Porto won by just one goal. But many expected more goals, but they weren't able to score. Actually, Torreense did a good job and forced Porto to defend a lot.

Another interesting point is that with this victory and the conquest of this Cup, Porto became the Portuguese club with the most titles/cups in Portugal. It ended up with 88 official titles, compared to Benfica's 87.

With three more national competitions underway this season, will Benfica manage to overtake Porto again, or will Porto gain the upper hand? We'll see at the end of the season.

And I don't see 1-0 win very negatively. Big team often want to secure the result with minimum effort in preseason or at the beginning of season. Because their intent is only trophy, they don't bother much about scoreline.

Torreense had the same statistics as Porto. It's not that Porto was bad, it's that Torreense was the same as Porto. Porto had 53% possession, Torreense had 47%, both teams had 4 shots on goal. Porto was more efficient, but if there had been more time, Torreense probably would have tied the game.

Anyone familiar with the Portuguese league and the rivalry between these two clubs understands that this is a much-debated issue.

In practice, it doesn't really mean anything, but it greatly influences public opinion and that old idea that "my club is better than yours".

So, in the end, it's just an argument to fuel the debate between supporters and rival commentators.

They started the season playing on equal terms with Porto, and if it weren't for their efficiency, they would certainly have started by winning against a great team. It's something to observe, regardless of the level of the league. They are a good team that can improve and compete head-to-head!

Anything but a convincing win for Benfica would be a surprise. If they qualify eventually, which I strongly assume, they would be one of the top contenders  in that competition.

I don't know about Braga. They are the favorites, but had a mediocre season in 25/26 and Dinamo Minsk is already in full swing. It should still not be a problem, but wouldn't go for a very high handicap. Bookmakers say it couldn't be any more one sided than this.  Odds for Dinamo Minsk to win are almost 30, but as I said, this could suggest that Braga sends them home 4:0, but I don't think it will be that high.

I’m convinced there won’t be too many problems for the Portuguese teams; they are both well equipped to beat Hearts and Dinamo Minsk.
Dinamo Minsk have an all Belarusian squad apart from two African players; I wouldd say Braga are in a much better position and could win even with their second string side.
Hearts of Midlothian are certainly stronger than Minsk, but Benfica are also clearly superior to Braga, so I would say the teams are evenly matched in these fixtures, with the edge going to the Portuguese sides.

Benfica will win this one easily, almost certainly by more than 1.5 goals. So it's not really worth betting on them, unless it's as a multiple bet. The same goes for Braga. A Benfica and Braga winning with over 2.5 goals in the Benfica game would be interesting.

The Benfica match just kicked off a few minutes ago, and Rafa Silva found the back of the net after 3 minutes. While Braga is leading by a goal to nil at halftime. Their opponents are not formidable. So I expect both teams to win their matches and also get good results in the second leg to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

Apparently, the three big teams have everything they need to win. Will there be any surprises?

Braga don't look ready yet for this season. At least their Europa League performance is telling me that. They should have got a much easier win against a way smaller team like Dinamo Minsk at home.

Benfica are doing just fine... Marco Silva collected really good results in his first matches already. I think we will see it continuing in the Liga Portugal as of this weekend.

I don't expect a surprise from Sporting or Porto either.

Here are my bets for the games in this first round:

Estrela Amadora - Sporting

Last season wasn't good for Sporting, who finished in second place. They lost the cup in the final against a second division opponent, I'm talking about the loss in the game against Torreense, and finished the season without any titles. This new season they seem determined to change things. In 4 friendly games, they had 4 consecutive wins. Although they were friendlies, their opponents weren't very weak. My prediction: Sporting wins with odds of @1.19

Porto - Alverca

The current champion, also the Super Cup champion, they will come to this game with the sole mission of winning, mainly because they will be playing at home. But I'm not very convinced by Porto's attack, to be honest I'm putting them on my parlay because they're playing at home and have had a good defense. My prediction: Porto wins with odds of @1.19

Benfica - Academico de Viseu FC

Benfica plays at home against an opponent that isn't very strong and to my surprise Benfica has been doing very well in attack in recent games and since they're playing at home, I expect them to win. My prediction: Benfica wins with odds of @1.11

In the league opener, we watched the match between Estoril and Famalicao. Neither team looked particularly prepared when I watched the highlights. Famalicao must be happy to have come away with a point from this away game. Although they went into halftime with the lead, Estoril managed to score the equalizer in the second half. I can safely say that Estoril created twice as many scoring chances as Famalicao.
Sporting Lisbon’s match will kick off in half an hour. I think Sporting will secure three points without any slip-ups in their first game.

I'm watching the game right now as I write this post. The first half is ending, and honestly, Sporting's performance in this first half is disappointing. They can't finish properly every time they get to the opposing goalkeeper. It looks like they're in a friendly match. Honestly, this is a terrible start to the season. If they want to fight for the title this season,

then they'll need to make changes to their squad. They did well in friendly matches against stronger opponents than today's, but probably because the opponents in the friendly didn't field all their best players, today they are weak against an opponent that isn't fighting for the title.

Sporting = 10 shots, 4 shots on target, 66% possession, 0 goals

Estrela Amadora = 2 shots, 0 shots on target, 34% possession, 0 goals

If things continue like this, I wouldn't be surprised if Sporting loses or draws. Even the bookmakers are increasing the odds for Sporting; it's currently at @1.40 and could go up. This is a bad sign, meaning bettors aren't very confident in Sporting's victory anymore.

I don't know if you call it a surprise, but Vitoria Guimaraes were the favorite and lost at home. Vitoria Guimaraes were dominating the game but they conceded a goal after losing possession while on the attack and were unable to equalize.
Last season Vitoria Guimaraes also failed to beat Arouca in both matches. I couldn't understand why bookmakers had them as the favorites. I think betting on these mid-table teams is risky, at least early in the season. We should stick with the familiar trio. Look, Sporting is in the lead. The odds are low but at least we know these teams better. BTW do you know why didn't Luis Suarez start in the game? I found Ioannidis choice interesting. (Haha, he scored right after I posted this )

For this first week of play, I'm banking heavily on FC Porto and Benfica to get the maximum points. A straight win is the most likely option because both teams are in super form and are the two major team in the league so the struggle for the title will start from their first matches. Sporting Lisbon may not be a big threat this season as they have sold their coach as well as some key players that made them strong.

But Farioli is such an amazing manager that I find it hard for Benfica to stop them for now. Porto also missed being champions for the same amount of time and they quenched their thirst. Now I'm expecting a back-to-back from them.

Well, maybe it's not a good idea to bet in the first few weeks. Sporting just blew a 2-0 lead. I'm sure they never imagined they'd drop 2 points on the road against Estrela. Not a good look on the first week.

I won't be betting on Porto and Benfica matches this week either. I'll just be watching. The first few weeks are risky anyway.

Porto gave Farioli a chance and he gave them a championship in return. I remembered the season when Ajax lose out on the championship in the last 5-6 weeks. It was truly a traumatic experience but Farioli seems to have gotten over it. Young managers can make mistakes. Success follows when club presidents stand behind the manager, as we saw in the case of Porto's last season.
