and asked him to stop gambling because if he didn't, he could buy a brand-new house if he continued gambling for the same number of years.

He felt embarrassed and despised; his solution? He unfriended him and just continued gambling.  Cheesy

They eventually got back to each other after a year; he can't ditch a friend who is good at native dishes, and of course, their friendship

This might sound funny but your friend is very right, however I think the money lost shouldn't be the problem rather how much you have make. There are people that has loss huge amount of money in gambling but the money they have made from gambling is unimaginable, they wager high and makes good return from their money, that's how they survived in all of their things but unfortunately many people result are different with loss.

There are gamblers don't know how to gamble yet they risk so much that if they have invested that money, they would have become a better version of their self. I think gambling is not for everybody and the high time we realize this, the better for us. You can't be losing money that can get you a car or something bigger and not get reward from gambling, that's too much to be doing, sometimes it's better to quit gambling than over try it with hope of winning.

Because of my answer to one thread, I just remembered a friend of mine whose close friend was good at mathematics and analysis, and, between drinks, he asked how long he had been gambling and how much money he had spent.

Being good at mathematics and analysis, he created a chart to show how much he lost over the years and told him he could have bought a brand-new car with his losses, and asked him to stop gambling because if he didn't, he could buy a brand-new house if he continued gambling for the same number of years.

It's actually funny when I hear people make such statements regarding someone's finances and how he or she spends his/her money. Because if I may asked, does that his friend who is not into gambling now owns a brand new car? Because it's obvious that he is not a gambler and yet couldn't also save good sum of money to buy a car too. Because one thing most people fail to understand is that when it comes to money, if you don't use it to solve your immediate needs at the moment, it will still be used for another thing else. As money never last forever, unless you are disciplined enough to save it for a particular purpose.

I don't think it was his friend who was showing him the numbers  I think it was that he's having trouble believing the truth. The realization of years of gambling losses turning into a tangible prize such as a car or a house can be an uncomfortable feeling. Particularly when you are aware that your gambling problem is out of hand. I also agree that if someone does not play, that doesn't mean that he or she will not become rich, as money can be used in numerous ways. Finances are all that's really important. Even if you don't gamble, if you're always gambling without a strategy you will never achieve any long-term goals. frank, honest friends who are pointing this out can be valuable.

Well everyone has that kind of mindset, as a gambler there could be regrets along time ago, or just recent. That's why for me I don't like to record my losses as it could trigger some mental stress. Nevertheless, as a gambler, we already know that consequences of what we are doing.

So I don't feel ashamed and maybe if given the chance most of us will continue to gamble too. But for those who might regret and wanted to change then good. But at least we have done what we think that time is the right way so I guess everyone is very different.

I think anyone that is recording his losses in gambling is taking gambling as something related to his financial life. If I collect $100 this week and I only use $2 to gamble, I can not thinking of recording my losses because the money I am using for it is very small and not all the time that I will be gambling because there are some weeks that I do not gamble because of work.

Without even counting, a gambler can actually imagine the amount they've spent on gambling. Just a rough estimate might already make them realize it's a pretty big sum. It's just that most gamblers won't consider doing that. No matter how many losses they take, the gambling will go on.

I feel uncomfortable showing my gambling losses or wins to others as people in my environment will not easily accept the reality if someone playing gambling so that makes me to hide my gambling activity to them. Maybe I can show my gambling activity to some closest friends who really knows me and will not judge anything except just reminds me to be careful in gambling, they know me better and will take care of me. They don't unfriend me just because they know I gamble because they believes me that I will not excessively playing gambling.

I've never felt this way, I am too stingy when it comes to gambling to the extent that I use money under a dollar or a bit over a dollar mostly to gamble, there is no way revealing my losses can have negative impact on me.

I have dreams and hopes but none is on gambling, I know what gambling can do to someone's life and I am here trying to make myself proud and have better future, I don't expect such result to come from gambling.

I would rather hope that I solved a bitcoin block one day than having hope on making life changing money from gambling some day.

 Grin great solution!
And actually, yes, it's a completely logical decision - why do you need friends who question your choices? Not in the sense that they discuss it with you in terms of whether it is right or wrong or whether it is effective, but in the sense that it is generally not worth doing something (or vice versa). I think even the most stupid person understands that gambling isn't free, and if he spends money on it, he doesn't need stupid advice like "if you don't buy coffee, you'll have a car in 10 years."

A common example that I use is that if you spend 1$ on buying a lottery ticket, at the end of the year, you have lost 365$ which could have been saved otherwise and in some countries this number is not a small one.

