Most of us buying Bitcoin, doing DCA, using a hardware wallet, or storing our seed phrase safely. But I wanted to ask you a question,

If something happens to me today, will my family be able to recover my Bitcoin?

If the answer is No, then your Bitcoin may be lost forever.

Almost all of us on the forum know it that Bitcoin gives us complete ownership of our money, but that also comes with responsibility. Unlike banks, there is no Forgot Password button or customer support that can recover your wallet if the private key or seed phrase is lost.

Why is a Bitcoin Inheritance Plan important?

Imagine you've been buying Bitcoin through DCA for the last 5 or 10 years. Your family doesn't know which wallet you use, where your seed phrase is stored, or how to recover it. And After your death, the Bitcoin will still exist on the blockchain, but no one will be able to access it. Actually, those coins become permanently lost.

What should a good Bitcoin Inheritance Plan include? I think this method will help you a little.

  • Teach at least one trusted family member the basics of Bitcoin, hardware wallets, and seed phrases.
  • Store your seed phrase securely in an offline location. Never save it online.
  • Do not keep your seed phrase and recovery instructions together. If someone finds both, your Bitcoin could be stolen.
  • Write a simple instruction letter explaining:
    • Which wallet you use
    • How to recover it
    • What information should never be shared with anyone
  • If you hold a significant amount of Bitcoin, consider learning about Multisignature wallets for additional security.

We often say:

Quote
Not your keys, not your coins.

But I believe another sentence is just as important:

Quote
If only you know your keys, your family may never inherit your coins.

So I would say that Bitcoin is not only an investment for ourselves but can also become a valuable asset for future generations. That's why creating a simple and secure inheritance plan is just as important as buying Bitcoin.

Now, If you suddenly became unavailable today, would anyone in your family be able to recover your Bitcoin safely? What else would you add to a Bitcoin inheritance plan?

Not disclosing is not only in bitcoin investment. Even with banks, there are people who have a good amount of money in their bank accounts with no next of kin or family member who has access to their bank accounts. It is not as if they don't understand inheritance or that anything could happen to them, but they choose not to disclose their details because it doesn't feel safe for them. This is just the same situation in bitcoin investment. For one who doesn't have a trusted person as a family member, if they haven't made any inheritance plan, it could be because they haven't found the right person yet for inheritance or the right time hasn't come yet. Not everyone is the same; some people need to make plans for inheritance for their investments. This is not instantaneous as an investment begins.

There are several things that are very important in inheritance planning -
  • Choosing an honest and responsible heir.
  • Providing basic training in Bitcoin.
  • Ensuring safe storage and confidentiality.
  • Giving your heirs a hint about the location so that they can retrieve it after your death.
  • Adopting a strategy so that no one can access the seed phrase and private key while you are alive.

Achieving wealth is a very difficult task, so we must also pay attention to ensuring that the wealth is not buried with us. It is not only wise to strengthen or complicate security, but you also need to know the process of recovering it and take appropriate measures so that the heirs can retrieve it.

It's the most right measure to take when you're already reaching a significant amount of bitcoin accumulation in your investment but then we also have to be careful to discern when should be the right time and the right person to allow privy to such sensitive information as our private keys.

Something else is that if everyone hurriedly share the information of their bitcoin wallet keys to family member we would be having a vast growing trend of lost bitcoins while we're alive compared to when we're dead without letting any family member know about our bitcoin. Trust is an important thing that shouldn't be delivered in a hurry when money is involved. Some people you tend to know their true character when given secret to valuable information to access huge funds.

Perhaps what should be done is what I can refer to as a test of character, before giving out  the information of the particular wallet keys that is loaded with huge funds, you should first test them with another different wallet that has little funds in it and see what they do with that information over the years while you're still alive before entrusting them with the bigger one.

This is something that needs to well planned, if not properly planned, you can be alive and your bitcoin will be gone even before you, so proper planning is impirtant.

Trust is something that is very hard to get, and to give someone access to your seed phrases, you need to trust them with everything that is why you need to have a trusted person to show your seed phrase.

If one have a child, you need to teach them so many things about crypto which includes basic knowledge, keys and address and how to send bitcoin so that when you leave and you have bitcoin, they can access it if you give them assess to your seed phrase.

