I was thinking about gold miners. They’re basically just people mining gold, maybe it doesn’t make sense to compare the two. I’m just trying to understand. Bitcoin mining seems different. Running a mining operation requires at least some technical knowledge, right? Does that mean Bitcoin miners tend to understand Bitcoin much better than the average holder, or am I looking at it the wrong way?

People can not be the same, the way some miners will see bitcoin will be different from the way other miners will see it, but what that is important is that they are mining bitcoin for profit. You have seen Bitmine went into ethereum staking and also ethereum holding, while MARA went for AI data centre by reducing its bitcoin holding and probably its bitcoin business also. If bitcoin mining is not profitable for them, they will not mine bitcoin.

Bitcoin miners do not necessarily need to believe in holding Bitcoin, a lot of those operations are ran as businesses which will pay bills, salaries and others. These bills are paid from the Bitcoin the get from mining so there is no way they can hold a large chunk of their Bitcoin. They can hold fraction of the Bitcoin they mine but definitely not all of it since they are constantly selling some of their mined Bitcoin to settle other needs.

I would simply say Bitcoin miners are in it for the money or ROI and not necessarily because they believe in it. Surely they believe it is a profitable and scalable venture, but at the end of the day, bills has to be paid and maintenance needs to be carried out and if mining Bitcoin isn't profitable, they either close shop or relocate to a place where cost is cheaper to run their mining farms and make profit at the end of the day.

I think this will always boils down to the miners preference. A miner might run a mining farm yet know nothing about bitcoin’s monetary policy.
Likewise, someone who has never mined may have a deep understanding of economics, decentralization or Bitcoin’s history than the miner. Just being a miner won’t justify the fact that you have more knowledge about how bitcoin works.

You're right, one will struggle if they have no knowledge prior to bitcoin mining. It's either someone they've hired for to do the technicalities of it and do it for them and they simply pay it while having some instructions. But I think what you're thinking is about the deeper knowledge about it and just to balance it. There are technical people who are not miners and yet they have prior knowledge about mining and vice versa.

When an idea becomes an industry, the majority in it will always be businessmen.
Bitcoin mining became an industry years ago.
Hope that answered your question.

Bro, I think you already know the answer to these questions. Developers understand the protocol deeply, and miners understand the hardware, energy economics, and hash rate, which is a completely different skill set. With new ASIC machines, you don't need to learn much. You can start easily without even understanding what Bitcoin is. In short, bro, money can help you build an airplane, and if you don't even know how to fly it haha. But if you want to start mining on your own, you can still do it. And the gold comparison is a good example because a gold miner does not have to understand the monetary theory to mine gold, and a BTC miner does not have to understand BTC philosophy to point ASICs at a pool. But if they both know what they are doing, then the better.

It is difficult to answer your question accurately. But. If by 'most' you mean number of Miners and not the majority of the Hashrate, I really do believe most of them are Bitcoin believers. But then there are Mining Farms which are definitely and obviously a business and not a hobby any more. You can however start a Mining Farm with no knowledge too, although I would argue it would be stupid as it will be easy for you to get fooled. But there are people you can obviously pay to help out. I can not imagine the largest Mining Farms being handled by the owner only. They probably have people for maintenance, security et cetera hired to do the work.

Not all Bitcoin miners are businesspeople, some miners don't see Bitcoin purely as a business, many miners are driven by their beliefs in Bitcoin. But if we were to say the majority, they likely come here for the money. At the end of the day, mining can still generate profits for its miners, but they also need to spend money on hardware investments, electricity costs, etc., and it would be hypocritical not to expect financial returns.

When you say most then my answer will be yes, most bitcoin miners are just business people. But when we look at the early miners then I will say they were believers, it was mostly the enthusiasts of Bitcoin that believed in the vision Bitcoin presented that mine Bitcoin. Miners didn't do it then because they were looking for profit but they did it to belong to a community that has grown to what it is today. But the case now is different, the miners are business orientated, we have people now setting up Bitcoin mining farms and this farms only have one purpose in mind, they are doing this to make profit. People are investing so much into Bitcoin mining farms that I don't think it is only because they are believers that is why they are doing that. Bitcoin has outgrown just being a currency for enthusiasts instead it have become a business ground for capitalist and people interested in making money and that is why we are seeing a lot of centralization coming into the industry right now.

