Depending on the aspect you’re viewing it from. There are people who through gambling have made it in life. Some through the profit they made in gambling. Have invested in other businesses, most have gambling plans on what to do with the profit. They don’t place a bet above their earnings. Through which the money they’ve invested have earn them more money.

While on the contrary, you can necessarily see it as a sure way of investing your money, because there’s no guarantee of getting back the money you’ll lose, unless luck is by your side…

However for me personally bitcoin is more sure way to invest. Even when the market isn’t favorable, with patience you will surely get your investment back with lots of profit. So are other legit ways to invest money rather than in gambling.

Gambling is not supposed to be seen as investment because the result is not predictable and the house always have more advantage than the players. When you stake money, you may eventually lose everything immediately and there’s no assurance that you’re going to recover everything you have lose. Bitcoin is different from other legitimate investments because you are investing in an asset that you will appreciate at the end. Yes it’s true that bitcoin price can fall overtime, but it’s a quality investment and if you have patience history has shows that longterm investors can recover from market ups and downs.

But that doesn’t mean that it can guarantee profit, but your success doesn’t depend on luck only. If someone wants to gamble, let them see it as an entertainment and only use money that they can afford to lose but if the goal is to build wealth in the future, I will advise the person to focus on investing in so solid assets like bitcoin or any other legitimate investments while gambling can be mainly for fun not a place to make money.

Have a colleague at work place who keeps saying that gambling is also investment that in gambling whatever amount you use to gamble can actually yield back the results, he emphasize on that if you are gambling you should do the best to use a better amount to place your bet so that if you win then you gonna have good pay out.

I will not be surprised by what your colleague said because I know there are some people who argue blindly without any evidence, just because that is how they believe. So,I may say your colleague is the kind of person who may have already made up their mind that gambling can someone rich. If not, they couldn't have come up with the argument that gambling is also an investment. How will gambling be an investment when the chances of winning are fully based on luck, with no assurance of success. The worst part is even it saying  using large amounts of money to bet is the way out, that can easily destroy a person because there is no guarantee that someone will win even once. It is very possible for someone to gamble 100 times and not be lucky enough to win a single time.Just imagine someone using $100 to bet 100 times and not winning even once.so let imagine someone to have 100 time without lucky to win.gaming can't never been seeing as investment, and anyone else seeing it in that way is just deceiving itself and it will surely regret it later.

It is true that trading depend on skill and strategy. But I don't think having the right knowledge alone is enough to generate consistent profit. If knowledge alone were enough, then there wouldn't be so many people losing money in the market.

Trading and gambling are two different activities, but they have one thing in common, both are based on probability.

However, I think we are drifting away from the main topic. OP is talking about investing, not trading. Trading is a financial market activity, but it is different from investing.
I don't think so that we are drifting away from the main topic because if we talking about the investment it is also a trading we know that there is various categories of trading like the short-term trading, mid term trading and as well the long term trading. And in this case, we basically call long-term trading investment in simple terms.

And whatever the subject, even if we are not talking about cryptocurrency investment but about any external investment, it cannot be compatible with gambling. And in this case, since investment does not fall under the category of investment, gambling should never be used as an investment.

Investment has to have a thesis. If there's a strong thesis, it doesn't matter what the asset is.

Purchasing something like Pokemon Cards or DOGE back in the day would absolutely be called gambling yet people buying them had a thesis (of course not all of them) and it played out well.
That's perfect example, you're right about thesis or research and TCGs are now very on the trend but I'm scared of the hype that it's doing right now, one piece, NBA, etc. Whilst for the doge, it's unfortunate that I didn't took the gamble which was on my head way back then. So for the love of passion who did it in the past just took the gamble out of their pockets and it's now worth it.

investing in memecoins to me is also a form of gambling because gambling is typically when you invest or better said stake your money in an uncertain situation where your profit is higher based on luck. Investment is when you put your money in a position where it grows, being it slowly it fast but the potential of you winning is higher than losing and that’s why it is called investing whereas in gambling the potential of you winning and losing are the same and your chances of losing seems to be even more than your chances of you winning in a perpetual manner. Memecoins most of the times are not like that, when you invest in memecoins you are never guaranteed
IIRC, there was this meme craze on 2021 and investors rushed into it. To be specific, it was in the solana network where too many memecoins came out and with the community response to it was there's a bunch of them that profited with it. Well, that's truly a gamble, it's profitable for them and considered as an investment until it's not.

Gambling is not in any form an investment because if you gamble you stand the chance of having nothing to fall back at, you make use of your already end money to gamble and when it comes to trading and investment, you are expected to perform a specific task that could draw more income towards your portfolio based on this strategy you use to trade over your investment, many are just trading without knowing that they are taking the risk to gamble it when they are not making positive outcome from it.
The difference is slight, as gambling doesn't require any strategy and relies entirely on luck. Trading, on the other hand, can use strategy, although it's still influenced by a certain degree of luck. However, when a job involves a specific strategy, the results aren't entirely due to luck. Investing is also different from gambling and trading because investors typically only invest in assets that are well-known and in high demand worldwide, so they don't invest their money carelessly. This means that investing is a career chosen based on one's own research, not on the advice of others or any external influence.

Is he right from what you think?

Comparing gambling with long term investment is like comparing apple with oranges, they both are not interlinked. Gambling is something that is entirely based on your luck and chances of winning in gambling is less as compared to losing your money because the whole gambling industry is designed that way. While long term investment is less risky and you can easily get good profit if you have the patience to hold you investment for long term like if you can buy and hodl your Bitcoins for 5 years or more then you are deemed to get good profit.

your friend is definitely wrong because gambling and investment are not the same thing. Infact there are so many differences between gambling and investment. In gambling the outcome or winning is based on luck or chances but in investment is not so. There is no way he can be able to manage risk in gambling but risk can be managed or reduce in investment through diversification.
From what you said OP ,  I think is either your colleague is definitely confused or he is an addicted gambler. Because it is only someone that is addicted to gambling ,that will view gambling and investment as being the same thing and to even think of using big amount of money to gamble with instead of an amount they can afford to lose.