Why not just handle things through a lawyer instead, let them handle it like your every other asset; that is, if it is a really significant amount of Bitcoin. Cause if you say you want to trust a family member with your keys, they probably might take from it even if it's a trusted family member.

Bitcoin inheritance get as e be because we don train our mind say we no suppose trust person when it comes to our bitcoin holdings. Personally, I believe say if you no fit trust your partner with your coins, why you go come trust lawyer? E dey safer to inform your beneficiaries say you won leave them some bitcoins. You no need to tell them the amount. Just use locktime method take send the coins to their wallet.

Everyone may have to pay for their ignorance by not knowing what to do and how to prepare themselves for what is expected to come over them with their bitcoin holdings. We are expected to leave our daily life as if there is no more tomorrow. This will give us the consciousness of what will be next after we are no more.

It is not possible for you not to have someone you can confide your trust with, except you are not trustworthy as well, planning for who should have access to your portfolio is very important and this is where tend to secure a storage means that could only give us access and any additional person we wanted like our spouse or children, anything we don't do now will later be done even by those we don't expect or rather be forfeited as the case may be if we don't plan today.

But the truth is that we just have to trust somebody somehow if we are to pass down the fruit of our hardwork to the next generation. Because the truth is that when it comes to life we don't know tomorrow and how things will turn out to be, hence the reason for these types of plans just call it a extra backup plans just for the sack of your family. Even if you don't trust your wife at least entrusting it to one of your children will be a good idea , to avoid your bitcoin that you have accumulated throughout your life for ever.

And what's the guarantee that the lawyer won't steal your coins. I am definitely not sharing my seed phrase with a lawyer, never! If i am to pick between storing my seed phrase with a lawyer or in a bank safe deposit box, i'd definitely go with the latter, not like i have any intention of using either option, but that of the lawyer is completely off the table.

That said, i do not have any inheritance plan set up right now, though i have an idea in my head of what the perfect one would be, but i have not just gotten myself to do it just yet.

Take your time study those that are close to you , your relatives and love ones . Make sure to take your time before choosing who you are going to trust with your recovery seed or your assets , cause if you will tell the wrong folks they may go against you . Doing so you are only endangering yourself that’s why you must take your time , maybe your wife or your siblings any one you know is trust worthy and tell them about your bitcoin investment because when you leave this world and there’s no one to access your BTC investment, is same thing as you losing it .

We worry too much about death and transferring our wealth to family and loved ones, but we don't even care about teaching these family members and loved ones about bitcoin and maybe investing for them so that they can own their own bitcoins and have custody of the seed phrases to wallets and as well also be investing themselves. What if you pass your seed phrases to your family and they plan your downfall or even make attempt to kill you because the world is becoming dangerous day by day. We have seen scenarios where family members gang up against their brother who is wealthy and kills him either spiritually or by poisoning. Anything concerning your wealth should be kept secret until you are sure of someone who you can entrust it to, or when you are approaching old age.

How many Bitcoin guy man have that you will think of hiring a lawyer? How sure are you that the lawyer is going to deliver if you die because Bitcoin is not like other asset under your name that lawyer can't claim. Bitcoin is different, the lawyer can spend the Bitcoin from behind you and your there will be no evidence provided that he moved Bitcoin from a wallet and if they see it, you can't prove that this Bitcoin belongs to you, will be too complicated.

It's better you find a person in your family that will do this for you, I don't think that a family will be that worst that to get a single peesn that will help you do this kind of job will be very hard, all your family members can't be that bad, there is a person that you can always rely on even at the verge of your death.

The dead doesn't have to worry about that, do they? Cheesy Roll Eyes

Yes, i get it that you should leave something for your family when you are gone, but i also believe it is better to die without an inheritance plan, than to be alive and someone you think you trust fucks you over and steals your coins. I'll let you choose which you think is better. And before you say you'd have to trust the person first, mind you that people change for so many reasons and that could also happen to your trusted folks.

Tl;dr, an inheritance plan is great, but don't lose your coins trying to set one up.

Well, I just heard him mentioned significant amount. However, I personally would prefer giving it to my family members if I don't have next of kins. of course it is better you leave your wealth for your family to enjoy than going with it, Because is of no use. and as such, you will be tag as wicked person.  And I'm even going to support them to call you a greedy person, i know the stress you went through while building those assets, it could be that non of your family members were able to give you a little support while you were struggling but if we are to look at this angles, trust me we can't help anyone that is why you should forget about those things.

