I Made a Free Web Game to Learn Bitcoin by Playing (Beta, Looking for Feedback)

Most people learn about Bitcoin by reading articles, books, or watching long videos. I wondered if it could be learned in a different way: by actually playing a game.

So I decided to build it myself.

The result is a free browser game where you learn Bitcoin through an interactive story and mini-games instead of simply reading theory.

The game is still in beta and currently includes:

A world-based progression system.
Interactive lessons about what Bitcoin is, why it was created, who Satoshi Nakamoto is, and what a satoshi is.
Mini-games that teach concepts through gameplay instead of traditional quizzes.
A glossary that tracks your learning progress.
XP, collectibles, achievements, and unlockable items.
Local save system (no account required).

The game does not require connecting a wallet, does not ask for private keys, and never handles real funds. Everything runs locally in your browser.

I'm developing this project on my own, so I'm sure there are things I haven't noticed yet.

If you decide to try it, I'd really appreciate your honest feedback, especially about:

Was anything confusing?
Did you get bored at any point?
Did you learn something new?
Which part did you enjoy the most?
What would you improve?

I originally shared this project in the Spanish section of the forum. The feedback I received was incredibly helpful, and several members encouraged me to translate it and post it here as well. So I'd love to hear what this community thinks too.

I tried to test it for a little bit, then I ended up completing the first two chapters. It felt immersive and was very educational, as it does a great job at introducing the basic concepts of Bitcoin. I think it's definitely a fun and interesting way for beginners to learn.

Which part did you enjoy the most?

Completing the dictionary, collecting all of the awards, and finding all the secrets (way easier to notice in mobile).

What would you improve?

Additional links for further reading. In the backpack items for example, "The Document" could redirect to the actual Bitcoin whitepaper. And then for the dictionary, it would be nice if you can still review a concept even after you've mastered it.

Considering that users still have to read, after a while, it became somewhat boring for me ^{[other users might have a different opinion on this one]}, but I think you can easily improve it by using a text-to-speech tool in the explanation & storytelling parts ^{[there are a lot of free ones that don't sound robotic]} and to top it off, a relaxing background sound would be nice as well.

TypoTonic, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed completing the dictionary, collecting the awards, and finding the secrets. I really like your idea about adding links for further reading. I think connecting items like "The Document" directly to the Bitcoin whitepaper would be a great addition. I'll also look into making mastered dictionary concepts available for review again.

SFR10, that's a very good point. Even though the game includes mini-games, there is still quite a bit of reading, and I understand how that can become tiring after a while. Adding text-to-speech and relaxing background audio could make the storytelling sections more engaging. I'll definitely consider this for a future update.

Your feedback is really valuable to me. I'm building this project on my own, so getting different perspectives from people who are actually playing it helps me see things I might otherwise miss.

Great idea for a game! I tried it out for a little bit.

And have a suggestion that you could perhaps think about whether or not it would improve your game:

Your game seems to be a "learn on the fly then repeat the answer"-kind of game. Why not first have the player learn about Bitcoin in a separate documentation which is not a game but more of a "study book". When the player has studied it enough, they can play the game and in the end there would be a high-score table with "players who knew the most". Everyone would want to get to the top.

To make it harder to cheat with AI answers, maybe include a fixed time to read and answer the question as well as a bot check before users can enter the website.

If you add like 100 questions, ranging from low level knowledge to high level expert knowledge, I am sure people would have fun, competing with each other just to see their name on the "players who knew the most" table.

Yup, the domain name could have been more simpler, but I would not call this actually a game, it's sort of an interactive tutorial to learn about Bitcoin, why it was necessary to have Bitcoin, and how it differentiates from other assets like gold, etc. Give you easy understanding of different forms of money and its advantage and disadvantages.

I have finished just the first level. Will it save my progress, or do I have to start all over again, as I do not see any login, etc which can save my progress?

I was confused on level 3. I had to repeat the process but still finished. It's a fun way to learn how Bitcoin started and works; it's a good recommendation for newbies, but for me, as an old believer in Bitcoin, it's a refresher course. We need more educational games like this; there are a lot of educational videos on YouTube, but a platform where you need to pick the right answer is entertaining and educational.

@bulleteyedk Thank you very much! I'm really glad you found the game useful enough to bookmark and recommend. That honestly means a lot to me. I hope it can also be useful to other people who are starting to learn about Bitcoin.

@goldkingcoiner I really like your idea of having a separate challenge mode with a larger pool of questions, especially as an optional way for more experienced users to test their knowledge and compete with others. My main goal right now is to make the learning itself part of the gameplay, rather than separating the study material from the game, but I think your idea could work very well as an additional mode in the future. The leaderboard idea is also interesting, although I would probably consider that later as the educational content grows.

@robelneo I completely agree about the domain name. The current Vercel address isn't very easy to remember or share with someone in person. I originally used it because it was the easiest way to deploy the beta. I'm currently unemployed and don't have much budget for the project, so for now I'm using the free Vercel domain. If everything continues to go well and I'm able to invest more into the project, getting a simple custom domain will definitely be one of my priorities.

@noormcs5 I really like your description of the project as an "interactive tutorial." I usually call it an educational game because it also has story, exploration, mini-games, progression, collectibles, and achievements, but I think "interactive educational game" might actually be the best way to describe it.

Regarding your question about progress: yes, the game saves your progress automatically using the browser's local storage, so no account or login is required. Your progress is currently stored locally on the same browser and device. I realize now that I haven't made this clear enough to the player, so I'll look into making the save system more visible.

The project is still in beta, and if everything continues to go well and I can eventually invest more into it, I'd like to add a proper backend and account system so players can access their progress across different devices.

@fibonacciopstan That's an interesting point about keeping a history of changes to the educational content. I hadn't really considered that before, but I can see the value in documenting important corrections and updates. I think a changelog for major educational updates could be a good solution without making the game itself more complicated. I'll definitely keep that idea in mind as the project grows.

That's exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for, because I want to identify the parts where the instructions or objectives might not be clear enough.

I'll take another look at that level and see if I can make the process easier to understand without making it too simple. As the person who built the game, it's easy for me to overlook things that might be confusing to a new player, so feedback like this is really helpful.

This is fantastic!  I love seeing the non-traditional way of thinking about Bitcoin education instead of just handing beginners a giant reading list or 2 hour video essays.  It is no easy task putting something together like this yourself but you have a great structure here already.  I havent gone through the whole game yet, but I definitely like what I have seen so far.  Nicely done.

FYI I know you mentioned it is just beta but i echo those that also said you should put this onto a slick new domain!
