I haven’t made this exact mistake, but I can easily see how it happens. Our brains are surprisingly good at skipping repeated words when reading. I now number every word from 1 to 12 and check the list twice before storing it. Glad you were able to recover access and spot the missing word in time.

If its first setting up and first time writing on paper, what first to mind is checking if the address generated are the same by importing it on another device with the same wallet. That's how i check if the seed i write are correct.

As for your mistake, it can be resolved by double and triple checking the provided seed and what you have written, i'll always do that. And so far, i've never got a problem related to backing up mnemonic seed.

Are you guys not double-checking it? Or even try to re restore it; let's say the wallet is already set up. Before funding it, try to remove that wallet first and restore using the words you just wrote.
Last time I set up my wallet, I did and so far so good.
This is for sure commno problem, there are some Bitcoin wallets after backing it up, they will ask you again to enter so they are sure what you wrote are all correct.
Until I encountered a mistake that led to me almost losing access to my bitcoin wallet, I didn't usually do that. The luck I had was the first phone I used to create that wallet was dumped at home and not wiped yet. While in a different town from where I am based, I tried to access the wallet from where the phrase was written down. I noticed it was a totally different wallet. After struggling a few times and almost giving up, I was struck with the idea that I might have misplaced a word or two, which I later confirmed after I went back to grab the phone, which I used the backup option to correct.

It could have been worse.

Have you made a mistake such as this?
Good thing that's where it got to. I mean much worse mistake if you couldn't find the seed you have written down and your PC went bad as well.

Our seed phrase or keys are the most important things when it comes to crypto. If you don't take good care of them, that is where your number one problem will start from. At least a good number of us understands how important they are and choose self custody.

It's good to double check and take precautions when handling your seedphrase. Don't do anything in such aspect under in a rush.

Backing up your seed phrase may just be a normal routine, but a slight oversight could be costly, very costly. I once wrote down my seed phrases and put the paper safely away. Months later, my laptop had an issue and I tried using the seedphrase to recover my wallet but couldn't. All efforts to import the old wallet didn't work, so I decided to take a closer look at the seed phrases I wrote down. I was struck with horror when I counted them and they were eleven words instead of twelve.

I wondered how I missed a word, a seed.

Days later after fixing my laptop, I accessed the wallet and quickly checked up the seed phrase. The issue was that I misses a word that was consecutively repeated. It was like:

milk honey truffles anger woman kings seed seed bananas oranges action event

It completely eluded me that a seed was repeated.

It could have been worse.

Have you made a mistake such as this?
Personally i haven’t made such mistake but i know its possible to make such mistake, the seed phrase has numerous words that are obviously very difficult to cram, the only way of saving it is by writing it down properly and also backing it up, what i did was to write them down and archive within my core valuables, i also had duplicate copies that are well safeguarded because any mistake that results in you losing your seed phrase just know that you can’t access your crypto wallet again.

For many, the seed phrase may seem simple, but it is not at all a simple matter, rather it is the most important thing. There are many people who carefully save their seed phrases and try to keep them in a safe place, while there are many who avoid them and face danger at some point. The mistake you made was definitely a big mistake. If your laptop had completely crashed due to a mechanical fault, your money would have been lost. So, this happening to you is definitely a warning sign. We should always pay attention to such things and save them well. While saving the seed phrases, the words should be carefully compared several times so that there is no mistake, so we should pay maximum attention to these things and protect our wallets. If you use these times carefully for just a short period of time, there will be no fear of money in the future and your money will be safe.

It's not hard to write the wallet seed phrase down accurately, and it's a requested step by Bitcoin wallet softwares too, so people actually do their wallet backups. It's only they will whether keep that wallet backup safely, make some copies, or just have only one wallet backup to use in the future. Some people throw their wallet backup arbitrarily then later they lose it, or they do not mind to store it.

It's not recommended wallet backups but people can learn about that, and they are all able to do that rightly.

Have you made a mistake such as this?

You created the wallet without verifying the seed phrases before funding the wallet.
Some idiots said that it's not necessary but how did this happened then?

Here is a relative topic I made about this mistake
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5586434.msg66862699#msg66862699

You will be shocked with what some people said in that thread.
Normally a crypto wallet will ask you to reinsert the words one by one before allowing you to complete the setup.

But it's not enough, before funding that wallet, after writing down seed phrases, uninstall the app and reinstall again then insert the seed phrases just to confirm again.

I also do the same thing as you because I assess my own memory which nowadays sometimes forgets things more often so I will save them in a notepad to have something to remember in case I forget the key. By doing this I think this is something we need to do because it's not just an activity we do especially when we have responsibilities to our wives and children of course our minds will forget more easily. So I think if there are important things for us personally it's better to write them down and make a strong note of our key that will be useful for our future like the key phrase. I think it's better to keep it in a place that's easy to access when we need it. We want to enter it again of course the key is still strong in our notes and does not make things difficult for us personally by forgetting the key.

I think there are many instances, but in general, we know it's important and requires caution when storing or copying. Even if you write it by hand as a backup, in a safe place, it's best to read it through.

Errors will certainly occur due to habit, and we assume it's normal because we've done it so often. However, careful cross-checking is also essential. If the balance is small, it's okay; if it's large, you might have to look for one more word to complete it.

It's not hard but who knows if OP is shortsighted, you never can tell and maybe himself, he doesn't know that he is shortsighted. So, it may contributed to why such happened. Mistakes are something that can happen to anyone but when abnormal happen to people, you can't say they are dumb, it may be due to other underlying issues or it might be that he was not paying proper attention to what he was trying to make as back up, so many possibilities if you ask me.

Errors and mistake can occur but I don't think seed phrase back up are that complicated thing to make as error. Most wallets doesn't let you proceed with wallet if you don't back up your seed phrase and if you do, there will be this {!} caution sign on your wallet as indication of reminder that you are yet to back up your wallet. If you used a good wallet, you should get this all the time and it's normal.

Mistakes, errors can be made because we all can make these things but if people actually do a step of using backup to recover a wallet before starting to fund that wallet, they will be well. Because with this step, they will be able to detect any mistakes, errors they made, so that with a dummy (empty) wallet, there is no loss. They can simply abandon that wallet, create a new one, backup, test backup and if things are all accurately (no mistake, no error), they can use that wallet safely.

Fund loss only happens if people don't back up wallet, or don't backup wallet accurately and don't careful test it.

As a rule, after creating a new wallet, it's recommended to write down your seed phrase and the first address for receiving Bitcoin.🙋

Then you need to completely delete the Bitcoin wallet from your device (using the app and deleting all app data in the settings).

After that, you need to restore the wallet on your device using the seed phrase you wrote down, log in to the wallet, and check if it contains the receiving address you wrote down. Only then can you start receiving Bitcoin to this wallet. Before that, no!

Yes, it's incredibly tedious, but here, as in aviation, the rules are written in blood... It's better to spend a little time, but at least be sure you're protected from any surprises. And yes, sometimes the seed phrase contains the same words. Sometimes they even appear in a row. But such a combination is extremely rare.🧏