Because the cumulative losses will always be present and you can never really break even from gambling you have to be careful when you continue to bet like this. Not being able to accept the reality that gambling losses are going to accumulate and one cannot really move away from them, one should not sacrifice friends.

It is childish to do so and I hope that person understands their folly soon.

There's no need looking at those little amount of money that you are using to gamble which means nothing to you. It's gone, it's gone why start calculating. The moment, I bet, I count the money as loss and forget about it to enable me enjoy the fun and gamble again tomorrow. There are a lot of unnecessary things we buy and end up not using them.

I think it's human nature to like to cover up their own mistakes and weaknesses, and in that case, when faced with losses through gambling, it's also natural that they will try to hide it when they show it to people, or they will be unprepared when they show it to someone.
In my personal case, I don't like to show anyone my winnings or losses, even though I always play responsible gambling all the time, it is not because I do the irresponsible like the person did in the op.
I would also suggest not telling anyone about such financial matters because there have been many incidents where people who won large amounts of money through gambling became victims of violence and lost not only their money but also the lives of many people.

I agree with you. Because no one wants to reveal their weaknesses. That is why people share their winning stories with others but do not want to tell their losing stories anywhere. And if someone becomes addicted to gambling or if someone is enjoying it, they cannot easily quit gambling. They cannot decide to quit gambling until they suffer a big loss. Even if someone advises them to quit gambling at this time, they cannot take it well. They think that what they are doing is right and by gambling they will become very rich one day. But when their idea is proven wrong, they try to correct themselves.

This is in fact the best approach to matters like this. The reason why many people still feels connected to their losses is simply because they mostly gamble with money they are not ready to let go easily, especially money that’s meant for something else, and when they lose this kind of money, it becomes difficult to forget about it, which is why the need to revisit it will always be there. Gambling isn’t a business that you’ll need to constantly need to check your PnL every now and then, and it’s better not to treat it that way.

He felt embarrassed and despised; his solution? He unfriended him and just continued gambling.  Cheesy

They eventually got back to each other after a year; he can't ditch a friend who is good at native dishes, and of course, their friendship

I’ll answer without mentioning gambling at all Smiley
The problem with MOST people is that they flat-out refuse to keep track of their income and expenses. They come up with all sorts of excuses, and then... they complain that "I don’t have enough money to get by", "I can’t figure out where my money is going", "My neighbor must be stealing, because he’s replaced two cars in five years-where does he get the money!?"... But the problem is that people spend money without realizing how much or on what.
I figured this out a long time ago, and even the first half-year yielded very tangible results! Just try writing down your income and expenses and grouping your expenses by "cost categories". And when you see the "balance" of your income and expenses, you’ll find plenty of ways to improve your financial situation or your life.

P.S. That’s exactly why I have a strictly limited budget for gambling, and I will not exceed it under any circumstances.

I hate this gimmick. Lol.
So, he that doesn't gamble, how many cars and houses has he bought over the years?
Btw, do you need to be a good mathematician to know your net profit or loss?

Anyway, I don't feel embarrassed if someone shows me my losses because I don't gamble stupidly. Even though I am in a net loss right now in my gambling, it would not be a very big loss, but I strongly believe I am in a net profit because the last time I looked at it, I was in profit.
I am not going to stop gambling anytime soon, but I will always try to gamble responsibly.

Without even counting, a gambler can actually imagine the amount they've spent on gambling. Just a rough estimate might already make them realize it's a pretty big sum. It's just that most gamblers won't consider doing that. No matter how many losses they take, the gambling will go on.
Yeah, it’s just like you don’t bother considering or looking back to count how much you’ve spent on groceries or how much you’ve spent on movie tickets, you know those money is completely gone and looking back on such money wouldn’t do you any good, especially when you are someone who only considers gambling as a recreational activity and nothing more than that. But for people who are aiming for profit in gambling, doing so might actually help them to see if truly they’re making profits or if they’re simply just wasting their time and money on something that’s not even giving them any/enough profits, and perhaps, that’s could make them have a rethink.

That's right, everyone has different kinds of lifestyle and this applies in their sense of reasoning, there are some that don't care if they lose more or not, as they won't be ashamed of anything while some will feel bad and embarrassed and will like to quit gambling,as its not a bad idea but its true, we all know that gambling can never guaranteed wealth or money for us, yet choose to bear the risks. So, feeling ashamed won't solve any problem rather to blame oneself or feel embarrassed about it, its best to play the game as it ought to be, as one needs to gamble within their budget and set limits to how they gamble, that makes them to have a healthy gambling lifestyle to enjoy.