I don't actually agree with this idea, and there is nothing that suggests that this is the objective correct choices. You are just making a judgement based on your personal beliefs. If I want my Bitcoin to die with me or if I simply choose that it happens this way, then this is my choice. I am exercising the free choice that Bitcoin provides me, and there is nothing wrong with that. You may not like the choice that I am making, but that does not mean that your choice is the correct one and that others should do how you want it to be done.

Teach at least one trusted family member the basics of Bitcoin, hardware wallets, and seed phrases
Unless you are talking about only the husband or wife and the children, this is a very bad idea. This is the kind of information disclosure that leads to people getting kidnapped and robbed. Do not do it, you are increasing your vulnerability by a lot for something that may never become an issue. From a security perspective, this is the wrong way to go about it. The person that is trusted today could become untrustworthy tomorrow for thousands of reasons, but you can't take back them knowing that you own Bitcoin.

because when you leave this world and there’s no one to access your BTC investment, is same thing as you losing it .
The dead doesn't have to worry about that, do they? Cheesy Roll Eyes
Actually if you look at the data, the more people inherit in value the worse people they become. There is this false belief that passing things onto your family members is always a good thing, but the reality shows that it acts like a handicap on their development in many cases.

I would guess that many people are more at risk of losing coins this way than their family members eventually not being able to access their coins in some ways. If people follow the correct backup strategies, they must have their seed phrases, wallets and passwords somewhere. Eventually with time they would be found, and even more in the case where let's say the spouse knew that the partner was invested in Bitcoin. In that case they would actively search until they find something.

Interestingly, not everyone comes to this reasoning.

But it's something we all have to put in mind. The fact that we are supposed to keep our Bitcoin Investment to ourself should not be a reason to lose your coins after you pass away. No one will live forever and it's is good to plan towards such time.

I have seen many proposals for the inheritance plan, but there's no single one that's better you just have to take the risk and let a trusted family member know about your bitcoin hodlings and how to use a wallet.

These knowledge would've helpful to them when time passes. There's a difference between hodl and hoard and we shouldn't mistake both for same thing. Hodl your bitcoin so you would earn enough profits from it, but don't hoard your bitcoin investments so it doesn't get lost. I mean, what's the point of your efforts if it all goes to waste?

Why is a Bitcoin Inheritance Plan important?

Imagine you've been buying Bitcoin through DCA for the last 5 or 10 years. Your family doesn't know which wallet you use, where your seed phrase is stored, or how to recover it. And After your death, the Bitcoin will still exist on the blockchain, but no one will be able to access it. Actually, those coins become permanently lost.

But at least letting one person that you trust have access to credible information about your investments and available balance in their bank accounts.

This is a big mistake and shouldn't be about trust but security of your money and where it ends if you are no longer accessible.

For those that are married, your spouse should have some details about your valuable assets and access to your bank account it helps in situations like this.

Why not just handle things through a lawyer instead, let them handle it like your every other asset; that is, if it is a really significant amount of Bitcoin. Cause if you say you want to trust a family member with your keys, they probably might take from it even if it's a trusted family member.

What is your ascertain that if you tell a lawyer about your seed phrase and in his custody he’ll keep it for you and give it to the rightful owner when you’re no more? Bitcoin I feel is not like fiat money, anyone who gets to hold the keys to the wallet to such fortune may want to temper with it. I still feel it will be better to give it to a family member of relative most trusted to keep the access with him until you’re no more before he will bring it out. It is better a family member eats up that fortune than a lawyer who you met to work for you only. There is no two ways about it, they’re all risks to be taken and I feel that as a person, you will know the best approach to use and the family member that’s worth more trustworthy to keep this safe and allow every eligible person benefit from it when you’re no more.

We worry too much about death and transferring our wealth to family and loved ones, but we don't even care about teaching these family members and loved ones about bitcoin and maybe investing for them so that they can own their own bitcoins and have custody of the seed phrases to wallets and as well also be investing themselves.
Your whey off course regarding the message of this topic.
One can own Bitcoin if he wants to, and it is a good thing to encourage individuals to be able to invest in Bitcoin, that's a case of its own. But relating it as a better option with what the op is talking about doesn't really make sense. These are completely 2 different things.
