This is the height of ignorance and stupidity I've seen in a long time, and I can't help but imagine his face and what he must be feeling like when he broke this machine and found no bitcoins inside, I can imagine him saying "whoa whoa, where did all the coins go?"

Ignorant is a curse that is in form of a spirit telling people that have been inflicted by it never to use their brain again.
The word ATM may be the reason that made them to hijack it thinking it must be money.
If they are wise after finding out that there was not money inside, they should have asked questions around the would Bitcoin.

At least asking about the meaning of Bitcoin and why there was no money in the ATM must have given them a new knowledge about how they can send and receive money using Bitcoin. Those that are not ready to ask questions and seek an answer to questions that are bothering them must be doing themselves harm that can make them foolish and irrational.

Besides the fact that the culprit acted on ignorance, this also shows that many people are aware about the existence of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency but do not care to know or understand how to use it to their advantage as per investment or for transactional purposes.
There's still a lot to be done as concerns real case adoption of Bitcoin and not just to know about it only.

Am glad though it wasn't a sort of wrench attack on individuals thought to own Bitcoin, because such ignorance of the perpetrator would have been deadly for the victim if they can't explain why they don't have Bitcoin in surplus quantities or if they don't know their seed phrases.

People are still stupid and unable to change themselves. The person who did this thought there was fiat currency which is why he did this stupid thing but he doesn't know there is no fiat currency here he only has Bitcoin which can only be felt and tasted.

However, in my opinion, whoever did this should be identified and brought to justice because it is a huge crime. He may have stolen many more fiat currencies from ATMs in this way and he has previous experience.

Haha this is exactly what happens when someone with zero understanding of how BTC actually works. I wonder what the reaction of that thief would be when he finds out that the ATM does not have the kind of cash he wanted. I mean, it does have some cash depending on which kind of transactions were being made, like for buying BTC, people deposit cash and get BTC in return.

Anyway, this is really hilarious though. I think it will be the first BTC ATM heist we have ever seen, so mark it as a historic moment.

Just doing a little research on the image, I found that it's a BATMTwo machine, which allows converting cash to cryptocurrency. So it's possible that what he was looking for wasn't the "Bitcoin" you're referring to, but rather the cash stored inside the machine. The thief might not have gotten the "Bitcoin" he was hoping for, but at least he could have gotten some cash if someone had recently used the machine to convert their cash to cryptocurrency.

Being ignorant enough to steal a crypto ATM machine is a stupid and harmful act. The robber needs to be brought to justice to pay up the damages their caused. It is correct to report the authorities so as to ensure the safety of the immediate community. The proper punishment will act as a deterrent, future infractions by the perpetrator will be excluded.

Who wouldn't laugh at this news, when there are still people nowadays who remain ignorant that bitcoin is a virtual currency, not physical fiat that comes with ATM machines loaded with fiat. I just can't imagine the face of the person after finding out that the box is empty, and there's no shadows of valuable money inside.

This is a realization that even thieves should also do their research before stealing so that they won't end up with zero gains after their operation. And to make it clear that bitcoin ATM machines are never the same with fiat ATM machines.

And at least in here they had surprisingly lot of cash in them. As it used to be a way to buy bitcoin anonymously and withdraw cash by selling bitcoin. They were constantly refilled as withdrawing money anonymously was quite popular. In fact it was so popular that lot of time they were empty, and you could see from their web page how much you were able to withdraw money from each machine, so that people could prevent going to empty machines.

These days, everything has changed and KYC came along, so those machines are just disappearing now.

Maybe lack of the idea that Bitcoin is not some physical coin made him do it; he could probably be targeting the cash, which some could have used to make a Bitcoin purchase since some of the machines allow cash deposits, or the thief could also be thinking the keys can be found inside the machine. There might be a lot in his head before making that move of stealing that machine, not just getting the Bitcoin alone, but his disappointment will be on another level.

Or maybe he just don't have idea what bitcoin is, and just think that since this is an ATM machine, most likely funds are inside. But the exciting part is seeing his face totally surprised, where's the money?lol

I just come to realized that there are still people who want to take advantage, yet they aren't sure of their future actions. They may hear bitcoin most often that it comes with a great value, yet the value is not seen physically but virtually.

Obviously, no one will be looking for what they don't understand. Bitcoin is intangible and everyone that uses it know about its intangibility, so there's no way they will be looking for bitcoin there.

If they don't know about bitcoin, they wouldn't go to steal it still. So, what people are saying above was probably what happened. They were looking for cash and not BTC.

Still a credit to BTC. It cannot be stolen by breaking automated machines.

Some people are ignorant thinking Bitcoin is a physical coin like one cent coin just because it has word coin on its name the same way old politicians are thinking of Bitcoin as some magical tool that can launder money.

The world really need to know more about Bitcoin it seems and there are not enough people who understand Bitcoin besides it just being considered as another currency.

The machine can hold a certain amount of cash. Thieves aren't stupid; if the machine is empty, it's just bad luck. The funny thing is, why use such a small machine for a cash deposit machine? From the photo, it's clear that the metal layer is thin, making it easier to lift and bend.

On the one hand, Satoshi offered high-level security, while on the other, Bitcoin ATM architects used a thin metal layer. A contrasting combination.

Since Bitcoin is perceived as cash, the person who took it thought he could get money from it.
This is a pretty silly thing to do. I can guess that this kind of behavior stems from a lack of understanding about Bitcoin, leading them to believe that Bitcoin is physical cash.
If they ran away after doing this, I’m sure they’d be left puzzled, realizing that there was absolutely no money—as they’d expected—and wondering, “Why isn’t there any money? It’s an ATM, after all.” It’s really funny.

Saw something like this before, some guys broke in to a shop, put chains around the ATM and dragged it with their car out of the shop. They stole the ATM, thinking they could extract physical Bitcoin from the machine or something. It was like 10 years ago though, the story I saw.

But bitcoin ATMs can take cash from people which they use to buy bitcoin on the bitcoin ATM, there is a place inside the ATM that the cash can be found. But the cash on the ATM would have all been taken when the ATM is not in use like over the night but I am not sure, unlike fiat ATM that can always be funded. There were people that were serial ATM stealer, stole the remaining cash in a bitcoin ATMs. After stealing up to 3, they were caught. I saw related news about it.

For someone who is illiterate, hearing the word "Bitcoin" for the first time, what do you expect? And Bitcoin ATM exist? 😲 The first thing that will come to their mind is the coin 🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙 inside the ATM machine.

I gotta get is out somehow, I wouldn't expect less from such people, this can also happen in my country, there are people who have asked me where the Bitcoin is, like they are asking for a coin to see how it looked like, and the moment I said it's digital they said naaah.

Why not show them the Bitcoin logo?  At least, they'll get to know how the symbol looks like. To make it fair for them, print out the logo on paper and distribute it to them. Case closed 

I won't blame them if they are aged already but if they are still in their youthful ages, it is unfortunate they don't want to learn and embrace the growing technology. If they believe the figure in their bank account is valuable without seeing it, they obviously have no reason to doubt bitcoin.

As for the guy that stole the empty machine, maybe he should do some research on what's he's intending to steal next time.
