Porto 2 - 1 Aston Villa
Sporting 2 - 0 Monaco
Notice that these were games against strong opponents who are in the first division of their leagues. While Benfica lost against a team from a lower league. I know that Benfica later beat Belenenses 5-1 in a friendly match, but that was a home game. They perform better at home, but Belenenses is a weak team
I wouldn't pay much attention to results of friendly games, especially if it were played with not main squad. Also, Benfica started their season earlier than others with UEFA qualifier, while others still can prepare. BTW, this weekend we have season opener - Super Cup between Porto and Torrense I think differently; friendly matches are good for testing strategies and improving team cohesion. The more friendly matches, or training games, the better for validating substitutions, formations, etc. This is better than testing with the championship already underway. I think it's a very valid strategy, and in my opinion, there should be more games with this purpose.

Trying to score two goals against a team that only managed to score will be complicated. But I still believe they can draw, or perhaps both teams to score would be a good bet here!

I see... I'm experiencing the same problem on CazéTV. Benfica won the game 5-0. They advance to the third qualifying round of the Europa League. However, this weekend marks the official start of the season in Portugal, with the Super Cup match: Porto vs TorreenseWill Porto have an easy victory, or will Torreense surprise them like they did against Sporting?

I confess I'm very surprised by the result of this game.
Benfica 5 - 0 St Gallen
I watched this game. In the first half, there was only one goal, scored by Vangelis Pavlidis in the 11th minute. Interestingly, in the first half, Benfica had 74% possession compared to St. Gallen's 26%, and they had two clear chances compared to St. Gallen's zero. In the second half, Benfica, with the red card a St. Gallen player received, took full advantage of it, scoring four goals.
But I kept wondering how on earth those St. Gallen players managed to score two goals in the first half. They make so many mistakes. In the 83rd minute, a player was close to the Benfica goalkeeper but shot wide. He couldn't even shoot properly. In the 88th minute, it was even more ridiculous; the player couldn't do something simple and score. I don't know what happened to the St. Gallen attackers.

A really solid start by Marco Silva! I got a little worried about Benfica though when they lost the 1st leg. Yesterday they made up for that undoubtedly. He has newly arrived in the end. He will do some experiment until finding the best strategies. But he is no stranger to the Liga Portugal. How about playing for the Europa League title also in his first year? However, this weekend marks the official start of the season in Portugal, with the Super Cup match: Porto vs Torreense
Will Porto have an easy victory, or will Torreense surprise them like they did against Sporting?
Winning Taça de Portugal must be feeling like a dream for a 2nd league team. But honestly I don't expect Torreense to repeat it in Super Cup too. I say Farioli will start the season strongly by winning this one.

For me, it was a real surprise. For a team that struggled to score one goal, scoring five is apparently a huge achievement. I don't know how they did it, but it shows, at the very least, a lot of resilience from this team. It will be interesting to see if this happens in championships that actually count!

Before we know it the first round of the Portuguese League will kick off next week. I see that the Portuguese League as similar to the Spanish league, where three teams seem to consistently dominate the standings in most of every season. Last season FC Porto won the title. And in the two seasons prior Sporting CP won the title twice in a row. But in the 2022–2023 season Benfica dominated the Portuguese League by winning the title. I hope this upcoming season will feature more challenging competition to make it even more exciting to follow. And perhaps the two teams that have just been promoted to the top tier of the Portuguese League will also provide plenty of surprises as they compete. I personally hope the team that Cristiano Ronaldo once played for will continue to compete fiercely against the other teams so they can win the league title again. What are your thoughts on which team will dominate next season?

I didn't said something different that friendly games isn't important for preparation. What was my ppoint that there is no need to pay much attention to result of friendly games because result isn't most important thing there. For me, it was a real surprise. Difficult to comment without watching the game, but yeah, didn't expected that 2nd leg will be complete opposite. Especially when you remember last season's Benfica under Mourinho when they struggled to score a lot even against bottom table teams.

Benfica has done well when playing at home, even when they're not at their best. Even so, in home games they always manage to at least play well and get a draw or a win. But in this game, I believe these were the negative points for St. Gallen: 1 - Serious defensive errors committed by the St. Gallen players ( the foul that led to the red card was unnecessary; the St. Gallen player, Jozo Stanic, didn't need to commit the foul. Then the penalty committed by Leon Frokaj was unnecessary and note that this guy came on in the 57th minute when his teammate was sent off) 2 - The red card that the St. Gallen player received in the 57th minute 3 - The lack of skill of the St. Gallen attackers (I don't even know how these guys managed to score 2 goals in the first leg) Today's important game: FC Porto - TorreenseI placed a parlay bet on Porto to win with odds of @1.19. This parlay bet includes Porto (in today's game), Porto (in the league game), Benfica, and Sporting to win in league games. The total odds aren't very decent, coming out to around @1.89, and I'll be watching Porto's game today. For those who don't remember Torreense, they're the ones who beat Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final. Those guys ruined my parlay bet in that game. I hope Porto doesn't disappoint me today. It would be very humiliating if they also lost to Torreense.

I'm pretty sure that the reason why Benfica struggled in the first leg was lacking in fitness. They played only 2 friendlies before that game as you might have seen. I don't find it good enough to be fully ready for official games. And of course they had a new manager who was Marco Silva... Combining these 2 things, things didn't end up well for them. However I'm really impressed with their recovery in the second leg. The Benfica we know might be back maybe? Or I'm just hasty for now.

I'm also routing for Benfica this season, they have a very promising team this season. If you watched how they played St. Gallen, you will attest to the fact that they are fully back tk their form. Although FC Porto is also going to be a huge problem for them. FC Port showed a wonderful performance in their friendlies, defeating Aston Villa in one of those matches which shows their level of preparedness for the new season. It is going to be a a competitive season as they kick off next week.

But going into the league we should not put too much hopes on Benfica because this is a team that is still under progress as they are building a new Benfica setup. Am not saying that they are not going to do well in this current season, but we should know that in terms of management Mourinho just left the team and another manager has taken over. This means that a new idea and new was of doing things, the players has to adapt to the new manager so that they can play to his style of football. It will take time before thees player at Benfica can blend together well and play as a unit. Even though Benfica is set to do well this season compared to their last season performance we should not expect that they will win the Portuguese league come this season.

Porto won the Portuguese Super Cup and lifted the trophy. They were already the favorites going into the match, and there were no surprises. Although Porto won thanks to a goal by Victor MOW Froholdt in the first half, it must be said that they didn’t play particularly well against their opponent. The match was evenly matched; Torreense was a team with the potential to pull off an upset, and if they had scored, they might have forced extra time. For Porto, this was an opportunity to cap off the season with an extra trophy, and they made the most of it.

That's why these friendlies are important; now both teams have something to improve before the points start rolling in. Anyway, I still think it was more St. Gallen's fault than Benfica's merit. They scored two goals in the last game, but this time they weren't able to impose themselves as much.

FC Porto 1-0 Torreense Porto won by just one goal. But many expected more goals, but they weren't able to score. Actually, Torreense did a good job and forced Porto to defend a lot.
Another interesting point is that with this victory and the conquest of this Cup, Porto became the Portuguese club with the most titles/cups in Portugal. It ended up with 88 official titles, compared to Benfica's 87.
With three more national competitions underway this season, will Benfica manage to overtake Porto again, or will Porto gain the upper hand? We'll see at the end of the season.