Depends what you mean by believers. They believe that it's profitable to mine it, otherwise they wouldn't mine it. And consistency is just practical as you can pretty much predict your revenue, so building your infra to mine strongest possible rather then chasing next profitable alt. And obviously they understand bitcoin more then the average holder, as average holder doesn't need to know pretty much anything about it. Anyway, i would say that people running full nodes are the true "believers", as that's not happening for profit.

These businessman believe that Bitcoin mining is profitable. Otherwise, they wouldn't have started in the first place. If their calculations were wrong, they would cease operations and cease to be believers because they no longer mine.
“Believers” may have extreme perceptions such as never cashing out their bitcoins, but that is highly unlikely.

Some bitcoin mining business have evolved into profit driven company and some of them have pivoted to AI although not completely, therefore I believe not all miners are bitcoin believers and just businesspeople. Maybe the best indicator to determine whether a bitcoin miner is also bitcoin believer is the length they hold their mined bitcoin until their sell off or they stated clearly that they believe in bitcoin. Other than that it's hard to determine.

From a technical point of view, I believe that this is exactly the case. Do most of them actually care about Bitcoin’s philosophy, or are they mostly just in it to make money?
Does one interfere with the other? Can always combine business with pleasure. Speaking of individual miners, I believe that most of them are currently BTC-enthusiasts, as there's an easier way to make money on bitcoin: "just buy and hold". Or maybe it's better to ask the miners themselves? There should be plenty of them among the users on this forum. What motivates you, miners? I was thinking about gold miners. They’re basically just people mining gold, maybe it doesn’t make sense to compare the two.
They just make money, but don't believe in the future, assuming that gold will make our future better. I’m just trying to understand. Bitcoin mining seems different. Running a mining operation requires at least some technical knowledge, right? Does that mean Bitcoin miners tend to understand Bitcoin much better than the average holder, or am I looking at it the wrong way?
I believe your reasoning is correct, as bitcoin is a technology, and those with technical expertise certainly understand it better than others. However, it's worth noting that bitcoin isn't just a technology, but also a financial instrument (asset). This is a completely different aspect, which perhaps only economists (professionals in this field) can better understand. But their expert forecasts are still trash.

most of the bitcoin miner is just business people or businessmen they do it because they want profit by securing the Bitcoin network. But not all the bitcoin miner is doing business sometimes people doing it just for fun or simply want secure the network itself. Solo miner is with small miner usually isnt really profitable they doing it because for fun and if they lucky they can found one single block and sell it.
and yes Mining bitcoin is different totally diferent with regular mining they need atleast basic computer knowledge to do that and specific hardware called ASIC. there are ton of public bitcoin mining and now they are moving to AI datacenter that more profitable at this time

Bitcoin mining is technical. Especially industrial level Bitcoin mining, it requires a huge amount of money and entails risks. Those who decide to get into it must be knowledgeable enough.
As to whether they "actually care about Bitcoin's philosophy" or are "mostly just in it to make money", I don't think somebody would decide to start a business in a niche he/she doesn't care about. If there are businessmen who are mining Bitcoin but don't agree with Bitcoin's philosophy, they must be a tiny minority.

You cannot conclude the exact answer towards their intention and what's running on their mind. Its because they provably have different reason on why they join and became a miner. But for sure they have the same purpose which is to secure the network as well as to earn profits to. It make sense to compare both, if you mean on business or profitability side. But there are really different matters between execution or how those people involve in this industry.

They may not necessarily be the group with the most knowledge about the Bitcoin ecosystem, since their goal in mining is to make a profit (return on investment). Perhaps the average holder has a better understanding of Bitcoin because they patiently work to accumulate Bitcoin on a regular basis by setting aside money to buy it, as they recognize the benefits of holding Bitcoin for the long term.
